Annual Meeting | October 19–22, 2017 | Kansas City, MO | 3

The preconference sessions are extra-fee events. Please see box D on the registration form for informa-tion about fees.

Thursday, October 198 am–NoonThe Art of Uncertainty: Unlocking Its Tools for Diagnosis and Teaching in Visual Arts Experiences (001)Alexa Miller, MA, Arts Practica, Guilford, CT

Beliefs about uncertainty influence diagnostic performance and healthcare delivery. For example, one physician may hide uncer-tainty, whereas another may acknowledge it as a way to leverage learning and communication. Contrary to popular belief and practice, the latter strategy has been shown to improve efficiency and reduce the risk of lawsuits. This workshop proposes one way to jumpstart new ways of thinking about clinical uncertainty and its management through up-close encounters with great works of art and reflective thinking at the Nelson Atkins Museum. The workshop includes an immersive experience in the galleries.

8 am–NoonFacilitation and Conflict-Resolution Skills for Ethics Consultants (002)Haavi Morreim, JD PhD, University of Tennessee College of Medicine, Memphis, TN

This workshop teaches skills for clinical conflict resolution rang-ing from negotiation to facilitation to assisted negotiation and mediation. Practice scenarios are interwoven with description and discussion of a key tool set including managing expectations, normalizing, active listening, verbal mirroring, and affect labeling. Participants come to recognize the critical role played by trust in all conflict resolution and learn techniques to build trust and thereby enable those in conflict to come to their own workable agreements. Everyone will participate in all practice exercises and extensive debriefing.

8 am–NoonAdvanced Facilitation Skills for Clinical Ethics Consultation (003)Autumn Fiester, PhD, University of Pennsylvania Center for Bioethics, Philadelphia, PA

Edward Bergman, JD, University of Pennsylvania Center for Bioethics, Philadelphia, PA

Building on a foundation in basic facilitation skills, this workshop teaches skills for effectively conducting complex multiparty, emotionally charged meetings with diverse stakeholders. Through a combination of didactic presentations, question-and-response activities, and role plays, this session addresses the process of diagnostic listening; effective analysis and mirroring of individual concerns, values, and perspectives; and techniques for amplifying silent or weaker voices. Careful attention will be paid to the issue of values imposition and how to avoid it in consultation.

8 am–NoonOpening the “Black Box” of Ethical Analysis: Generating, Translating, and Strengthening Ethical Arguments and Counterarguments to Improve Ethics Consultation Quality (004)David Alfandre, MD MSPH, National Center for Ethics in Health Care, Washington, DC

Kenneth Berkowitz, MD FCCP, New York University School of Medicine, New York, NY

Barbara Chanko, MBA RN, National Center for Ethics in Health Care, Washington, DC

Lisa Lehmann, MD PhD MSc, National Center for Ethics in Health Care, Washington, DC

This session aims to demystify what is often called the black box of ethical analysis by teaching and demonstrating how to con-struct, translate, and strengthen ethical arguments and counter-arguments as part of an ethics consultation. Participants will work in small and large groups to apply the ethical analysis framework and practice generating compelling and nuanced ethical argu-ments and counterarguments; categorize an ethical analysis as credo, consequence, or comparison and identify arguments based on faulty reasoning; and strengthen ethical arguments to make them more compelling, with specific attention to each of the three standard rationales.

Safe Dilemmas: Visual Art and the Cultivation of the Medical Mind

Alexa Miller, MA, Arts Practica, Guilford, CT

Patient safety experts say that overconfidence significantly endangers clinical judgment and healthcare delivery. How can clinicians learn to better recognize the limits of their knowledge, the subjectivity of their views, and the value of others’

unique intelligences? Alexa Miller proposes an unusual approach—visual art—and provides a framework for understanding its educa-tional relationship to the core clinical challenge of navigating clinical uncertainty. Drawing from research on patient safety and on arts and human development, she shares a selection of great works of art, pearls of wisdom gleaned from them, and relevant medical cases.

The Nuremberg Doctors’ Trial and the Birth of Bioethics: 70 Years Later

George J. Annas, JD MPH, Boston University, Boston, MA

The Doctors’ Trial at Nuremberg (1946–1947) was remarkable primarily because physicians accused of wholesale murder and torture de-fended their actions as consistent with medical ethics. Other birthdates for bioethics have been

suggested, but it seems reasonable that the Doctors’ Trial marks the birth of American bioethics, if not all contemporary medical ethics. Seven decades later, George Annas assesses the impact of the trial on both human-rights law and bioethics, especially on the doctrine of informed consent and the ethics of human experimen-tation.
