Croston Parish Council Newsletter
June 2016
Judging for this year’s North West in Bloom Competition takes place on 6 July.
We are looking to achieve a Gold Award for the third consecutive year and any help you can offer would be gratefully received, whether it is in the form of displays outside your houses, assisting the Croston in Bloom Group (see centre page) or just a bit of general tidying - it all helps with the entry.
Judging also begins in June for the Lancashire Best kept Village Competition and, as general cleanliness and tidiness of the village is taken note of in both this and North West in Bloom, it would be even more helpful if you could assist in keeping everywhere spick and span.

Croston Parish Council Annual Report 2015-2016
The Parish Precept for 2015-16 was set with no increase in cost to residents and the cost for 2016-17 has been held at the same level.
Grants were awarded to the Village Festivities Group for the very popular Christmas Fayre, St Michael’s PCC for the work on the Croft Field, and Croston in Bloom towards start up costs. A noticeable increase in spending came as a result of replacing the Village Green signpost however this was covered by kind donations from residents, Borough and County Councillors and Chorley Community Housing .
The Council continues to employ the Village Lengthsman, Kevin Greenhalgh, who’s dedication and hard work in all weathers helps keep our village largely litter free and our Clerk, Alan Platt.
The Village was, again, entered into the RHS North West in Bloom Competition and, this year, represented the north west in Britain in Bloom. Croston achieved a Gold Award in North West in Bloom and Silver Gilt in Britain in Bloom with Church Street and Croston Station receiving Neighbourhood Awards.

On average, 20 children come into care each week from babies to teenagers and Lancashire County Council needs to find them loving homes.
People across Lancashire are being asked to consider becoming foster carers to provide love and support to these children whilst they are unable to live with their families.
Homes are particularly needed for teenagers and groups of siblings to give them the love and support they deserve while they can't live with their families. We have an excellent package of support to help foster carers in their role, including local support groups, flexible training, a dedicated social worker and out of hours support.
Anyone interested in finding out more about fostering is encouraged to contact the County Council's friendly team on 0300 123 6723 or visit www.lancashire.gov.uk/fostering

Croston St Michael’s Scouts
Our Scout Group is very busy at present, the Scout Section enjoyed a full, fun packed weekend at County Rally in May having the hottest weekend on camp to date! They've also taken part in the Shelter Box Challenge in Liverpool which raises awareness of the great work that Shelter Box does in any disasters. Coming up are survival skills days, the Big Summer Blow out at Bibby's Farm plus all the usual weekly activities.
The Cub Section is looking forward to it's County camp in June. They are celebrating 80 years of Cub Scouting in 2016, starting with a huge day out at Blackpool earlier this year with more celebrations to follow.
The Beaver Section is also celebrating a 30yr birthday (who remembers Beavers starting in Croston?) They had a District Birthday Bash at Bibby's Farm got VERY muddy but had a great time. Lots more activities are planned like the district Splash day, Beaver Sleep-over plus all the usual meeting activities.
As you can see we have very full fun packed programmes for all our sections-to do this we need adults to lead our sections if you feel you can help in any way, the more leaders we have the more we can do.

Tots Group
The Wednesday Group is now back in The Old School.
Trinity St Michael's school hall Wednesday and Tots on Thursday in the Methodist hall 9:30 - 11/11:30am.
We wanted a horticultural emblem that could be planted through-out the village to give a continuous link and identity within the environment. The remit was to chose a plant that showcased the village at its best, looked natural in its surroundings, had the versatility to be used in different locations and was at its proudest on and around Coffee Day. We have therefore chosen Cosmos Sonata as our emblem. If you're planning your summer baskets, tubs, flower beds etc don't forget to include the 'plant of Croston' - Cosmos Sonata!
For more information call Martin on 07597 183 163
We have our judging date - Wednesday 6 July, time to be confirmed – so it’s time to get every-one into action to show just how resilient our village is!
We have started the task of weeding clearing along the pavements etc around the village. We plan to do this in short sessions which will last no more than 1 hour. Over the next few weeks we will be appearing on your street and it would be really helpful if you could spare 30 minutes to help us. Or if gardening isn't your thing we would love it if you popped out with a brew and biscuits for us!! Anybody needing advice for their garden or even questions about pots and hanging baskets, this would be a good chance to pick our brains!!!
Up to date information can always be found on our Facebook page!

News Update
New Mayor for Chorley
Croston resident, Councillor Doreen Dickinson is looking forward to her year in office after being elected as the new Mayor of Chorley.
The current ward councillor for the Lostock ward on Chorley Council, said: “It’s a huge privilege to be Chorley’s First Citizen and I’m really looking forward to meeting as many people as possible, who live, work and volunteer in our borough.”
Her son, Peter Vickers, will be her Consort for her year of office.
Doreen was elected as councillor in Lostock ward in 2000. She has also been a school governor at Bretherton Endowed and Coppull primary schools and has served on the Parochial Church Council at Bretherton Church.
Out Lane Car Park
For over a year now we have been involved in discussions with Lancashire County Council regarding taking over the car park next to the Medical Centre on Out Lane. We are very keen to retain this much needed parking facility for the village.
The process has been delayed whilst Lancashire County Council has been working to try to sell the adjoining strip of land but we are hoping to bring matters to a conclusion shortly and, once the agreement is completed, we’ll be looking to see what improvements are needed for the area.
In the meantime, Lancashire County Council has assured us that, until such time as the transfer is completed, the car park will continue to stay open for residents and visitors alike.

Finney Lane
Finney Lane, off Moss Lane/Drinkhouse Lane, is the latest sign to be sited on Croston Moss.
This sign has been paid for by Quantils, as it was missed off when Chorley Council erroneously put in other signs on the Moss.
After finding out that the signs were on a private road, they would not put one on Finney Lane, so Quantils came to the rescue.
The firm who make the signs even added the Chorley Council logo at no extra cost to match the others.

Recreation Ground
Just a very brief update on the Recreation Ground - Chorley Council has finally told us the amount of funding which is available from developer’s contributions for the project to revitalise the Rec.
The Parish Council has been slowly building up a pot and this, together with funds raised and the developer’s contributions, will now give us a clear picture as to what will be possible.
It is expected new plans will be drawn up which will provide the basis for the project to finally get off the ground and more information will be provided when it is available .

FREE LUNCH??
No, not exactly, but for only £4 you can have pie, peas and gravy, followed by fruit pie and cream!
The venue is the Methodist Church Hall, Westhead Road, and takes place 12 noon every third Thursday of the month and is open to anyone.
The scheme was started by Chorley Council to provide rural areas with somewhere to socialise, and has been continued by June Johnson and Kath Almond.
Croston Co-op, as part of their involvement in community ventures, provide tea, coffee and biscuits, and the staff give up their own time to come and serve it.
It helps to know if your are coming, as the pies have to be ordered, so please ring Kath on 600368 or June on 601163 to let them know.

During the warmer weather, can we remind all residents to check their properties are secure when no-one is home. Foe insurance purposes, your doors and windows should be kept closed and locked.
Doorstep sellers are continuing to visit Croston and surrounding villages. This is because they are convincing householders to make a purchase from them, therefore making it worth their while to keep returning. We would ask that you do not encourage their presence by buying expensive items from them that you can purchase at a fraction of the cost elsewhere.
There have been some concerns raised on Social Media over local youths causing Anti Social Behaviour in Croston and the surrounding villages. If you are the victim of ASB, please report it to the Police on 101, as we cannot deal with it if we don't know about it.
