Judging Model Aircraft
…or, An Introduction to Picking Nits
Better Judging, for a Better Show
Everyone wants fair judging Perceived unfairness = projected
unfairness Standards make for better judging Better judging makes better shows Better shows = more $$$ = pizza
The Basics: Seams
As with any model, seam management is an often over-looked fundamental.
Wings are all seams!!!
The Basics: Glass
Make sure that all glass is fog free
Glue likes to live on clear surfaces
….as do fingerprints
Paint on canopies is KEY!
Good glass!
The Basics: Alignment
Often overlooked Can turn a great model into an OK model,
but not the other way around. Can be subjective (Believe it or not) ie.
FW-190 landing gear.
WINGS!!!!
More wings!
More than just wings!!!
Key-in on general fit issues
Your Attention: Do I still have it?
The Basics: Paint
Just like any other model, keep an eye out for orange peel, over-spray, tools marks under the paint, etc. etc.
Make sure edge masking is straight with no bleed under.
Decals: Easy enough to figure out.
Look for hollow stuff!
There are no excuses. Wins CAN be bought! (even if judges can’t)
These are just the basics…
Base is never considered (exc. Dioramas) Weathering can be considered. Complexity MUST be considered Accuracy (paint, markings, etc.) should
ONLY be considered when everything else is a dead-lock TIE.
Basics knock 90% out of contention.
Eye Candy (keeping with a new tradition)
