A Message from the Director of Athletics

I am very thankful that you have chosen to participate in intercollegiate athletics at Judson University.

Whether you are participating as a freshman, or are entering your senior season, I am grateful to have

you as as part of our athletic program.

Our staff is committed to providing you with an excellent, positive experience as a student-

athlete. We will provide the necessary tools for you to be successful at Judson, both in the

classroom and in your sport of competition. Also, we want athletics to be a means of spiritual

growth for you. Winning a lot of games is not our sole mission. We want to see you grow in

your Christian faith and mature in character.

Our staff will do everything possible to make our department successful, but it is important that

each of you also recognize that you need to share this responsibility with us. It is a privilege to

compete in college athletics and I hope you honor this opportunity. I hope that you will realize

the benefits you will receive by being a part of the Judson Athletic teams. This could be the best

year ever for Judson Athletics if we all work together and succeed in all areas including

academics, athletics and spiritual development.

This handbook contains the policies, procedures and expectations of the Judson athletic

department. Each student-athlete is responsible for the information in this handbook. It is

expected that each student-athlete will review this handbook and be aware of what is to be

anticipated in your experience as a Judson student-athlete. It will be a helpful tool to answer

questions and give you direction in certain situations. I am happy to meet with anyone who has

any further questions about this handbook.

I look forward to watching you pursue your academic and athletic goals this year. Go Eagles!

Judson University Mission Statement

Judson is an evangelical Christian university that represents the Church at work in higher education,

equipping students to be fully developed, responsible persons who glorify God by the quality of their

personal relationships, their work, and their citizenship within the community, the nation and the world.

Through a broadly based education in the liberal arts, sciences and professions, the university enables

its students to acquire ideas and concepts that sharpen their insights, develop skills appropriate to their

career goals, and develop the skills and commitment for lifelong learning. The Judson community

experience challenges graduates to be decisive leaders and active participants in church and society,

articulate proponents of Biblical Christianity, persuasive advocates for the sovereignty of God over all

life, and effective ambassadors for Christ.

Community Standards of Judson University We, at Judson University, do not wish to be conformed to the standards of this world, but pray to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Therefore, for the advancement of the Kingdom of God and well-being of the Judson University community, we pledge ourselves to strive to embody the fruit of the Spirit as listed in Galatians 5:22-23. Love - We will seek for others what we desire for ourselves. Joy - We will cultivate a deep sense of contentment in every situation. Peace - We will exhibit the serenity that comes from our awareness of God’s presence. Patience - We will show tolerance when events or individuals behave contrary to our expectations. Kindness - We will balance clear standards with generosity of spirit. Goodness - We will strive to live morally upright lives in relation to God and others. Gentleness - We will be submissive, teachable and warm in spirit. Faithfulness – We will be trustworthy in our relationship to God and others. Self-control - We will channel our desires and energies into biblically acceptable expressions. We humbly ask God to supply, through His Holy Spirit, the power and the will to attain these goals.

NAIA Champions of Character Judson University is a firm believer in the NAIA’s Champions of Character initiative which emphasizes the five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship. Because of that belief, we ask that each student-athlete, coach and administrator strive be a great representative of the University, their team and themselves.

Respect Those associated with sport show respect by treating themselves, other persons, institutions and their sport according to the highest standards of conduct. It implies civilized and gracious behavior to players, coaches, fans and parents.

Responsibility Athletes show responsibility by making academic progress toward graduation their top priority. They solve problems rather than make excuses, and are reliable team players. Students should be accountable for their actions and decisions, and coaches and administrators should maintain high standards of competence and conduct. Integrity For student competitors and their coaches, integrity means keeping commitments and conducting honest behavior. Coaches must subscribe to and practice the Coaches Code and Code of Ethics, and student-athletes must know and understand the Champions of Character Student-Athlete Pledge. Servant Leadership This core value refers to putting the group first and becoming responsible for personal and group roles while performing at your best. Students demonstrating servant leadership have a primary purpose of serving others while striving to become a personal and team leader. The servant-leader provides a critical service to society and the great gift of good example. Sportsmanship The conduct of educational sports according to the highest standards is our expectation for sportsmanship. Administrators, coaches, students, fans and parents are expected to act correctly even when others do not, and demonstrate fairness and equity in all contests and relationships.

Therefore every effort should be made to demonstrate the highest standard of excellence and godly character. Therefore, relying on God, with the help of my coaches and teammates, I will strive to: 1. Follow all guidelines of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) letter and spirit, and place myself in compliance with the association. 2. Provide student records as well as accurate and complete information concerning all aspects of my playing to the NCCAA and other public forums. 3. Treat coaches, administrators and officials with respect as the authority figures placed over me as I represent my institution and the NCCAA. 4. Treat fellow student-athletes with respect and celebrate their diversity regardless of gender, ethnicity or cultural background. 5. Instill godly character in my teammates by demonstrating high standards of personal honesty and integrity. 6. National Affiliations

National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics is a governing body of athletic programs of nearly 300 colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Its mission is to promote the education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Since 1937, the NAIA has administered programs and championships in proper balance with the overall educational experience. In 2000, the NAIA reaffirmed its purpose to enhance the character-building aspects of sport. Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through five tenets: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship. This program will educate and create awareness of the positive character-building traits afforded by sports and return integrity to competition at the collegiate and youth levels while impacting all of society.

National Christian College Athletic Association National Christian College Athletic Association was incorporated to provide a Christian-based organization that functions uniquely as a national and international agency for the promotion of outreach and ministry, and for the maintenance, enhancement, and promotion of intercollegiate athletic competition with a Christian perspective. The NCCAA game plan is to assist colleges in producing winners in the "game of life". Its intent is to assist the colleges and coaches in producing a game plan that will influence the student-athlete immediately as well as for his/her entire life: a plan that will challenge the student-athlete through district and national competition; a plan that expects academic credibility; a plan of maximum development through assisting college coaches with leadership, programs, and materials; a plan that encourages a mature functioning body of Christians able to serve family, school, church, and society. The NCCAA game plan includes: dedicated and caring leadership, national competition, international outreach and ministry with athletic teams, discipleship programs and materials for student-athletes and coaches, and conferences on current key issues.

Academic Policies and Expectations

Student Success Center The Student Success Center and Career Resource Library are located on the second floor of the Lindner Tower. The Student Success Center provides tutoring and writing assistance as well as career advice to Judson students. Students are encouraged to visit the Student Success Center for all academic and career concerns. To schedule an appointment, call the Student Success Center at ext. 1511, the Career Center at ext. 1510, or stop by anytime. Daytime and evening hours are available.

Class Attendance Policy 1. The athlete must recognize that the University policy, as stated in the catalog, mandates

that the individual professor may determine his/her class attendance policy. However, a student is entitled to miss any class, in one semester, the total number of hours that the class meets in a week. Therefore if a three-hour class meets three times weekly, a student may miss that class three times in the semester. If the class meets once a week, the student is entitled to miss that class one time. The faculty policies beyond this minimum are at the discretion of the professor and should be stated in the course syllabus or at the beginning of each semester. Make sure that you understand each professor’s attendance policy.

2. Athletes who are involved in athletic events that will require them to miss class should correlate their course syllabus against the game schedule and notify the professor in advance (preferably at the beginning of the semester) as to their absence.

3. Athletes should not take cuts in class if they know that they will be missing classes for athletic events. Your athletic absences are, in fact, class cuts. You may not be excused beyond those.

4. If there is assigned work due on the day when an athlete will miss class because of an athletic event, the athlete should get that work to the professor prior to the time that the class meets. A professor is not under any obligation to accept late work.

5. If an exam is scheduled during the time that the athlete will miss class due to an athletic event, the athlete must notify their professor and their coach to see if fair arrangements can be made.

6. No athlete will be allowed to miss a scheduled class in order to participate in a practice or scrimmage game.

7. When an athletic event conflicts with a class that meets once a week, it is the athlete’s responsibility to arrange to have the class video or audio taped. Policy only allows a student one (three hour) absence from this class

8. When a regular season athletic event conflicts with a special class event, such as a field trip, included in the syllabus, the class requirements have priority.

a) No varsity athlete may participate or travel with the team to more than two weekday away play dates per week, with the exclusion of vacation and post-season games.

Page 15: Judson University Student-Athlete Handbook€¦ · Judson University Student-Athlete Handbook Table of Contents Section I Introduction and Mission ... Head Cross Country Coach Tim

14

b) An athletic absence is defined as a school approved intercollegiate athletic event. Students will not be allowed to miss a scheduled class in order to participate in a practice or scrimmage game.

c) The academics-athletics liaison will distribute a class absence list to all professors and the Academic Dean’s office one week prior, or as soon as possible, for missing classes due to post-season play.

d) All absences due to athletic participation count against absences allowable under general University policy.

e) The academics-athletics liaison will submit a copy of the schedule, including departure times, to all faculty at the beginning of the season.

f) When an athletic event conflicts with a class that meets once a week, it is the student’s responsibility to arrange to have the class video or audio taped.

g) When an athletic event conflicts with a special class event, such as a field trip included in the syllabus, the student must confer with the faculty member about the possibility of an alternate assignment.

h) Students are required to turn in all assignments due prior to the athletic class absence.

i) If an exam is scheduled during the time that the student will miss class due to participation in an athletic event, students must notify their professor and their coach to see if fair arrangements can be made.

j) When athletic absences exceed the absences allowable under the University guidelines, students will make prior arrangements with the faculty member to make up work missed, and will not be penalized for these additional athletic absences.

Judson University Code of Conduct The Christian ethic demands a willingness to recognize and accept persons in their individuality; it also affirms the social dimension of our existence. A socially responsible community, therefore, must determine the structure within which individual freedom may flourish but not become so self-centered that the resulting environment finally destroys the very freedom it was intended to support. Judson University believes that the Christian ethic is best served in an atmosphere of personal self-discipline, guided by the principle of concern for others, and reinforced by a structure which represents appropriate limitations. The student acknowledges the existence of such limitations and accepts responsibility for the consequences of his or her actions whenever they go beyond the necessary limitations. In some cases, this will mean a judicial hearing on specific charges. It is also understood, however, that a student whose behavior clearly indicates an incompatibility with the philosophy of this institution may be counseled to leave this community for another more suited to his or her needs. Students are citizens of many communities besides Judson University (city, county, state and nation.) Certain types of misconduct may be subject to concurrent jurisdiction of, and the imposition of a sanction by both the University and civil authorities. It is the right and duty of the University as an institution with a past and a future, as well as a present, to enunciate those continuing expectations for its students, which it has derived from its philosophy. Community Lifestyle Expectations Judson University is a Christian educational community, and communities function best when their members understand and abide by established standards of lifestyle and conduct followed not by force of others but out of each individual’s willingness to take personal responsibility for the well being of this community. Judson University adheres to certain biblical principles as men and women in pursuit of both academic excellence and Christian ideals and values, and our personal conduct should reflect this pursuit (2 Tim. 2:15; Col. 3:12-17). Judson University has the responsibility of maintaining an environment conducive to learning and Christ-centered community living, and, therefore, reserves the right to discipline any student whose behavior is inimical to its purpose and standards.

16

Conduct Guidelines The Student Development Office asks students, as members of the Judson community, to take personal responsibility for the following areas:

1. The spirit of honesty, integrity, and fair play-respecting the rights of others-is expected. 2. Any form of sexual immorality-including but not limited to pre-marital sex, cohabitation, homosexual behavior, and the use of pornography-is prohibited. 3. The use of hallucinogenic drugs and substances (including marijuana) or narcotics not authorized by a physician is forbidden. Under no circumstances is the use, possession, or distribution of the above allowed on or away from campus. 4. The use of tobacco products is prohibited on campus, in campus-approved housing or at University-related activities. Tobacco products may not be stored in Judson Housing facilities. 5. The use of alcoholic beverages and/or simulated alcoholic beverages is not allowed on campus, in campus-approved housing, in privately owned vehicles located on campus, or at University-related activities.

6. Profanity and obscene behavior will not be accepted. 7. Compliance with local, state, and federal laws is required.

8. Assaulting, harassing, or endangering in any manner the health and safety of any person is prohibited. 9. Compliance with regulations in the Student Handbook and with the directions of University personnel is expected.

Alcohol and Drug Policy

The Judson University Athletic Department recognizes the need to provide student-athletes with the opportunity to develop responsible behaviors that lead to healthy lifestyle choices. Substance abuse is one of the most important issues facing athletics and society today. The use of illegal drugs, misuse of legal drugs and dietary supplements, use of performance-enhancing substances, and the use of alcohol and tobacco are inconsistent with the standards expected of student-athletes at Judson University. The Judson athletic department believes it is our responsibility to do everything possible to protect the health and wellbeing of our student-athletes. Therefore, when violations of the university’s drug and alcohol policies occur, the following sanctions can result.

Grievance Procedures

In the midst of daily practices, travel and competition, disagreements may arise between student-athletes and coaches. Our desire is that all issues be handled in a mature fashion, following the proper chain of command, and with as much privacy as possible for those involved. Therefore, the following procedures must be followed when trying to resolve conflicts, disagreements and other issues. 1. In virtually all circumstances*, the first step is for the student-athlete to meet with the

head coach to express thoughts and explain any issues or complaints. This needs to be done face-to-face, not through an e-mail or other form of communication. We believe strongly that if both the student-athlete and the coach have an open line of communication and are able to freely express their thoughts and opinions that the majority of all issues will be taken care of through this first step. Constantly complaining to others about the situation without taking the initiative to talk to the coach will serve to make it more difficult to resolve the issue.

(*While highly unlikely, any cases of alleged physical or mental abuse should be reported directly to the athletics director.)

2. Parents should not get involved until the student-athlete has had an initial meeting with

the coach. If parents choose to get involved, they should first contact the coach and discuss the situation.

3. At NO time will a coach or the athletics director discuss issues pertaining to playing time or game strategy with parents. Those issues are between the coach and the players.

4. If player/coach and parent/coach meetings have been held and the issue is not resolved, the next step is to meet with the athletics director. The athletics director will meet with each party separately and then together, if applicable. At the conclusion of those meetings, the athletics director will communicate an opinion and/or a decision about the situation to all parties involved both verbally and in writing.

5. Further complaints or issues should be directed to the Provost.

Athletic Training and Insurance

Athletic training policies are set by the department under the coordination of the Head Athletic Trainer.

1. General Guidelines

a. An NATA certified and Illinois licensed athletic trainer is on campus during

any home games or normal athletic practice times. b. Concerns by coaches related to athletic trainer services are directed to

the head athletic trainer. c. To insure adequate coverage, 24 hour notification of athletic events must

be made with the athletic training staff prior to that event.

d. The Head Athletic Trainer makes decisions on athletes; needs for taping, bracing, course of treatment, rehabilitation or doctor’s referral and/or second opinions.

e. All athletes are required to provide proof of a physical examination

before they are allowed to participate in practice or intercollegiate games. All entering freshmen and transfer students should have a physical on file as part of the application process. It is the coach’s responsibility to make sure all athletes in their sport have current physicals, collect the physical forms and turn the forms into the Head Athletic Trainer.

Insurance

Athletic insurance coverage for student athletes is for injuries sustained by Judson athletes while participating in intercollegiate sports programs. Although diligent effort is made by the Athletic Department to minimize the risk of athletic injuries, there is always a possibility of injury through participation in sports activities.

Please be advised that Judson University requires that all student-athletes have primary insurance coverage to avoid significant out-of-pocket expenses in the event of an injury as a condition to participate in intercollegiate athletics. This policy may be purchased through the Judson University student health insurance or be a part of an existing parental policy.

If covered under an existing parental policy, you must check with your insurance provider to verify that there are no exclusions in your policy regarding athletic-related injuries. Do not drop dependent coverage while your son or daughter is participating in intercollegiate athletics. Most employers’ group insurance policies allow dependent coverage to be continued to age 26. For those student-athletes covered by an HMO, with a primary care physician (PCP) assigned, it may be necessary to switch to a PCP in the metropolitan Chicago area.

Failure to maintain acceptable insurance coverage throughout the entire academic year will result in the student-athlete being responsible for any/all charges incurred. Any changes in insurance and/or coverage must be reported to the University Health Center and Athletic training staff immediately. Any injuries occurring during any lapse of coverage will be the financial responsibility of the student-athlete.

The insurance provided by the Athletic Department is SECONDARY. Insurance coverage for student-athletes is summarized below:

The Judson University Athletic Department does not pay medical bills on behalf of student-athletes. Medical bills mailed directly to the student-athlete from a health care provider must not be ignored.

The Judson University accidental medical policy is always secondary to the student’s primary insurance. This policy provides secondary accidental medical coverage for athletically related injuries only. Athletically related injuries are those that occur during a University sanctioned intercollegiate athletic activity and under the direct supervision of a member of the Judson coaching staff.

3. Injuries

a. The University provides an athletic trainer and a school heath center staffed by a campus nurse. If the athletic trainer or nurse is not available at the time of the injury and emergency medical help is required, the coach should call Campus Safety immediately at 847.622.9999 and they will dial 911 and direct the emergency response team where to go on campus. A coach should not assume he or she is qualified to either diagnose an injury or prescribe corrective measures. The student must then fill out an athletic insurance claim form and it must be signed by the coach. These forms are available at the health center.

b. All injury records are necessary for insurance purposes and should be kept in the

athletic trainer’s files.

c. The Head Athletic Trainer determines the playing status of an injured athlete. The coach should not permit injured athletes to return to participation until they are cleared by the proper authorities.

Athletics Scholarship Information

A large percentage of student-athletes at Judson receive some amount of scholarship that is based on their participation in one or more sports. Athletic scholarships are awarded on an annual basis unless special arrangements have been made in writing between the student-athlete and the coach. Any such special arrangements must be approved by the Athletic Director and recorded on file. Head coaches have the ability to determine the amount of athletics scholarship that an incoming student will receive, within limits set by the University. The amount of athletics scholarship offered to a particular student-athlete can vary greatly, depending on a variety of factors, including athletic ability and financial need. An athletics scholarship will continue each semester if either of the following takes place: 1. The recipient remains an active member of the sport for which the award was given, and remains eligible and in good academic standing. 2. The recipient suffers a career-ending injury sustained during intercollegiate athletics participation and remains in good academic standing*. (*Severity of such an injury must be agreed upon by medical staff approved by Judson University.) An athletics scholarship could be forfeited if any of the following take place: 1. The recipient quits or is removed from the team. 2. The recipient becomes academically ineligible to participate. 3. The recipient violates Judson’s standards and/or team standards and the acting disciplinary agent determines that such a violation will result in the forfeiture of all or part of the Athletics Scholarship.

(Should the recipient forfeit this award according to the above guidelines, he/she shall immediately become financially responsible to Judson University for the amount of the award in future semesters.)

Transfer Procedures

While we strive to assure that all of our student-athletes have a positive experience at Judson, we realize that there will be some student-athletes who will consider a transfer to another college. In those circumstances, it is very important to remember the following information: 1. You should inform your coach or the athletics director that you are considering a

transfer. (Any four-year institution must inform us that you have contacted them about a potential transfer, so there is no way to keep your transfer “secret”.)

2. Judson does not issue blanket letters giving a student-athlete his/her release for

eligibility purposes. 3. A student-athlete will need to contact the institution(s) he/she is considering and ask

that Judson officially be informed of the student-athlete’s interest in pursuing a transfer. That official contact should be directed to the Judson athletics director.

4. Once Judson has been contacted by another institution indicating a student-athlete’s

interest in transferring, that institution is free to interact with the student-athlete. At some levels of the NCAA, Judson will need to sign a form to approve any interaction.

5. Before eligibility can be established at another institution, Judson will need to receive a

transfer release form. The decision on whether or not to sign the release will be made between the Judson athletics director and the appropriate head coach. In most cases, signing the release form will allow the student-athlete to compete immediately at the other institution. If the decision is made not to sign the form, the student-athlete will be ineligible to compete during his/her first semester at the new institution.

Any questions concerning a possible transfer should be directed to the Athletics Director. Failure to follow the proper procedures could affect your eligibility.

Athletic Equipment, Facilities and Laundry

Each student-athlete is responsible for university-owned equipment assigned to them while in their possession. This is especially important for uniforms. The student-athlete maintains responsibility for their uniform until it is submitted for laundering.

Each student-athlete will receive a laundry loop at the beginning of the year in their assigned locker. Practice gear placed on the laundry loop will be laundered on a daily basis. Laundry not on a loop will not be washed. Washed laundry will be put in each athlete’s locker after being laundered each day. Student-athletes who lose university-owned equipment while in their possession or who do not return equipment at the end of the season will have the cost of the equipment lost charged to their student account.

Social Networking Websites Judson Athletics Department recognizes that social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter are a popular way for students to communicate and network with others. Information, pictures and other content contained on a student athlete’s profile page, however, may have implications for his/her personal safety and image, the image of his/her teammates and coaches, the image of Judson University, university policies regarding conduct, as well as future career and professional opportunities. Students are reminded that pictures and information posted on the internet via programs such as Facebook and Twitter are public information. Pictures or information from these sources that describe or document behavior that are brought to the attention of the University and which reasonably suggest that behavior violating University policy has taken place is subject to further investigation and verification by the University. Any University policy violations that are documented as a result of such an investigation will result in appropriate disciplinary action by the University.

Sports Information/Media Relations Student-athletes have a duty to cooperate with the news media in order to promote the university and the student-athlete experience. Good media relationships can lead to a positive public image for you, your team, and Judson University. The goal of the Judson Sports Information Office is to effectively communicate to the media and other interested parties about the Judson athletic programs. This is done through news releases, interviews and the Judson athletic website www.judsoneagles.com. If any information about you is incorrect, please contact Judson’s Sports Information office immediately. The following are some guidelines for our student-athletes to use when dealing with the media:

1. Never agree to a telephone or personal interview unless the arrangements have been coordinated by the Sports Information Office. Your phone number will never be given out without permission. If a media member calls you, tell him or her to contact the Judson Sports Information Director.

2. Always be available to the media – win, lose or tie. However, you do not have to answer every question asked by the media representative. A proper response to a question that you would rather not answer is, “I’d rather not discuss that subject.” Also, you may always refer a question to your coach or to the Sports Information Director.

3. Be on time for scheduled interviews. Always return phone calls at the appropriate and designated time. Failure to do so reflects poorly on you and Judson University.

4. Do not talk negatively about game officials, opponents, coaches or teammates.

Fundraising Fundraising is vital. It is a means to increase the operating budgets of our programs. Each student-athlete is expected to be involved with the fundraising initiatives that each individual coach implements. All monies raised by a team event or individual go to the designated team athletic account. There will be no refunds to individuals who quit or are removed from the team.

Travel All University policies remain in force while student-athletes are traveling on official University trips. Student-athletes are under the supervision of the coaching staff at all times. Student-athletes are reminded that they represent Judson University and that public impressions of the University may be the direct result of our teams’ conduct. Student-athletes who are academically ineligible to play for a semester and are on the inactive player roster may not attend any games, home or away, that cause them to miss any classes. All student-athletes are expected to travel to and from competitions with their respective teams. Exceptions include returning home with a parent or spouse.

Hazing Judson University does not condone any type of activity which could be considered as hazing or initiation. This includes commission of any act, or conspiring to commit any act that injures, degrades, disgraces or tends to injure, frighten, degrade, or disgrace any person (including the making of annoying, obscene or malicious phone calls). Any incident by a Judson student-athlete will result in disciplinary action.

Sexual Harassment Sexual harassment in any form is a violation of this code of conduct. Sexual harassment is defined as an action intended, either explicitly or implied, to coerce another into sexual relations. It is also the creation of an intimidating, hostile, or offensive situation through verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature. Either men or women can be the subjects of sexual harassment. If you believe you are the victim of sexual harassment by someone in the Judson University community, you should talk to your coach, the athletic director, or the university counselor to determine what options are available to you.
