Politics in 1900’s

• In the summer 1940, there were many territorial disputes that caused Romania to lose most of the territory that was gained during WWI. This caused the popularity of Romania's government to tremendously lesson.

• The fall of Romania’s government, caused a dictatorship under Conducator Lon Antonescu to rise.

• This new ruler led the country to joining forces with the Axis Powers.

Romanian Economy• During this time, Romania's economy was in

ruins from the expenses of the war• Inflation came to a record high• Although they stuck to their Jewish bearings,

Jews we’re allowed to openly participate until they were shipped out.

• Many women worked in factories producing many goods.

Romania Religion

• The major religion was Christian Orthodox• There was also Greek Christian Orthodox

and Jewish religions at the time. • The Jews, for the most part, were allowed

to worship freely

Romanian Housing

A typical Romanian house

Although some people lived in apartments, most lived in houses.

In most cases only one Jewish family lived in each dwelling.

Jewish families did live by each other but they also had many Hungarian and Saxon neighbors

Books• Sandor Beniczky- Wrote many romantic novels &

articles during this time period• Parents tried to guide their children into reading

educational books. • Like Juci, many went behind their parents backs

and read the romantic novels anyways.

Romania Education

• There were separate schools for Jewish children• They had Protestant and Romanian schools also• Many, like Juci, were accepted into a French

institute• At each school, they learned a different

language like French, German, and Hebrew• Some moved on from high school to go to a

Romanian University

Life In Romania During the 1900’s

• Separate schools for Jewish children• There were big balls that the community would

attend• Everyone listened to their radio whenever they

could• Many people took dance lessons to prepare for

balls and banquets• There were Jewish clubs where people would go to

play cards and chat• Many Jewish people enjoyed the movies played at

the Jewish cinema • Adults went to the café regularly to enjoy coffee

and ice cream
