Property Improvement:
As planned, the rental house to the west of our facili‐ty was demolished the last week of June. Some of our residents took great interest in the project and watched from a safe distance. The “Claw,” the heavy equipment that was used, was amazingly effec ve at bringing down the house and separa ng the different kinds of debris.
Future plans for the property are being discussed, but already the open space is nice.

Rachle was born in Illinois and had one older broth‐er. Her father worked for the railroad and her moth‐er was a homemaker. Though born in Illinois, she was raised in South Dakota through high school and two years at the University of South Dakota. Her in‐terest was in the general fine arts and computers. At age 21, she moved to the State of Washington and enjoyed about nine months living on the San Juan Islands for its beauty and res ulness. She says, “Even the weeds bloomed!” Her mother’s illness sum‐moned her to move to Florida to care for her un l her death. She then returned to Oregon at the invita‐on of a close friend who won over other friends
who were pulling her towards Miami and Pennsylva‐nia. Rachle told her Oregon friend, “Get me a job, and I will come.” Her friend did, and Rachle came!!! One of Rachle’s favorite hobbies is cooking and she started concoc ng things in the kitchen at an early age (around 8). Her mother did not enjoy cooking but her grandmother did. She was a Swedish woman who was a wonderful cook. Rachle really wanted an Easy Bake Oven as a child and her mother managed to find a second‐hand one which she got for Rachle. A er baking a chocolate cake which took forever to bake in this small oven, her mother let her use the
“big oven” from then on. When asked why she is such a good cook, she said it is because she likes food and likes being crea ve with it. She has not been to culinary school but has become accomplished in the kitchen through her own pas‐sion for the cra . She loves bread making and her favorite is a specialty braided bread called Challah. She also makes a mean French Toast and Bread Pud‐ding. Outside of cooking, her second passion is karaoke (singing popular music to accompaniment tracks). She also likes to do cra s and anything ar s c and crea ve. JoAnn’s Fabrics is a favorite store. She has made Heritage Dolls from her grandmother’s linens and would love to get back into making these dolls some day. At Hearthstone, she is proving to be a valuable addi‐on to our cooking team. She is enthusias c about
what she does and says she just loves it here. She is o en seen mingling with the residents as they finish their meals, seeking to get to know them be er and just enjoy them and hear their stories.

JULY HIGHLIGHTS
GARAGE SALE UPDATE The day of the yard sale started as any good sale would, with donuts and coffee! Though it rained the night before, the day of the sale was dry! Dona ons arrived on Thursday and were sorted and priced by staff and residents. Friday, the day of the sale, provided opportuni es for staff and residents to work together managing the sale and le overs were taken to the Goodwill at the close of day. Special thanks to Leo Welch, Dean Carl‐strom, Jack Smithson, and Donna S mson for their help. A few residents were frequent shop‐pers which also helped the cause. Over $500 was raised for the family of one of our own employees going through a difficult me. Benefits? We enjoyed working together, we cleaned out storage areas, got rid of excess, and were able to show our love for a fellow employee and her family in a tangible way.

The Dangers of Dehydra on
Now that June has passed, temperatures are about to soar and that could mean a greater risk of dehydra on. Early signs of dehydra on might be hav‐ing a dry mouth or headache. Other symptoms could be:* Lightheadedness * Nausea & vomi ng * Weakness * Fa gue Dangerous and more serious signs of dehydra on may include confusion, muscle cramping, heart palpita ons, unable to sweat or produce tears, and urine output may drop. It is important to stay hydrated to stay healthy and it doesn’t have to be by drinking fluids. Many salads and fruits have a high water content. Let’s watch out for each other and remind our neighbors and tablemates to have a bit more liquids this summer.
