~ We Gather to Worship ~

L: This is a new day the Lord is making! P: Let us worship God!

~ Luther, Calvin & the Pope Meet ! ~

Gathering Faith Begins by Letting Go Carl Daw (1996) Sung to Dix ~ For the Beauty of the Earth

1. Faith begins by letting go; giving up what had seemed sure; Taking risks and pressing on; though the way feels less secure:

Pilgrimage both right and odd, trusting all our life to God.

Reformation Call to Worship

As we gather together this day to commemorate – to be a living collage of a variety of hues from the same Painter’s palette, we strive to come to this

anniversary in the spirit of the Five Rs of the Reformation …

We come Rejoicing … because of the joy we share; because what we have in common is greater than that which divides; because God is patient;

because we can always learn from each other.

We come Remembering … because all streams of the Reformation contain valid witnesses; because one church’s celebration is another’s painful memory.

We come Reforming … because the Church is always in need of being made new again and again.

We come Repenting … because splintering leads us to formulate judgements, stereotypes, and prejudices about each other; because focusing

upon our differences diverts our attention away from our purpose.

We come Reconciling … because our call to oneness begins with a perspective of unity not division; because our strength lies is what is held in common.

ALL: Because God is our Refuge – we come during this Reformation season to Rejoice, to Remember, to be Reformed, to Repent and to Reconcile on

this day and beyond. Thanks be to God!

All Sing

2. Faith endures by holding on, keeping mem’ry’s roots alive; So that hope may bear its fruit; promise-fed, our souls will thrive,

Not through merit we possess; but by God’s great faithfulness.

The responsibility of the church is to declare to each generation what is the faith. . . . This is always a fresh task in every generation. . . . No verbal statement can be produced which relieves the Church of the responsibility continually to re-think and re-state its message. No appeal to creeds and confessions can alter the fact that the Church has to state in every new generation how it interprets the historic faith, and how it relates it to the new thought and experience of its time. . . . Nothing can remove from the Church the responsibility for stating now what is the faith. It belongs to the essence of a living

church that it should be able and willing to do so. — Lesslie Newbigin, 1948

ALL Sing:

3. Faith matures by reaching out, stretching minds, enlarging hearts, Sharing struggles, living prayer, binding up the broken parts;

Till we find the commonplace; ripe with witness to God’s grace.

~ We Listen for the Voice of God ~

Gospel Lesson John 8:36 Common English Bible

36 Therefore, if the Son makes you free, you really will be free.

L: This is the Gospel of the Lord P: Praise to You, Lord Christ!

Sermon Freedom David W. Key, Sr.

~ We Respond ~

ALL: To You God, I release my fear; I release my pain; I release my uncertainty; I release my shame; I release my busyness and hurry; I release my worry;

I release my defensiveness; I release any feeling that I need to fake something, or put on a show.

I release any sense that I am unworthy, or unloved by you. I release any grudges or unforgiveness I’m holding.

I release to any urge for vengeance or need to prove a point. I release myself from innapropriate expectations put on me by other people.

I release myself from insisting on perfection. I release myself from micromanaging or taking too much responsibility.

I release myself from saying Yes when I should be saying No. I release myself from saying No when I should be saying Yes.

I accept the peace you offer me in your presence. I accept the rest you offer me in sharing the heavy things of my life.

I gratefully accept the freedom you offer me this this very moment, and in each new day.

The Five Solas ~ Reformation Hymn Anderson / Kauflin (2016)

Solo: We will trust God’s Word alone, where a perfect Love is known; Our traditions shift like sand while God’s Truth forever stands.

We will live by faith alone, clothed in merit not our own; We are claimed by Christ alone, and His Living Sacrifice.

Refrain ALL

Solo: We are saved by grace alone — undeserved, yet freely shown; No accomplishment on earth can achieve each day’s new birth.

We will stand on Christ alone, the unyielding Cornerstone; Nations rage and evil roars, still God reigns forevermore! Refrain ALL

The Giving, *Presentation and Blessing of our Gifts

L: We give thanks for all that God has given us. P: May God bless all that we offer: our prayers, our presence, our gifts and our service.

~ We Gather as Community ~

*Passing of the Peace L: The Lord be with you! P: And also with you! Greet one another with signs of peace.

*Song of Fellowship Surely the Presence Lanny Wolfe (1977)

~ A word from Katharina von Bora ~

~ We Gather in Prayer ~ ~ Silent Prayer ~ Sharing Requests ~ ~ Pastoral Prayer ~ Lord’s Prayer

Response Free to be Me, God Kate Wilkins Woolley (1970)

Our Father, who art in heaven; Hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day, our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the Kingdom, And the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
