July 10 & July 17, 2016 Bulletin
From the Pastor’s Desk
Questions About Renovation
1. Where is parking for seniors while we are in the gym?
* We are keeping the parking lot by the office building for seniors and handicapped. There is a
handicap ramp there.
2. I thought we were in a debt elimination campaign. Why are we adding to our debt?
* The money used for this renovation has already been raised for this purpose - no additional
debt.
3. What will be different when we re-enter the church at the end of August?
* The carpet in the center aisle is being replaced with stained concrete. The wood altar platform
will be replaced with stained concrete and it will meet building codes for the size of steps.
* A new wall behind the altar is being constructed and a handicap ramp to the altar will go behind
the wall allowing safer access to the altar area.
* The corpus of Jesus will be repainted and hang on a new cross.
* There will be some improvement in lighting and sound with new speakers and some new light-
ing.
* There will be a stone slab on the altar table. There will be a relic of a saint in or near the altar.
The saint is yet to be determined.
More details to come as the summer goes on. I am looking forward to our summer experience in the gym.
In my previous parish, we worshipped in a public school cafeteria for five years. We can do this for a few
months.

Faith Formation
Summer Activities For Catholic Families!
Summer is a fun time to share activities as a family and to get away from some of our busy routines. It
can also be a time to enrich our faith through some fun activities and here are a few suggestions taken
from Catholic Family Fun:
Did you know that visiting our wonderful two zoos, the Woodland Park Zoo and Point Defiance Zoo
and Aquarium, can be a wonderful way to get your children excited about the many animals mentioned in our Bible and it
can be fun to see how many of the animals in the Bible are at the zoo! It is also a fun place just to talk about creation and
the importance of preserving our planet through many activities as a family - such as recycling and re-using items in differ-
ent ways. Pope Francis encourages all of us to a deeper commitment to our home planet earth, as global warming is a ma-
jor threat mainly caused by human activity.
Plant a Mary garden together. It is always fun to plant and tend to a garden, and to honor our Blessed Mother. If you have
a Mary statue, you can build your garden around your statue, making Mary the heart of your garden. As a family, you can
talk about choosing flowers that are associated to our Blessed Mother, in art, plant a blue and white garden, or plant a rose
bush. This can be a special place for family members to come and pray, and when you pick your flowers, they can be
placed in your prayer space at home and maybe say the rosary together.
A nature walk or hike can be fun depending on the ages of your children. You can read St. Francis of Assisi’s Canticle of the
Sun and then start your walk and collect items together to bring home to make a wreath.
Enjoy the fun and growing in faith as a family.
Cave Quest
Vacation Bible Camp was a huge success, thanks to the many volunteers and parishioners who participated! 80 children experi-
enced the power of Jesus’ light in the midst of dark and confusing times, made new friends, and sang and danced all week long!
You can see photos and watch the Spotlight Videos from each day’s events on our parish website. You can also get a preview
of next year’s program, “Maker Fun Factory”, from June 25-30, 2017!

St. Vincent de Paul
Frederic Ozanam’s words moved all of them when he said, “We
must … do what our Lord Jesus Christ did when preaching the Gos-
pel. Let us go to the poor!” It was 1833, his birthday, and they
were discussing the Church. It seems that every few years, God
raises up a prophet, a saint, to alert us to the needs of the poor
who need our help. It was Frederic Ozanam in 1833, Pope Francis
in 2016. So we are going to the poor. Come if you can. Help if
you can. God bless us all!!

Prayer
Gracious God,
You have blessed us with many gifts and talents, claimed us by the
waters of baptism, and challenged us to ministry in your name.
Allow us to begin each new day aware of the demands of our bap-
tism, to see in ourselves what you see, and to gain the wisdom
necessary to know how best to use our talents to build your
Kingdom in our day.
We ask this through Christ our lord. Amen.
Prayers And Squares Quilt Ministry Needs Your Help!
Do you sew and have some time to devote to this wonderful min-istry? If so, your talents and skills will be greatly appreciated. The growing need in our community for prayer quilts has been tre-mendous. Our Prayers and Squares Ministry is small and has a dedicated group of quilters. It does not matter if you have never made a quilt before as there will be lots of ways that you can use your abilities. This group meets on the first Tuesday of each month from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Pastoral Center. If you are interested, please contact Marion Kari at 206-935-0358, Ext. 113 or by email at [email protected].

Summer Reflections
Over the summer, reflections from some of our great spiritual writers will be highlighted, giving us all hope and strength in our faith to help combat the challenges of daily life. Henri J. M. Nouwen has authored many books on spiritual life and this reflec-tion is taken from his book entitled “The Inner Voice of Love”.
Come Home
There are two realities to which you must cling. First, God has promised that you will receive the love you have been searching for. And second, God is faithful to that promise.
So stop wandering around. Instead, come home and trust that God will bring you what you need. Your whole life you have been running about, seeking the love you desire. Now it is time to end that search. Trust that God will give you that all-fulfilling love and will give it in a human way. Before you die, God will offer you the deepest satisfaction you can desire. Just stop running and start trusting and receiving.
Home is where you are truly safe. It is where you can receive what you desire. You need human hands to hold you there so you don’t run away again. But when you come home and stay home, you will find the love that will bring rest to your heart.

joy nature? We are looking for volunteers to help maintain the

Warriors Healing Retreat
Are you someone who has experienced Post-Traumatic Stress or Moral Injury from your service in the armed forces? These wounds go deeper than psychological and can only be truly healed by the sacred touch of Jesus Christ. The Warriors Healing Retreat will address these wounds and offer such healing on Sat-urday, July 16th from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at American Lake VA Hospital. Thank You To Everyone Who Helped Move To The Gym
Under the superb leadership of Nancy and Dick Holmes working with the Liturgy Commission AND the work of many, many hands, the move to the church took less than half the time anticipated! Outstanding job - thank you!
LOST DOLLY - And speaking of moving to the gym, someone picked up the wrong dolly on Sunday. (There’s a joke there, but. . .) The one missing is a sturdy, black, iron, two-wheel cart with Dick Holmes’ name taped on it. A similar cart was left in Church with an American flag decal pasted on it. Please contact the office, 206-935-0358.

July Happenings
July 14th - Breakfast at Be’s - 9:30 a.m.
For those who prepaid for the August 3rd cruise, please arrange to attend the July 14th breakfast as we will be going over some of the happenings. You might want to bring a pen.
OLG In The West Seattle Grand Parade
Join other OLG parishioners on Saturday, July 23rd at 11:00 a.m. as we show our parish spirit! We’d like to build on the success we’ve had over the past few years with our perennially top-ranked entry in the Community Division, but we need your help!
Truck Driver: We really, really need another truck for the parade
this year! Please volunteer to drive your rig for us in the parade!
We’ll decorate it on parade day and hook up our sound system to
it for our dancers.
OLG “Precision” Dance Team: This is what puts us over the top!
Get ready for three dance numbers; we’ll do the entirety of the
mile-long route! The bigger the group, the better to represent OLG
and you don’t even need to be a good dancer!
Parade Walkers: We always need volunteers to walk the route,
hand out candy, hold up banners, and wave at the crowd. Please
get involved, it’s lots of fun!
If you’d like to participate, please contact Brian Callanan by email or call 206-937-2855. Got some great ideas on how to make our parade entry even better? Please include that, too! Phone calls will be made in the next few weeks to line up volunteers and get things ready to go! Important dates to put on your calendar:
July 17, noon (after Mass) - Banner Painting and Dance Practice
July 23rd (Parade Day), 9:00 a.m. Truck/Float Preparation - 10:00 a.m. Dance Rehearsal. (Please arrive no later than 10:30 a.m. if you want to be in the parade).
Summer Film Festival - “Suffragette”
Join us on Tuesday, July 12th at 6:30 p.m. in the Pastoral Center - low-
er level. This film is a drama that tracks the story of the foot soldiers of
the early feminist’s movement in early 20th century England. Based on
true events, this film tells the story of women and their lives. Maud
was one such person. The story of her fight for dignity is as gripping
and visceral as any thriller; it is also heart-breaking and inspirational.
Rated PG-13. Bring your favorite movie treat...popcorn and lemonade
provided.
