• A third dimension to a two-dimensional
conversation
• No silver bullet –we are dealing with
dynamics and a fluid situation
• Point-of-care technology, changing and
evolving

Heading – Ariel 40
• Access to clinical / medical applications http://www.imedicalapps.com/2012/06/top-free-ipad-medical-apps/
• Familiarity with form-factor and interface
• Sense of independence and ubiquitous access
• Promise of lower organizational cost and higher provider satisfaction
• May improve clinical outcomes
• Perception of innovation and progress
• It’s what the providers want!
4
WHY?
Heading – Ariel 40
• Retina displays, camera, voice recognition
• Bluetooth 4.0 enables providers to access
directly data from Bluetooth-enabled
medical home monitoring devices “Bluetooth data collection sensor devices on the body
can gather heart rate, temperature, pulse rate, weight,
glucose levels, etc. and transmit that data directly to the
iPads when the patient is in the healthcare facility, or to
a Web portal that is monitored by the healthcare
provider when the patient is at home”

Improve Productivity

Heading – Ariel 40
• Eliminate data entry errors “You’re not counting on a busy, multitasking healthcare
professional to accurately remember and transcribe the
information onto paper or key it in manually”
• Automate upload of data to electronic
health record (EHR) or to personal health
record (PHR)
• Empower consumers as well; diabetes or
cardiac monitoring

The right combination of ease of use,
size, portability, long-lasting battery
power and relatively low cost of
adoption

It Just Makes Sense!
Heading Ariel 40
• Eases transition from
paper - can be carried
like a traditional chart
• Liberated from a fixed
computer device
• Some EHR providers
developing
exclusively for this
form factor

2012 HIMSS Leadership Survey,
comprised of responses from 302 HIT
executives, reported that 18% said that
mobile devices were the top
infrastructure priority - just behind
server virtualization, which came in first
at 19%

Predicting Technology is Challenging
Heading – Ariel 40
• History teaches that predictions about
technology are not completely reliable
• Having a track record of accomplishments,
or being labeled smart or successful is not
enough
• IT leaders are embracing changes unlike
any we have faced before

by-product of preparation

So What is the Point?
17
Seek First to Understand
Heading – Ariel 40
• “Should the burden lie with regulations to
support a consumer tool, or should the
tools evolve to meet the requirements of
these important legislative developments?” http://www.healthcare-informatics.com/blogs/gabriel-perna/curious-case-ipads-healthcare
• Physicians are bringing devices into the
care delivery space, forcing organizations
to address regulatory and operational
concerns
18
Consumerism
Heading – Ariel 40
In regard to vendor claims that a technology
or service is HIPAA-compliant
“HIPAA compliance is only achieved by
the provider, through a combination of
well-enforced employee policies and the
application of technology to help carry out
those policies”

20
Inverse Relationship?
Heading – Ariel 40
• Forrester conducted research encompassing 7,000 IT executives and workers across North America and Europe
39% worried about a lack of data leak prevention on mobile devices
30% feel there is insufficient separation between consumer and corporate data on mobile devices
25% do not use any form of data protection (PIN or password)
21
Challenges
http://www.pcworld.com/article/2010527/forrester-report-finds-most-data-breaches-are-caused-by-
employees.html
Heading – Ariel 40
• Most organizations formulate policies for securing mobile devices, but, paradoxically, lack enough tools to enforce them
• It’s not simply a matter of having the appropriate tools and controls in place. Only 56% of information workers in North America and Europe say that they are aware of their organizations’ current security policies
22
Challenges
http://www.pcworld.com/article/2010527/forrester-report-finds-most-data-breaches-are-caused-by-
employees.html
Heading – Ariel 40
• Difficulty tracking devices on an organization’s network - how to know when unauthorized devices are trying to log on
• Use of cameras (think telemedicine – a great option for rural areas and advancement of ACO models)
• Devices are already being used (ready or not)

Challenges / Limitations
24
Closing Thoughts
Heading – Ariel 40
• If mHealth is not part of your IT strategy,
you don’t have an IT strategy
• Pressure to adopt is both internal and
external - it is essential to be nimble and
flexible
• There are significant risks - technology is
evolving faster than controls
• Have a plan, execute to plan, monitor
