Of particular note in this family is the bond that ties the Black and White Russians to the Mudslide. Could Bailey's be substituted for the cream in any of these Trios? It certainly looks that way.

Definition: Duos are composed of two ingredients, usually a base spirit and a liqueur, and are normally served in an old-fashioned glass.

Definition: Trios are Duos to which cream or a cream liqueur has been added.

Note: Not all Duos can be made into Trios. Not all Trios start out as Duos.

The similarities between the first five drinks here are obvious, but you should also pay attention to the following two, and to the band of three that follow them. The Caricature Cocktail makes a bridge for liqueurs to be introduced to this family, and the remaining drinks omit any fruit juices but remain fairly closely bound.

Definition: French-Italian drinks contain a distilled spirit and sweet or dry vermouth, sometimes both. They can be modified by other ingredients.

You should pay attention to a number of aspects in these formulas. Note the relationship between the Paddy Cocktail and the Blackthorne; the Bobby Burns and the Preakness; and the Remember the Maine and Blood and Sand. Also of note here are the similarities between Deadly Sin, created by a Spanish cocktailian, and the Millennium Manhatten, a creation of Mardee's and mine. Both drinks were conceived independently, but we all went in the same direction. The same thing happened with the Black Feather and the CEO Cocktails, the first created by Robert Hess, the second by Dr. Cocktail.

This is, by definition, a simple family of drinks, and most of these formulas are obvious from the name of the drink. Note the lime juice in both the Gin Rickey and the Cuba Libre; it can be incorporated by squeezing extra wedges into the glass or by the addition of fresh juice, but it's an intergral part of both drinks.

Definition: Highballs are built in highball glasses; they call for a base spirit and a mixer, such as soda or water.
