What is JSPS?
• Established in 1932
- through an endowment by Emperor Showa.
• Japan’s core funding agency
• The entire spectrum of academic fields

JSPS: A Funding Agency for “Science”
JSPS funds:■ Researches
- Grants-in-Aid, “KAKENHI”: $2 Billion /80,000 projectsfor researchers at Japanese Institutions, regardless of their nationality
■ Fellowships - for 6,000 pre-/post-docs
■ Mobility- from pre-docs to professors, 10,000 researchers
■ International Collaborations-Bi- and Multi- lateral
JSPS selects through:■ Bottom-up approach: invite applications through open calls■ Competitive funding: conduct evaluations via peer review■ Fair and transparent screening:
Make selections based on academic merit

• Through this program…build cooperative research networks with Japanese researchers

More than 100 young researchers participate from six countries

• Orientation Sessions: SOKENDAI (Graduate University
