I have always been fascinated with jewellery. After attending a night class to make myself a bracelet, I decided to take my interest further and study Contemporary Jewellery Design and Fabrication at the Randwick Technical Institute in Sydney, Australia. This training cemented my love for designing and creating jewellery – a passion I have now made my profession.

I constantly fi nd inspiration for my work in everyday life. I translate the thoughts, feelings and ideas I experience into unique jewellery pieces. In a way, the jewellery I craft is a record of a treasured experience of mine. And I love the idea that

the person who wears my jewellery will be creating their own treasured experiences too. I thoroughly enjoy the process of jewellery making from concept to completion and the path that this leads you on as an artist.

I prefer to work in sterling silver and non precious materials to highlight that the beauty and the value of the item is in the memories or emotions invoked by the piece rather than the material from which the item is made.

Every item of my work is a unique piece of hand made New Zealand jewellery - all designed and crafted by me in my workshop. Some pieces are ‘one off’ designs and many are limited edition.

This collection of jewellery is inspired by the many medals and prizes that my father won as a keen member of a gun club and NZ representative in clay target shooting. As young children, my brothers and I spent a lot of time at gun clubs in the Waikato. The boys worked in the traps and of course, being a girl, I was expected to help the ladies set the long lunch table. Some of the ladies were intriguing, dripping with statement jewellery, large hair styles and adorned with stacks of rings crowding their fi ngers. It was always the shining silver medals that Dad won that fascinated me. Over many years my father could be relied upon to provide a ham and other

lavish goodies for the Christmas table with his keen eye for shooting. With this collection of work, I have tried to bring a modern twist on the classic items that were worn in this era. I have kept the chains quite raw in terms of fi nishing and the way they are hammered into shape. My intention is to give the pieces a modern edge. The medals themselves share the classic shapes from the past but I have applied a fresh appeal by way of the brushed pattern effect and higher background polish.

All items of Julie Eynon jewellery are hand made from sterling silver. Silver naturally tarnishes over time. During the fi nal stages of production various patinas and fi nishes are applied to each item. Some pieces are highly polished while others may have a hammered, matt or a brushed effect applied to them.

To clean, simply rub each item over gently with a silver cloth. Silver cloths contain cleaning products that polish and protect from tarnishing. They are available from most supermarkets.

It is recommended that you clean the jewellery after it has been in contact with chlorine, perfume, hairspray, makeup or sweat. Keeping your

jewellery in its packaging whilst not in use will help to reduce tarnishing.

Necklaces and items with a brushed or hammered fi nish can be gently cleaned using a soft toothbrush and small amount of toothpaste prior to using the silver cloth. This is not recommended for highly polished items as the polished fi nish will be scratched.

Silver develops its own patina as it is worn, enduring knocks and scratches along the way. It should be expected that the original patina or fi nish applied to a piece will change over time to refl ect its use.
