In May 2016 the Crossway Foundation and Art Jameel invited six photographers from, or connected to, the Gulf region to Turkey to meet and collaborate with local photographers and arts initiatives in Istanbul, Cappadocia and Ankara and to explore the theme of “migration.” The theme was interpreted literally by some of the artists, thinking about moving bodies from place to place, while others remix their own cultures and backgrounds to produce new visual languages. At the end of their time in Turkey, the participants worked with Ankara-based collective Ka Atölye to determine the narrative and selection of photographs featured in this publication. By focusing on the processes and gestures of movement as they relate to migration, the artists have used their observations of Turkey to weave together narratives that offer new responses to the theme.
