What to give? How to give? Why to give? When to give? Do I have to give? I love questions like this! I was even asked if, as a pastor, do I give? My short answer: Give, if you believe. Give, according to what you’ve been given… I be- lieve. And I know this pastor has been very blessed. These are common questions church members, both young and old, and visitors ponder as the offering plate comes around or as they’re filling out their Simply Giving online-offering plan. True, most won’t ask these questions out loud, but they are the questions on their minds. And, often times, there are just as many answers as there are people asking! Thankfully, our Bibles provide guidance. There was a time when 10% (tithe) of all you reaped through your labor was to be given to the Lord. It was written in the Law: “Each year you are to set aside a tenth of all the produce grown in your fields.” Deuteronomy 14:22 God ordered tithing to the chosen people of Israel in the Old Testament economy to establish that “you will always learn to fear the LORD your God.” It was a practice used, in part, to instill obedience to the authority of God. Christians, now under the New Covenant, are no longer required to tithe. Today, the offering we give to God is given freely. We give in thanksgiving for the blessings that we receive, as His chil- dren. We give with the understanding that there is nothing we have that has not first been given to us (1 Corinthians 4:7). It is true, we are not under the law of the Old Testament any longer, but instead we live in His grace. Our offerings are a way to give thanks for God's work through our church, and to support His missions outside the church. Paul’s second letter to the church in Corinth, the entire 9 th chapter, speaks on the motivation of believers to give. “The person who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the person who sows generously will also reap gen- erously. 7 Each person should do as he has decided in his heart— not reluctantly or out of necessity, for God loves a cheerful giver.” When we give to a church that is doing God’s work, we are to give out of a cheerful heart. If our giving is motivated by feelings of obli- gation, or to make up for something we’ve neglected, we should expect no benefit or blessing. Continued page 2

WHAT’S INSIDE

PASTOR JACK’S COLUMN Not long ago I was asked about giving to the church. What to give? How to give? Why to give? When to give? Do I have to give? I love questions like this! I was even asked if, as a pastor, do I give? My short answer: Give, if you believe. Give, according to what you’ve been given… I be-lieve.

We give in thanksgiving for the blessings that we receive, as His chil-dren. We give with the understanding that there is nothing we have that has not first been given to us (1 Corinthians 4:7). It is true, we are not under the law of the Old Testament any longer, but instead we live in His grace. Our offerings are a way to give thanks for God's work through our church, and to support His missions outside the church.

Paul’s second letter to the church in Corinth, the entire 9th chapter, speaks on the motivation of believers to give. “The person who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the person who sows generously will also reap gen-erously. 7 Each person should do as he has decided in his heart—not reluctantly or out of necessity, for God loves a cheerful giver.” When we give to a church that is doing God’s work, we are to give out of a cheerful heart. If our giving is motivated by feelings of obli-gation, or to make up for something we’ve neglected, we should expect no benefit or blessing.

GotQuestions.org shared this insight: “Paul states that believers should set aside a por-tion of their income as an offering, but this is not a tithe (1 Corinthians 16:1–2). An offering is that which is freely given by Christians to the work of the Lord, the local church, and/or ministries and missions. But offerings are far more than simply the check we write on Sunday. We are to offer much more to God than our monetary re-sources. Romans 12:1 exhorts us to offer our bodies “as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God” as part of our wor-ship. Romans 6:13 gives the reason for of-fering ourselves: because we are “those who have been brought from death to life,” and, as such, we are to “offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of right-eousness.”

God is not nearly as interested in our monetary offerings as He is in our submis-sion and obedience. The truth is that He doesn’t need our resources to accomplish His plans and purposes. After all, He owns the cattle on a thousand hills (Psalm 50:10) and needs nothing from us. What He de-sires, however, and what He values, is the heart that overflows with gratitude and thanksgiving to the God who saved us and who gives us all things, knowing our needs before we even ask (Matthew 6:8). Such a heart gives generously, willingly, and cheer-fully in response to the love and grace that abound in Christ (2 Corinthians 9:6–8).

What, how, why, and when should I give? Maybe the best answer to that will result from a self-examination of what you’ve re-ceived. God has given His best, held noth-ing back in the sacrifice of His Son, for your sake. If you believe in the work of His church and His mission, support it in a way that represents your belief; through your time, talents, and earnings. The prophet Malachi shared the Lords words to those who chose to honor Him with their gifts. The Lord said, “Test Me in this way, see if I

will not open the floodgates of heaven and pour out a blessing for you without meas-ure.” (Malachi 3:10)

May God continue to bless you, as you bless others and seek His guidance. Thanks for reading, and thanks for asking questions like this!

CONGREGATIONAL CARE Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God

of all comfort, who comforts us in all our af-fliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the com-fort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 This epistle tells us God helps us through difficult times not only because He loves us and wants to help us but also so we can share God’s love and comfort with those who are hurting. Many of us have lost a loved one, experienced depression or loneliness. Some have gone through chronic pain, job loss or any of a number of possible afflic-tions. We all have experiences that we can share how God’s grace and love helped heal and comforted us. If you read the prayer requests in the worship bulletin any Sunday or receive prayer re-quests through the prayer chain, you know there are many people in our community ex-periencing hard times. Jesus himself calls us to love God and to love others. We can do this by: visiting and help-ing those in need listen attentively to their conversation speak words of comfort and encouragement pray with them. God may supply those in need of comfort and encour-agement through you.

WOMEN OF TRINITY HAPPENINGS We held our May meeting on the 2nd, fol-

lowed by a salad luncheon.

A check for $100.00 was sent to the Jayme Closs fund raiser in Barron, which was May 4th.

Donnarae Carrell will purchase the flow-ers for our group for the Bell Tower plant-er and the outdoor service planter, and we will reimburse her. June Ehrich volun-

teered to purchase the flowers for the Memorial Garden, as she does every year.

Our monthly meeting will be moved back to the third Thursday of each month, starting at 11:00 a.m.

By the time this is published in the June issue of the ‘Journey,’ the kitchen should be sparkling clean, with two teams work-ing on cleaning it May 9th and May 16th.

A group of ladies met on May 7th to measure and cut red felt banners for the Lion’s Club.

Our next meeting will be June 20th, 11:00 a.m., in the Fellowship Hall.

ANNUAL CHURCH RUMMAGE

SALE SEPTEMBER 6 & 7 The Women of Trinity will hold the annual church rummage sale the weekend of Sep-tember 6th and 7th, Friday and Satur-day. This sale will coincide with the Birch-wood Area Rummage Sales and is a really big deal. But to make it a success we need to have church members and friends save their valuable and usable items until the week of September 2nd, when items can be brought to the Fellowship Hall. We cannot accept items too large to move, and no com-puters, printers, televisions, etc. All money earned goes toward end-or-the-year local charities and sup-port for our church projects.

MISSIONS AND OUTREACH We here at Trinity (and the US) really have it very easy; not having to worry about the ba-sics like food, water, clothing and a safe place to live. Haiti has been devastated by many hurricanes in the past couple of years. That along with a corrupt government has made life hard for many Haitians.

Gladys works to see that children are edu-cated. In the words of the young girl that Trinity sponsors, she wishes to be "the per-son God wants her to be."

Gladys' summer job is going to churches and speak of her "kids" and more important-ly to find sponsors for them. The cost of sponsorship allows the child to attend school for a year. If not for such sponsorships, these children would be unable to attend school.

For the past several years Missions & Out-reach has collected clothes for Gladys' kids while collecting items for Lutheran World

Relief. You'll notice the Baby Shower Crib is once again set up in the narthex. There are lists of items needed for LWR Baby Kits. Gladys takes the items that LWR will not take. She will also take any size children and adult clothing. It is their proud tradition to dress up for church services. Items for Gladys will need to be in by June 23rd. There is also a possibility that Gladys would need lodging for the night before. With the coming of nice weather also comes gar-age/rummage sale time!! This is an excellent opportunity to get out and look for deals on clothing for babies and kids of all ages. Karen Hayes
