This MS., which I bought of Messrs R. D. Dickinson of 89 Farringdon Street,E.C., on March 3o, 1899, for a guinea, comprises 316 ff. (some, such as ff. 3rz*3r5,missing) of zr x r2'5 c. and r5l l . , writ ten in a good and clear ta' l íq wíth rubrications,undated, the first two pages ornamented with floral designs in gold.

A fine large MS. with pictorial lacquer siàí.s illustrating incidents in the lives
of $irfí saints, containing the l{wttiyytít, or complete works, of the eminent mystical
poet Shaykh Farídu'd-Dín 'A6ár. See vol. tr of my Literary Í{istor"y d Persia,
pp. 506-5 r 5, and especially pp. 509-5 r r, where attention is called to the extraordinary
discrepancies of various biographers as to the year of his death, the dates given for
which vary between 589/r r93 and f izlt234-5. According to the most circumstantial
account (given by Dawlatsháh, whose inaccuracy is, however, notorious) he perished
in the."lk of Nísháprir, his native town, by the Mongols in 6z7lr22g-rz3o. Other
MSS. of the Kwttiyyd.t of 'Ag1ár, or portions of them, are described by Rieu
(Persian Catalogue, pp. 576-53o); Ethe (Bodleian Pers. Cat., cols. 498-5o6;India Office Pers. Cat,, cols. 6r z-627), etc.
This MS. was brought to Cambridge with others by Prince 7=ahíru's-Sul$n in
November, r9o8, when he was driven into exile during the period of reaction u'hich
followed the destruction of the Persian Majtis and Constitution by Mubammad,Alí Sháh and his Russian aiders and abettors in the preceding summer; and was
bought from him by me for dt5, a small price for so excellent a book. It comprises
the Iollowi ng 2r works of 'A11ár, the list of which is given on f . 2", and the beginning
of each of which is indicated by a small tag of red cloth attached to the margin of
the initial page.(t) fàAih;ratu'l-Awliytí, oÍ "Memoirs of the Saints," the only prose work in
the collection, of which the text, edited by Dr R. A. Nicholson, was published in
my "Persian Flistorical Texts" Series in two volumes in I9o5 and I9o7' This
occupies ff. zb-t4zb of the MS.
trl -lheJawh.aru'dh-Dlzdt (tr, I43o-253b). At the end are written, in a cursive
modern handdated r3o7/r889-90, two quatrains on the mutability of life and the
transitoriness of all possessions. Beneath them is the signature " $afá '41í"'

signature appear at the end of this poem also.

The MS. comprises 9r 5 ff of 3;'5 x 20 c. and z5 11. in four columns (i.e. two baytsor verses to the line). Written throughout in a small, neat, clear Persian ta'líq of nogreat antiquity with rubrications and illuminated 'nruwdns at the beginning of eachcomponent part. No date or colophon.
The former owner of this N,iS., Zahíru's-Su11án, though of the blood royal, wasan enthusiastic supporter of the Constitution. After the coup d'état of June 23, rgo8,lre was one of those imprisoned by Muhammad 'Alí Sháh in the Bdg/t-;-S/tá/t(" King's Garden "), and it was said that his cousin the Sháh only refrained fromkilling him because his mother (the Sháh's aunt) threatened to kill herself if hepersisted in this intention. It was during his subsequent exile that he visitedCanrbridge on November zo, r9o8. See my Persian Reaolution, pp.2o4, zo8 andnote. and zo9. His father fahíru'd-Dawla, whose proper name was 'Alí Khán
Qájár, rvas Master of the Ceremonies (Wazír-i-Taslaríftít) under Ná9iru'd-DínSháh. rvith whom he was a great favourite, and who gave him his daughterFurÉghu'd-Dawla (the lady above mentioned) in marriage. He was a notable-J/urs/rt'd, or spiritual guide, and the Head of an Order of Dervishes.

A N'IS. written in a very cursive Persian ía'líq and completed in Safar rz86lMay-June, r869, of the Ma4laaru'/-'Ajá';ó of Shaykh Farídu'd-Dín'Aq1ár. It wasobtained from the Belshah collection in January, rg2o, and comprises 264 ff. of2I '3, x I5'9 c. and t6l l . (óayts) in the body of the text with rz in the margin. I tappears to contain at least two different poems. The first, br:ginning:

Mazhatw'/-'Ajd'ió," it would appear that the copyist's object was to prove that itwas really written by 'Atqár, a fact denied by the 'ulamá of Samarqand, who causedit to be publicly burned as spurious and heretical in the beginning of Rajab 88ziOct. 9, 1477, and that similar Shí'a tendencies are to be found in other poems by'At!ár. Presumably some of the citations given are from these, for the contents ofthe volume seem too extensive to represent only this one poem. On f. z63h anumber of citations from various poets are given to show how highly 'Aqgár wasesteemed by such men as Shaykh MahmÍd Shabistarí, Jám|, Kátibí of Níshápír,and Jalálu'd-Dín Rrímí.

A fine old MS. (incomplete at end and undated, but apparently of the r4thcentury of the Christian era) of the Díwtín of Kamálu'd-Dín Ismá'íl of lqfahán, forwhose death dates ranging between 6z811230-r and 63gfr24r-2 are given bydifferent authorities, though Dawlatsháh and most other historians and biographerssay that he perished in the massacre made by the Mongols in 635/1 237-8. SeeRieu's Persian Cat., pp. 58o-58r, and my Líterary Í{istor of Persia, vol. rr,pp. 540-542, etc. A list of his chief patrons is given in both places. Others towhom poems are addressed in this volume include:

The " Fragments " (Muqatta'tÍt) occupy ff. ÍT7"-242b, and include panegyricson Zaynu'd-Dín as-Suhrawardí (f. zr6b) and the Amír Násiru'd-Dín al-Mankalí(f. z r 8"). The Odes (Gltazalzyyót), not arranged in alphabetical order and containingno taÉka//u:I, occupy ff. z4zb-27 5b, and the Quatrains (Raóó.'iyyd.t) the remainder ofthe volume.
The MS., acquired from the Belshah collection in January, rg2o, compriseszgo ff. of z4'z x 16'9 c. and z4ll., and is written in a clear but ungraceful old nasÉlzrvith rubrications. The spelling as rvell as the writing is archaic. To the initialqasídas, which are in praise of God, is prefixed, instead of the Bisnei'/ldh, thei l luminated heading:

Nicholson's Selected Odes from that Díwdn(Cambridge, I898), which contains a full and excellent critical study of the wholesubject; and my Lit. Í{ist. of Persia, vol. rr, pp. 515-525, etc.
This MS., acquired from the Belshah collection in January, rg2o, comprisest,z6 f{. of 33'8 x zt '8 c. and 3r l l . , is writ ten in a small and legible, but ungracefulta'líq, and was completed by " the least of physicians " Mírzá Muhammad 'A1í ofTihrán on the zrst of ShawwáI, rzSzfMarch 9, r866. The volume cannot containmuch ferver than 49,ooo verses (óayts).

A neat and compactly written MS. of the celebrated Mathnazuí of Jalálu'd-DínRurní, given to me on Apri l 26, tgo3, by the late Sir Mark Sykes, rvho bought i tin Svr ia .

body of the page and rz in the margin, and is written in a good and legible ta'líqg.ith rubrications. It is unclated, but the copyist gives his name as Shaykh

Quaritch about r883. It comprises Í76 f{. of zo x 14 c. and z7 11., and is writ ten ina legible but ungraceful Turkishta'/íg with rubrications, the Persian text also beingoverlined with red. It was copied by one Ahmad ibn Bá1í and completed in JumádàI I , ro65/Apr i l -May, r655.

A neat little manuscript of the " Fragments" (Muqatta'tít) of Amír MahmÉd íbnYamíni'd-Dín (d. Z6glr 167-8), commonly called lbn-i-Yamín, a notable poet of theSarbadárí court. His father, Amír Yamínu'd-Dín, settled at Farytïmad in the reignof the Mcrngol Khudá-banda, and died in 7z4fr3z4. See my Persian Literatureunder Tartar Doneinion, pp. 2 r r-222. An edition of the " Fragments " (but muchless extensive than this MS.) was printed at Calcutta in 1865, and a Germanverse-rendering of many of them by Schlechta-Wssehrd was published at Viennai n r 8 5 2 .

This f ine MS,, which was given to me in August, r9o9,by Dr Ridá Tawfíq(Ri7á Tevfíq), was made in Tabríz by Khuggí of Shírwán, and was completed onthe 9th of Dhu'l-$i j ja,873lJune zo, 1469. It appears from an Arabic dedicationwritten in gold in a fine large nasÉ.h. on ff. rb-2" that it was made for the library ofthe Sultán Abt Nasr $asan Bahádur Khán, on whom a whole page of high-soundingtitles are bestowed. This section presents a somewhat curious chronological puzzle, for while, as we
have seen, the poem was composed in ZSSlr357 for Sul$n Uways, this manuscript
was wri t ten for Abí Nasr $asan Beg Bahádur Khán in 87311469. How, then,
can mention of the latteroccur in a poemwritten more than a centuÍy earlier? His
name occurs only in the title of this section, not in the poem itself, so that the most
likely conjecture is that it was inserted there by the scribe to give an un\Marranted
precision to the vague prophecies ascribed to Nagíru'd-Dín físí.

A MS. of the poems of Anwarí, bought of R. D, Dickinson, 89 Farringdon
Street, E.C., for ros. 6tl. on March 3o, 1899. It should, of course, have been placed
higher in this class, since Anwarí flourished under the House of Saljriq in the twelfth

LÉL db+)A very poor Indian MS. of the Díwd.nof f láfr4, given to me on May I3, I9o3,
by *y former pupil Harináth Dè of Dacca College. It was copied in 117711764
by a certain Fatfu'llatr Át<trrina, and in March, r839, belonged to "Baboo Chunder
liarain Moostofee." I have not thought it worth while to number the leaves, which
measure 2o'5 x r3'3 c. and contain r3 11. each of poor ta'líg writing.
Ji:1:_,'lhe DíwtÍn of a poetessl using the pen-name (taklaallws) of Jahán, who was
contemporary with Sháh Shujá' the MuEaffarl, and is probably identical with the
Jahán-Khátrin satirized by 'lJbayd-i-Zákání. See my Persian Literatwre wnder
Taríar Donoinion, p. 233, n. I.The MS., appaiently bought by me in Constantinople, since I have marked it
in pencil " zo piastres," comprises 38 fí. of t4'g x Io'4 c. and 15 11., and is written
in a small, r,""i ta'líg with rubrications. In the colophon the month of completion
is given as Dhu'l-F.Iijja, but the year is almost obliterated, though it looks most like
roz8 (this would be equivalent to Nov.-Dec., r6t9).
The poems are for the most part ghazals, with a few muqatta'tít (fragments) and
rubA,iyyàt (quatrains) ar the end. Prefixed to them is a prose preface celebrating
the virlues and titles of Jalálu'd-Dín Abu'l-Fawáris Sháh Shujá'. The poems are
as usual arranged in alphabetical order of the final letter, except the first three, of
which the first, in praise of God, begins:

This MS., bought of J. j. l{aaman in August, r9or, comprises 268 ff. of16'3 x rz c. and 15ll., is written in a clear and beautiful nasta'lítJ between marginsruled in gold, and was copied by Muhammad ibn Mul.rammad ibn Khurram-Pír ofGílán, rvho completed it at the end of Ramadán, 86r/Aug. 21, r4s7. Theglzazalscxrend to {. zo4b, and are followed by a tarjí'bancl (ff. zo4b-zog"), after which cornesornc poems in Turkish and in a Persian dialect (probably that of Gílán), fragments,quatrains, etc., ending oní. zz7b. Preface in rvhich the author gives his full name as "'Alí ibn Nasír ibn HárLin ibnAbi'l-Qásim al-flusayní at-^tabrízí, commonly known as Qásimí," which latter pen-name he uses alternatively with Qásim. The title of the poem is given in thefol lowing verse (f. 295", l . 7):
