If you ever dreamed of spending the night at the Palace of Versailles, you won’t have long to wait. Home to the French monarchy since Louis XIV, Versailles is a monument to royal grandeur. Be-ginning in 2012, one of the mansions of this cherished French cultural landmark will be turned into a five-star luxury hotel.

Originally known as the Hotel du Grand Controle, the mansion was built in the 1680s to serve as the offices and home of the king's treasurer, where he lived with his family and servants. This residence along with the rest of Versailles, was evacuated during the French Revolution. Restoration will take place in 2011 and be overseen by France's top historical architect. This restoration is the first in a series of commercial projects aimed at saving French monuments.

The new luxury property will have 23 rooms and be renamed the Hotel de l’Orangerie after the greenhouse where Louis XIV stored his 1,700 orange and palm trees throughout the winter months.

In January 2012, when the Hotel de l'Orangerie is completed, it will be the first time in 300 years overnight guests will be able to literally follow in Louis XIV’s footsteps, while drinking champagne and strolling the gardens of Versailles like royalty.

Happy 75th Anniversary DC-3! This past December, American Airlines celebrated the 75th anniversary of the DC-3’s first flight in 1935. It was an American Airlines president who purchased the first DC-3s because the airline wanted a plane with sleeper seats.

The first DC-3 entered service on June 25, 1936 between Chicago Municipal Airport (later renamed Midway) and Newark. Passengers paid $47.19 for the 4 hour flight and within three years 95% of all passengers in the US were flying on DC-2 or DC-3s. By December 1941, 434 DC-3s were in commercial airline use.

In 1934 before the DC-3, American Airlines was operating a cross country service that took a whopping 38 1/2 hours! It included an overnight train from New York to Cleveland, followed by a six-stop flight to Dallas then a seven-stop trip to Los Angeles. The amazing DC-3 did it in just 17 hours and 45 minutes from Newark to LA with just three stops! Now, nonstop flights from coast to coast are only about 6 hours long. We’ve come a long way in a relatively short time!

To this day American Airlines is proud of its leading roll in the development of this aircraft. Flagship Knoxville, a lovingly resorted 1940 DC-3 is the centerpiece exhibit at the American Airlines CR Smith Museum in Dallas, Texas.

You’ll “LAVA” the Big Island! Although we have an active volcano in our own backyard, we didn’t get the chance to actually see any lava flowing from Mt. St. Helens.

On Hawaii’s Big Island however, Kilauea’s current eruption has been ongoing since l983. Exciting changes two years ago opened up volcano viewing in two locations.

In 2008, a vent opened at Halema’uma’u Crater, and ash and gasses are venting in a plume from Kilauea’s summit (near Jaggar Museum). There is a second active site about 12 miles east of the summit (outside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park) where lava flowing through lava tubes breaks out and enters the ocean close to the visitor viewing area at the end of Hwy 130.

Visitors are welcome to view the lava, but you’ll need good closed walking shoes, and a flashlight since the best viewing is after dark. Be prepared to walk about a mile round trip over rough lava, but it is worth the effort. Conditions are unpre-dictable and constantly changing so there is a re-corded message for visitors about the lava viewing at the end of Hwy 130 (808) 961-8093.

Honolulu is the “largest” city in the world!

That’s because Hawaii’s state constitution states

that any island not named as belonging to a

county belongs to Honolulu. This makes the entire

island of Oahu, where Honolulu is located, plus all

the other small, uninhabited islands, known as the

Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, part

of Honolulu. Honolulu is about

1,500 miles (2,414 km) long. Or in

other words, it spans the distance

from Los Angeles to Denver!

Aloha!
