THIS wasn’t supposed to hap-pen. I thought I’d be discussing skinissues with my daughters whenthey entered their teens. Instead,my 2-year-old already knows theword “pimple” from pointing toa blemish on my chin and asking,“What’s that, Ima?”

Like me, many women discov-er that leaving their teens behinddoesn’t mean saying goodbye tothe acne and hormonal breakoutsthat result when the skin’s naturaloil combines with bacteria and otherforeign substances. A study in theJournal of the American Academy ofDermatology found that 35.2% ofwomen had acne in their 30s, with the num-ber dropping to 26.3% for women in their 40sand 15.3% for women in their 50s.

what’s to blame? Most doctors and scientists point the finger for adult acne

at something our bodies can’t do without: hormones. Stressand heredity also increase your risk of being troubled by acne, and both are hard to do much about. But, there are some otherfactors you may be able to change for the better.

For starters, if you find your skin suddenly getting worseafter starting a prescription, check with your doctor. Some pre-scription medicines can be the chief culprit in breakouts.

Take a look at your current makeup and skin-care products.Avoid using items that aren’t labeled non-cosmetogenic or non-acnegenic. Bothering your face can also be things you don’tactually put on your face. For example, cutting back on dailyhair washing will reduce the amount of oil that comes in con-tact with the skin.

Pat Bilek, director of aesthetics with Mario’s InternationalSpas & Hotels, recommends trying to wash your hands moreoften. Without realizing it, she notes, women introduce bacte-ria by leaning their hands against their face. Anything else thattouches your face frequently can also cause problems, so cleanyour home and work phone, as well as your cell phone andglasses on a frequent basis.

turn over a new leafJill Gunton, an aesthetician at Beachwood Plastic Surgery &

Medical Spa, points out that the key to better skin is keeping theskin cells moving, making sure dead cells are being taken off thetop to open up pores and bring newer, moisture filled cells to thesurface. Start with a good cleanser, one that is specific to yourskin type. Gunton recommends applying the cleanser with askin-care brush, which can do a better job of removing cosmet-

ics, oil and dirt. Both Bilek ofMario’s and Karmen Endress ofBeachwood Plastic Surgery &Medical Spa stress the impor-tance of cleansing your facebefore you go to bed at night.“It doesn’t matter if you aretired, you have to get yourskin clean,” says Bilek. Cleanskin is also able to “breathe”and better absorb moisturizer, she says.

Endress and Gunton alsorecommend using a skin-care

product that relies on Retin-A orRetinol to speed exfoliation and

cell turnover. They caution, howev-er, to take it slowly. Used too much or

too often, these products can cause side-effects such as redness or peeling. Products

with salicylic acid and/or benzoyl peroxide —whether from a doctor’s office, spa or store — may

also be the ticket, although aestheticians warn to be carefulnot to over-dry the skin with any of these products.

a little bit moreIf what you are trying at home isn’t working, spas can offer

additional options. Among the most popular is microder-mabrasion, which removes the dead skin cells from the skin’ssurface (the stratum corneum). Chemical peels — which alsocause the exterior layer of the skin to come off to revealsmoother skin below — come in a variety of strengths. Facialsare particularly good for extracting both blackheads and white-heads. Check with the spa or spas you are considering, as theymay offer a free consultation before you commit to a procedure.

It’s also worth looking at your healthcare insurance; somewill cover skin-care products if they are prescribed by a doctor.

sunshine behind the cloudsSome spas also offer light therapies that have proven effec-

tive in combating breakouts, but don’t fall prey to the myththat ordinary sunlight is a good treatment for acne. While thepigmentation of a light tan may cover the discoloration ofblemishes, it’s not worth the wrinkles and other damage causedby sun exposure.

Like everyone else, those with blemishes need to apply skin-care product with sunscreen — such as a moisturizer, founda-tion or powder — each and every day. After all, one of thebright sides of having the oily skin that is prone to blemishes isthat the extra oil blocking pores and trapping dirt also keepsthe skin looking younger and more elastic. I may be on the farside of 30, but while my daughter learned “pimple” fromstudying my face, she doesn’t yet know the word “wrinkle”!

DESIGNER Kris Weisblatt grew up Catholic in upstateNew York. She didn’t know anyone Jewish. When she mar-ried Adam, she grew to love his Jewish traditions andheritage.

“I love just being around his family. They’re very close-knit and open with each other,” she says. The warm wel-come she received from the Weisblatt mishpochah (family)inspired her to raise her children, Dylan, 5, and Evan, 22months, Jewish. She liked the easy way his family related toeach other, for instance using bubele (sweet baby) as theirpet name for, well, everyone.

A complicated delivery with Evan caused Weisblatt tosee everything in a new light. Recovering herself and caringfor a newborn and a toddler wasn’t a comfortable fit withher old business of manufacturing and importing clothing. She found the simplicity of those sleepless days with a new-born – nurse the baby, change a diaper, change baby’sclothes, take a nap, take a walk – pulling her in a new direc-tion.

Weisblatt began designing baby clothes for little ones up

to size 24 months in simple, bright colors, often in vividcombinations and patterns.

The family term of endearment provided the name forher line. Bubele Baby is available at www.bubelebaby.com.What makes her designs so unique?

• Bubele onesies have a loop for attaching a pacifier or atoy. What parent hasn’t frantically looked for a lost “suckything,” as Weisblatt calls it? “Parents find them years laterbehind the couch. Now they won’t get lost.”

• The Bubele Bib has a soft terrycloth roll around theneck to catch dribbles and keep baby clean and dry.

• The swaddling blankets are a soft stretchy knit.Weisblatt found traditional receiving blankets too stiff totuck in the ends and keep the baby wrapped tightly. It’s alsobig enough to use as a cover-up for nursing, she adds.

• Bubele Baby’s slightly retro color combinations, likechocolate brown and blue; or sage green and vanilla, are afar shout from typical baby pastels.

• Moms and dads also will love the prices – $12 to $16for onesies and “lounge pants.”

WHEN Jamie Kreitman became a bat mitzvah in the ’70s,her parents gave her the choice of a dog or a sewing machineas a gift to mark the occasion. Who knows what might havehappened if she’d chosen the dog, but fashionistas every-where are happy Kreitman followed the path she did.

Now married and a mother, Kreitman is a success-ful designer with celebrity clients like socialite ParisHilton and country singer Carrie Underwood, bothbig fans of Kreitman’s embellished tees andintricately designed ballet flats and flip-flops.

Kreitman’s upscale, contemporary linesare more than just everyday wear. The topsand sweaters, T-shirts, track suits, ballet flats,flip-flops and bags are jazzed up with crystals, sequins and bows.

The loose, whimsical design of a Jamie Kreitman top lendsitself to the casual and comfortable look the designer pridesherself on. The intricate details found in the sequins andthe flair found on the stitching or across the chest of ashirt help to make each top a little fancier. Subtlebows add a flirty, feminine look to sweaters.Kreitman’s designs are all “very comfortable andcasual but still look good and presentable,” she says.Tops range from $65 for T-shirts to $165 for sweaters.

Fashionistas donning Jamie Kreitman flip-flops orballet flats are sure to draw attention to their feet. On thetop of nearly every shoe, a jewel glimmers in the light, addinga touch of sophistication to an otherwise simple shoe. The jew-els are pieces of art in themselves, sometimes in the shape of aheart or bow, sometimes with fabric positioned underneath, adding another an accent color to the footwear. Flip-flops startat $45.

Kreitman draws inspiration from her extensive travels andreading, as well as from vintage clothing and jewelry. Thedesigner is involved in every step of the design process, fromenvisioning the concept to sketching and creating the sample. That kind of involvement, she admits, is unusual in the fashionworld.

Although greatly influenced by her mother’s and grand-mother’s love of fashion and style, Kreitman didn’t initially fol-low her passion for design. Instead, the daughter of RabbiBenjamin Z. Kreitman, executive V.P. emeritus of the UnitedSynagogue of Conservative Judaism, spent more timeimmersed in books than in fabric. She earned her master’s inMiddle Eastern studies, Hebrew, and language from ColumbiaUniversity.

During that time, Kreitman says, “the only path a goodJewish girl took was either law or medicine. Studying rabbinicswasn’t open to females.” Armed with a master’s in Arabic, she

took a job working for the Jewish Agency inNew York.

But after a half year, her love for fashionwas still strong, and the designer enrolled innight classes in the Fashion Institute of

Technology (FIT) one-year program, focusing onsportswear design. “It was a real change from

academia,” Kreitman says. “I loved it. They putyou through the fire, like ‘Project Runway.’”

The intense courses focused on the technicalaspects of the profession. Kreitman thrived andwon the prestigious Critic’s Choice Award forher final project. After completing the FIT pro-gram and a quick start designing briefly forTahari, Kreitman launched her own line in1990, which consisted of ’60s-style knittedtunics and colorful knitted suits.

The New Jersey resident start-ed by analzying the fashionchoices of women in New Yorkand the suburbs. “People werelooking a little schleppy,” shenotes. “Women were not really

dressing formally for anything.” To solve the problem, Kreitman

wanted to create a line that was casu-al but still stylish and acceptable for

social occasions. She began working onembellished T-shirts, track suits and flip-flops,

the ideas and designs that have kept her in businessfor 18 years. “I’m a veteran,” she marvels. “Not many peoplelast this long. I started as a sweater designer.”

Kreitman’s academic background surprises many, includingher own father. “Sometimes he introduces me as the designerwho is also an Arabic scholar,” she laughs. “People often con-sider designers fluff and drama queens. But education helpsyou with everything; it puts you a step above the fray.”

Kreitman designs clothing and runs her business whilemaintaining a strong connection to her Judaism. In her freetime, Kreitman studies Talmud, sharpens her near-fluentHebrew skills, and is active in her synagogue.

A strong Zionist, Kreitman turned down the opportunity tosell her designs in Dubai and “other situations that make meuncomfortable.” In addition, there are no crosses or any simi-lar religious symbols found in Kreitman’s designs, althoughcustomers have requested it.

“I don’t make long skirts and modest wear,” she says. “Ilike to have fun with what I do; I want (my clothing) to besmile-worthy. And that is the biggest mitzvah of all.”

THE first thing Ellen Cohn does upon moving to a new house is hang her wall of familyphotos.

She’s had lots of practice. Ellen, her husband Steve, and their two sons, now grown, havelived in eight different homes in the 29 years the couple has been married.

Three years ago, they moved into their current Pepper Pike house, a spacious fieldstone andtaupe-sided colonial with multiple rooflines. For the previous four years, they lived in a near-by home that they sold after an unsolicited buyer offered them a price they could not refuse.Prior to that, they resided in Boca Raton, Atlanta and Connecticut.

“We look forward to moving,” says Ellen, a Toledo native. “We like the challenge.” “We like change,” echoes Steve, an Orange High School grad whose lifelong friends and

family live in the Cleveland area. The Cohns’ secret to retaining their sanity and enjoying every move? French country décor.

Except for their brief foray as newlyweds into contemporaryglass, Lucite, and gray hues, every home the Cohns have ownedhas been decorated throughout in charming, colorful Frenchcountry. Most of their furniture was purchased in Florida andhas worked in every subsequent house “like it was meant to be,”

Ellen says. In every home, she

reuses and reshuffles allher favorite furnishings, perhaps moving anarmoire from the bed-room to the office or aliving room end table toan upstairs guest bed-room. “I have a senti-mental attachment to mythings,” says Ellen. “Allare meaningful to me. Idon’t like to part withanything. Our homedefines who we are.”

Their home alsoreflects Ellen’s love ofrich florals and her flairfor mixing different pat-terns. She’s unified thenearly 5,000 square-foot,four-bedroom home witha camel and cream colorscheme, a neutral canvas

From the light-filled, two-story foyer with its dark oak floorsand navy and red Oriental rug, French doors open to Steve’sstudy – he works from home in the women’s apparel business.

The floor-to-ceiling desk and hutch that used to be in their son’sbedroom dominates the room.

variety of styles in every room. (The Cohns have learned toignore all the chimes.) Roosters, a former collectible, alsoabound. Ellen currently scours antique shows for delicateteacups that are displayed in a yellow-painted, distressed hutchin the foyer.

To the left of the foyer is the dining room, papered in Ellen’sfavorite blue and white floral, which she’s ordered three times fordifferent homes. A country-style blonde buffet, dark wood tableand cane-back dining chairs glow under the crystal chandelieronce belonging to Steve’s parents.

Beyond the foyer is the light-filled living room, which overlooks the deck and wooded backyard.A multi-hued needlepoint tapestry hangs over tex-tured cream sofas. An oversized armoire and apainted wood bar complete the room.

While a door can close off the adjacent masterbedroom, bath and room-sized closet, the Cohns, members of Park Synagogue, prefer to leave theentry open to visually extend the space. A strikingpatchwork coverlet in brown, rose and green complements thebedroom’s dark hardwood floors and the wicker bombe chestswith stone tops flanking the bed. There’s also a large pinearmoire, a period reproduction like the others throughout thehome, which houses the TV.

Across the hall in the master bath, in front of a large window,a freestanding, curvaceous white tub with period nickel faucets

and hardware adds to the home’s French look. Limestone floorsand counters, paisley brown wall paper, Persian rug, and glass-enclosed shower stall add to the refined luxury.

The other side of the home, set off with pale limestone floorsthroughout, contains the kitchen, breakfast area and familyroom. Here the Cohns spend most of their time. An island withoff-white cabinetry divides the kitchen work area – with its gran-ite counters, stainless steel appliances, and dark walnut-stainedcupboards – from the family room. A fruit bowl created with

mosaic tiles provides a focal point on the cook-top backsplash.

In the multi-windowed, two-story familyroom, a crimson rug contrasts with the expan-sive cream sectional accented with blue pat-terned pillows. After 12 years in the Florida sun-shine, Ellen says they couldn’t live with low ceil-ings and dim light.

And come summer in Cleveland, they’re out-side, enjoying their backyard deck surrounded

by leafy woods. In three short years, the Cohns have shaped a distinctive, wel-

coming and comfortable home. Ellen’s already thinking abouther Thanksgiving dinner, with the entire family gathered roundthe dining room table.

Color, warmth, flowers and family, Ellen muses. “That’s whatI like.”

FINANCIAL planner Scott Kinsell wishes he could fixthe economy as well as he can repair a broken window frame.

“I enjoy working with my hands because my progress istangible,” says the Solon resident. “I talk to my clients all day,and even though I give solid advice, forces beyond my controlcan affect their financial outcomes.” But he can control thefinal products he creates or mends in his home workshop.“And I’m not worrying about losing money,” he quips, “justmy fingers.”

When Kinsell and his wife Lauren designed their home, theydivided their spacious basement into three sections. One washis workshop, and the other two areas were dedicated to fam-

ily activities, including a separate play area for the couple’stwin daughters.

Although his workshop is never picture-perfect, it isextremely functional. “When I told the builder to install sixfour-foot overhead lights, he asked me if I was planning to cutdiamonds downstairs. But when he saw all my tools and wood-working equipment, my request made sense to him.”

Kinsell also had his builder wire the area with high-voltagelines, install plumbing for a large sink, and put in a dust col-lection system. “Along with repairing, building and painting allsorts of things, I make wine and beer in my workshop,” heexplains. “My wife is thrilled that she never sees any of this

mess in the rest of the house.”Some home handymen guard their workshops and don’t

like other people working with their tools, notes Kinsell. Nothim.

“I’m grateful that my relatives and neighbors feel comfort-able dropping by and borrowing a tool or asking me to fixsomething for them,” he says. “And my father-in-law takes allthe credit for organizing my workshop. I’d be happy workingin a jumbled hodgepodge, but he’s the one putting labels onnail boxes and arranging my tools and supplies on pegboardsand shelves.”

...Dentist Dick Cohen might be called a closet home handy-

man. When he and his wife Judy moved to their ShakerHeights condominium, he consolidated all his tools into a largeguest closet. He installed pegboard on the sides of the closetand put in a small workbench.

“Although I don’t use my tools very much now, when work-men come to our place and need a special tool, I share one ofmine,” says Cohen proudly.

Cohen began collecting tools so he could make repairs in hisfamily’s vacation home in Canada. “Out of necessity I becamea home handyman,” he admits.

...When Herb Wainer attended high school at Western

Reserve Academy in Hudson, his fellow students received meritawards for excellence in subjects like mathematics, French,

English history and Latin.“I was a very good student, but unlike many of my class-

mates, I loved working with my hands,” relates Wainer. “Whenthe awards were announced, my award was in shop. I had builta boat in woodworking class and was recognized for thataccomplishment.”

Wainer’s love of woodworking continues to sail along andis reflected in his basement home workshop. The large, invitingspace, which is permeated with the smell of freshly sawn andnewly planed wood, is a welcome haven for the Moreland Hillsresident. Woods of varying colors, textures and shapes fill theshelves along with an assortment of power and hand toolsWainer has collected and customized over the years.

There are also sketchpads in Wainer’s workshop filled withdrawings. “An essential part of woodworking is the planningand thinking about a project before the actual execution,” heexplains. “I have to know ahead of time how I plan to havethings fit together and the type of ideal wood for the project.”

The fruits of Wainer’s efforts can be seen throughout hishome. Stools with inlaid wood, multi-hued coffee tables, deco-rative Lazy Susans with inlaid designs, and a customized drybar are among his functional furniture and decorative pieces.

His love of woodworking is so … ingrained … in him thatWainer even enjoys drudgery jobs like sanding and planing. “Ilike to go downstairs before I go to my company (HorizonsInc.), just to sand a board for a few minutes so I can feel andsmell the wood beneath my hands,” he says.

Dick Cohen keeps his tools handy in a closet workshop. Woodworker Herb Wainer has created inlaid wooden tables, LazySusans, a dry bar, and works of art in his woodworking studio.

THE only way to truly appreciate the 2009 GMC YukonHybrid is to drive with the radio off and all the windows rolledup. Just do it, and you’ll experience how eerily quiet this 5,000-pound behemoth gets, even at high speeds.

The sound of silence and the SUV’s 50% improvement in gasmileage over similar models are the Yukon’s two most notewor-thy calling cards. While the solidly built vehicle’s heft takes somegetting used to, overall the Yukon offers a friendly (if pricey) ride.

The hybrid Yukon’s 21 miles per gallon is, frankly, amazingfor a full-sized SUV, as normally drivers would be hard-pressedto get 14 city mpg from one of these two-and-a-half ton beasts.Happily, this excellent fuel economy still comes with a powerfulV-8 engine, room for eight passengers, and 6,000 pounds of tow-ing capacity.

Helping the environment comes at a price. The front-wheel-drive Yukon hybrid starts at around $52,000, while the four-wheel-drive model begins at $55,000. You should expect to payabout a $10,000 premium for the hybrid technology, which willlikely take a few years to recoup in fuel savings alone.

The hybrid’s “two-mode” technology starts with a burly 6.0-liter V-8, which is coupled with a pair of 60-kW motors pack-aged within the transmission. Together, they produce 332 hp and367 lb.-ft. of torque. Similar to other full hybrids, the Yukon canbe propelled up to around 25 mph solely under electric power, while the V-8’s cylinder-deactivation system helps reduce fuelconsumption at higher speeds. When the electric motor kicks induring braking, the transition from gas to electric is virtuallyundetectable.

Driving the full-sized Yukon does take some work. The vehi-cle’s mass makes curving around exit ramps or hitting sharp cor-ners a bit of an adventure at first. I also found braking to betricky initially, as the SUV does not come to an immediate stopeven when you forcefully depress the brake pedal.

Inside, the Yukon’s leather-wrapped interior is handsome andspacious. It includes a two-tone instrument panel with LED-backlit instrumentation, chrome trim, and a high center stack forthe climate control and audio systems. Its easy-to-use center dis-play screen incorporates animation showing the flow of powerthrough the hybrid drivetrain.

If you need a vehicle this large, the Yukon hybrid’s fuel econ-omy; quiet, spacious cabin; and towing capacity make this SUVa solid, environmentally friendly purchase.
