WELL“TA‘ DOUGLA“ VOLUNTEE‘ “U‘PA““E“ TWO MILE“TONE“

Volunteering at WellStar Douglas Hospital is something that makes each of us who do so feel like we are giving back to the community and serving others.

As we begin to put this virus behind us, the need for more people to consider Volunteering and experience the feeling of helping your neighbors and fellow citizens will be greater than ever. Working diligently in various areas of our hospital, our Volunteers are extra hands and hearts providing service to patients, their families, hospital staff and the community. All that is request-ed of you is to donate 4 hours one day a week.

Volunteering has been an extraordinary commitment for one incredibly special lady, Marilynn Coats, who turned "90" on April 4th. She has given of her time and talent as a Volunteer for 40+ years and almost 15,000 hours.

Shortly after the Gift Shop was first started in 1975 at Douglas General Hospital, now known as WellStar Douglas, Marilynn joined the Volunteer group. Soon after joining, Marilynn noticed there were no fresh flowers to sell so she began making artificial floral arrangements at her home and brought them to the hospital to sell.

Eventually, Marilynn served as Gift Shop Manager, which was renamed in her honor in 2015, as Marilynn’s Place. Today, Marilynn is the assistant Gift Shop Manager. She is usually in the Gift Shop, several days a week restocking and rearranging displays.

Over the years she has battled through some health challenges including cancer and chemo-therapy on two occasions. After her husband, Jack (a builder in Douglas Co.) passed away several years ago, Marilynn has remarked many times she was glad she had her Volunteer job at the hospital , as it helped her to get through those challenging times in her life.

Those of us who know her remark at her calm, gentle, gracious spirit. She is such a sweet per-son and has developed many special friendships through her many hours volunteering in the Gift Shop.
