Follow this portrait of a man touched by injustice as a child, who then dedicatd his life to fighting discrimi-nation and inequity as a lawyer, judge and teacher. This compelling biography, told through a combination of archival footage and interviews, charts Cruz Reynoso's humble origins, his appointment to the California Supreme Court (the first Latino justice to serve in the state's highest court) and more recently his leadership on the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.

Cruz Reynoso: Sowing the Seeds of Justice

Sunday, July 1 at 8:00 pm

Reflect on the last 50 years in African-American art by exploring the influences, inspirations and experiences of black artists. Beginning at the height of the Civil Rights Era and leading up to the present, it provides a truthful, unflinching look at often-ignored artists and their progeny. Impressionistic video collages showcase the wide variety, both thematically and stylistically, of contemporary pieces of black artists working in the genres of illustration, abstraction and surrealism, among others.

Follow the story of struggle and the ultimate triumph of the brave African-American soldiers who served their country during WWII. The "Tuskegee Airmen" program, a controversial military initiative designed to measure African-Americans' competence for flying the engines of war, features the stories of the more than 40 aviators from western Pennsylvania during the war, as well as those who kept the planes in the air.

Celebrate the human-animal bond with positive, uplifting stories about shelter pets and their new homes. Every year, more than 4 million dogs and cats are eutha-nized in America's shelters. Discover the success stories that bring more people into the shelters to give these incredible animals a second chance, and how shelter pets are helping our returning War Veterans cope with debili-tating injuriesand are teaching inmates new life lessons. Follow a shelter pet being rescued from the streets and his journey through the shelters to his new home.

A recreation of the final flight of Amelia Earhart, the noted aviation pioneer whose historic 1937 trip around the world ended in her tragic disappearance. Based on "World Flight 1937," Texas aviator Linda Finch's honorary recreation of Earhart's planned flight. With rare accredi-tation from the Smithisonian Institution, this informative program uses archival footage and interviews with Earhart and theories as to what actually occurred during that deadly flight.

Patrick Henry's impassioned plea at the second Virginia Convention of 1775, "Give me liberty or give me death," defined the American Revolution. See this seminal moment in American history with experts' commentary on the events preceding the second Virginia Convention and dramatic re-enactments of the historic moments that followed. Historians also explain the lasting signifi-cance of the convention and Henry's stirring speech.

7/31 Luciana Souza Trio

Brash vocals earned Sarah Vaughan the titles Sassy and The Divine One. Pianist Eric Reeds leads a celebration of her work through the glorious range of Jane Monheit and Mary Stallings' sure swing.

Brazilian vocalist Luciana Souza has made a home in both the bossa nova and jazz traditions – and even within the works of ee cummings and Pablo Neruda. Her acrobatic inflections are punctuated by percussionist Cyro Baptista and guitarist Romero Lubambo

Etta Jones sang with clarity and precision reminiscent of Carmen McRae, but with the edge of Dinah Washington or Billie Holiday. She liked ballads and loved an accompanying saxophone, as evidenced by her long association with Houston Person.

The son of boogie-woogie pianist Albert Ammons, Gene Ammons came roaring out of the bluesy sound of Chicago at a time when bebop was just getting its legs. Sitting in the horn section of Billy Eckstine's band in the mid-'40s, Ammons shared the stage with Charlie Parker, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Stitt, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, and Art Blakey. Although Ammons had a big, bold tenor sound, he could also compress that energy into lush, romantic ballads.

JazzSet's Dee Dee Bridgewater was a judge when Parlato won the 2004 Thelonious Monk Vocal Competition. After touring Europe this July, Gretchen (pictured) returns to Newport in August. Trombonist Conrad Herwig teaches at Rutgers University, plays with the Mingus Big Band and salsa great Eddie Palmieri, and leads this Latin Side All-Star Band.

With three Grammys to her credit, Lari White's (pictured) multi-faceted career as an award-winning recording artist, hit songwriter, producer, independent record label owner, and versatile actress has earned her the title of Nashville's "Renaissance Woman." As the first female producer of a male superstar, Lari recently made music history by producing Toby Keith's platinum album White Trash with Money. This "Renaissance Woman" joins host Feinstein to share her musical journey on this edition of Song Travels.

Piano Jazz presents a very special programfeaturing one of the most imaginative and original performers of our time, the incomparable pianist Keith Jarrett (pictured.) Jarrett'splaying is a combination of unbelievable beauty, technical genius and mesmerizing improvisation. As ellusive as he is brilliant, Jarrett has been on McPartland's guest wish list for years. Jarrett and McPartland perform a mostly improvised set before closing on Herbie Hancock's "Indian Summer."

The Azerbaijani pianist Amina Figarova (pictured) from the Netherlands has a new CD and just toured the US from New Orleans to New York, Missoula, Pittsburgh and more. Following Figarova at Newport, trumpeter Avishai Cohen from Tel Aviv leads a trio he calls "airy" with sister Anat as a guest on clarinet.

May 5th, 2012 marked the 30th anniversary of the passing of Cal Tjader, the tremendously influential Latin jazz vibraphonist, drummer and bandleader from the San Francisco Bay Area. In the 1950s and 1960s, Cal was one of the Bay Area's most important musical exports, showcasing a small combo sound blending a fusion of west coast cool jazz and the driving Afro-Cuban beats of the east. The story of how Tjader went from jazz drummer to Latin jazz vibes icon is that of an open minded individual whose musical passion led him to buck the status quo of the period.Cal embraced Latin music at a time when the people in the United States were legally segregated and many whites believed blacks, Latinos and other ethnic minorities were inferior. In his hometown of San Mateo in the 1940s, signs were placed at the train station stating, “No Darkies Allowed”. Using the rhythms from the Caribbean, Cal helped break down those social barriers and brought people of all colors and creeds together to hear his music and dance. As a result, his audiences reached a better understanding of what it meant to be an American. Yet he always made the point: “I am not an innovator or path finder, I am a participator.”On Saturday July 7th at 7PM, join me for “Cal Tjader and the Rise of West Coast Latin Jazz”. I’ll be talking with Latin jazz icon and Tjader protégé, Poncho Sanchez, as part of the Stanford Jazz Festival at Dinkelspeil Auditorium on the Stanford University campus. For more details, visit www.stanfordjazz.org.
