PLM Vision
“Make it Visual”• BOM & design data are managed in one integrated
solution
• Design process artifacts are change controlled & integrated to the BOM, forming a Bill of Information
• Visual reporting facilitates improved decision making
• Collaboration across extended enterprise is supported with appropriate information access
• Design geometry is easily shared across the extended enterprise (including suppliers)
“Make Value Flow”• Downstream flow of product & process data
enables success of Manufacturing and Product Support
• Sales & marketing strategy linked to product BOI
• JT represents the geometry master & is the common currency for downstream processes

Virtual Reviews, Audits & Builds
What is a Virtual Event?
Virtual Reviews
3D visualisation software used to:
Conduct & improve configuration concept studies
Identify geometry/process/supplier related issues
Facilitate CPPD discussions during product, system, and component design activities
Virtual Audits
3D visualisation software in conjunction with external SME’s, used to:
Conduct structured design reviews focused toward area of expertise, e.g.
Manufacturing
Service
Safety
Virtual Builds
3D visualisation software used to:
Validate/ simulate real-world build conditions prior to Iron build
Assemble-ability
Safety & Ergonomics
Precedence of assembly

– % Total JT
• Total # of BOM lines with a JT file divided by Total # of BOM lines
– % Complete for Engineering Use Case
• Total BOM lines meeting Engineering criteria divided by Total # of BOM lines
– % Usable & Up-to-Date Use Case
• Total usable parts in usable assemblies divided by total parts in the top level

Summary:
• Caterpillar’s current JT validation processes are
primarily focused on translation success and
completeness of the JT BOM
• Successfully translated JT files have been
geometrically accurate enough for our primary design
review, assembly planning & product support use cases
• New use cases for NC Programming, Machine Shop
Process Planning & Supplier Collaboration will require
validation of B-Rep and PMI accuracy
