History

What is Juliana’s Bike? When the artist Juliana Bellente left Leeds last year she took most of her belongings with her, except her bike. She also left East Street Arts with a challenge, to create a new bike for her, and this has been the inspiration for an eclectic new arts programme in the city, Juliana’s Bike.Contributing to the city’s preparations for 2014’s Tour de France; Juliana’s Bike will programme key events over three years starting this summer 2013. Forming part of Leeds Bike Fest, Juliana’s Bike includes fashion in the 21st century, performance and live art responding to pedal power, and inventions to make life more interesting through bicycles. East Street Arts and partners will explore the potential of cycling through a range of activities including transportation, sport, interaction and other imaginative happenings in the city.

Juliana’s Bike Artist Residencyjulianasbike.org.uk/residency/

During 2013, artist Dave Lynch will explores the potential of pedal power processes though research, design and play. Working with scientists, engineers, designers and makers he investigates how mechanical devices can create playful and meaningful interactions with the world around us and includes pedal-powered time travel, fire-breathing robots, and mind controlled actions. The aim is to create a large-scale installation for the 2014 Tour de France and its development can be followed via his blog. Dave Lynch is an artist, director & inventor working internationally with installation, moving image and projection. Look out over the coming months as further pedal-powered inspired work emerges as part of Juliana’s Bike.
