Donations for Christmas Flowers for St Brigid’s Red Hill: It has been a custom to place a

donation box near the entrance of St Brigid’s Church for the next four weeks accepting

monetary gifts for the flowers. The arrangements that are created are quite stunning.

Thanks for your support, and parish gratitude to the flower arrangers who continue to

create marvellous floral masterpieces.

Ambry: There are three kinds of blessed oil that are used in the sacramental life of the

Church: the oil of catechumens (Baptism), the oil for the anointing of the sick, and the

sacred chrism (Baptism and Confirmation). The Holy Oils are blest by the Archbishop in the

Chrism Mass which is celebrated at the Cathedral towards the end of Lent so that the new

oils are ready for the Easter Vigil. The oils are reserved in a container called an ambry. This

has traditionally been located either in the sanctuary or in the sacristy. In these cases, the

ambry is often a metal box that has been recessed into the wall. The words, Olea Sancta

or ‘Holy Oils” may be inscribed on the door, made out of solid metal with a lock. In newer

churches, the ambry is located near the baptismal font and often incorporates glass so

people can see the oils, rather than their being out of sight when they are encased in wood

or metal. In our parish we have both ambry styles. Ashgrove and Herston have metal

containers. Bardon and Rosalie have glass doors which are in the body of the church. This

week ambrys were installed in Newmarket and Red Hill.

St Ambrose Newmarket.

St Ambrose (339 – 397) was the bishop of Milan whose sermons

influenced Augustine’s decision to become a Christian. Ambrose

was a successful lawyer. In 370 he was appointed governor of

Aemilia in Liguuria, with his residence in Milan. Upon the death of

the local Arian bishop there was street fighting between the Arians

(who held that Christ was a creature and not equal to God) and

orthodox Catholics loyal to the teaching of the Council of Nicaea.

Ambrose appealed for peace between the two sides at the

assembly convened to elect a successor. During his speech, a voice

cried, ‘Ambrose for bishop!” The whole crowd, Arians and orthodox,

took up the chant – an astonishing development given that

Ambrose was not even baptized! He pleaded with the crowd in vain. Within a week he was

baptized and consecrated bishop of Milan. Ambrose gave his personal wealth to the poor

and devoted himself to the study of Scripture and the Fathers of the Church. There is much

more to his story. He is the patron saint of bishops and learning.

Soumi’s university dreams revived after offers flood in: Soumi Gopalakrishnan was the dux of St James

College in inner-city Brisbane who dreamed of becoming a doctor. But as a Sri Lankan Tamil who fled her

home country with her family four years ago, her prospects of going to university were slim. Asylum-seekers

are classed as international full-fee-paying students, meaning they are required to pay the full cost of their

up-front unless offered a rare scholarship. Since sharing her story with the ABC last week, Soumi said she

got scholarship offers from universities”. Among those is an offer from Southern Cross University to cover the

entire cost of her tuition. “It’s just a reminder there are still people out there that care about others.” Soumi

Christmas Concert

2018 ST Ambrose’s invited a special guest to help end the school year in song. Teacher, composer and music liturgist Michael Mangan shared his musical skills with the school as they put together a Christmas concert in the Bolton Centre on the 23rd of November at 6pm

Michael led each Year in presenting two pieces, including carols and liturgical songs, enjoyed by students and parents alike.

Principal John Hinton said he was pleased with the end result of the weeks of practise that each class had put into the Christmas concert. “This Christmas concert was a highlight of the year and a wonderfully unifying event” Mr Hinton Said.

The concert is not only an opportunity to showcase our students’ talents, but also a chance to entertain our families as a way of saying thank you. It’s valuable to be able to take the time to acknowledge our many helpers who contribute their time and talents to making our school a great place to be.

“We really do have a great community and it was so good to see so many people, who have contributed to our community this year, present for these festivities.”

YEAR ONE CHARITY - We had our fabulous poetry recital which closed our English unit on rhyme and rhythm. Thank you to all of the wonderful people who attended. Not only did the students write their own poems, but they created a costume to match their character out of recycled materials and clothes. This was covered by our work in Design and Technology. The children performed their work before an audience with a mixture of confidence and excitement. I was so proud of them and I know those of you who were present were too. The group poem closed the afternoon with a giggle and we were riding high when we left for home.

To help us get in the mood for the Taiko drum visit last Tuesday, we dressed in some yukatas (Japanese cotton kimonos). We took our shoes and socks off and tried some geta (wooden shoes and tabi-socks). We have had a great time learning Japanese this semester.

We look forward to beginning some Christmas craft in the next week. We have worked so hard all year. Time is racing by really fast. Soon we will be in Year Two. How exciting!

YEAR 2 FAITH - The end of the school year is fast approaching, where did the year go? Just two weeks to go!

On Wednesday with much excitement, we went on our very first excursion to Osprey House. Osprey House is an environmental centre located along the wetlands in Griffin. We headed off by bus at 9am. For some of the children, the bus journey was their favourite part of the day! On arrival at Osprey House we were greeted by Caitlin and all of the wonderful volunteers. During the day we learned all about: the local catchment area, threats to our oceans, water conservation and dugongs. Our favourite part of the day was bird watching. We got our own binoculars and we were really lucky to see the Osprey and her brand new baby chicks sitting in the nest. The mum was sitting outside the nest feeding the chicks a yummy lunch of fresh fish.

There were many sleepy heads on the bus journey back to school. We all had a great day and really enjoyed our time at Osprey House.

St Joseph’s St Vinnies

Christmas Appeal In support of our local

St Vincent de Paul Society This year as we lead into the Festive Season, St Joseph’s school is supporting our own parish community by committing to bring in hamper items for our local St Vincent de Paul conference in the Jubilee Parish. SVDP will then distribute items to make a difference to those in need. Each year level has been asked to bring in certain food items, and we have had an amazing response thus far, thank you to our generous Joey’s families.

This week our Student Council hosted a Xmas sock hop to raise money for the SVDP Xmas appeal. We had many, many students dance and sing along in their Xmas tinsel to some carols and some ‘boppy’ dance tunes.

Our Senior choir has been very busy. On Wednesday we travelled to the Wesley hospital and sang Christmas carols in their chapel, in the hospital foyer and in the children’s ward. The patients and staff were very welcoming and we had a terrific time. There were lots of smiles all round, well done Senior choir!

Next week is our last week at school for 2018. We will celebrate this with an end of year whole school mass on Wednesday at 9am in St Mary Magdalene Church. Our Year 6 students will come together with their families for their Thanksgiving liturgy on Thursday evening. Report cards are due out on Monday and 2019 classes will be announced too. School finishes at 12 noon on Friday 7 December.

Apostles Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ,

his only Son, our Lord, who was

conceived by the Holy Spirit,

(all bow)

born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under

Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was

buried; he descended into hell; on the third day

he rose again from the dead; he ascended into

heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God

the Father almighty; from there he will come to

judge the living and the dead. I believe in the

Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the

communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Gloria

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will.

We praise you, we bless you, We adore you, we glorify you, We give you thanks for your great glory,

Lord God, heavenly King, O God, Almighty Father.

Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,

You take away the sins of the world,

have mercy on us; You take away the sins of the world,

receive our prayer;

You are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.

For you alone are the Holy One,

you alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ,

with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.

Amen.
