Edinburgh Napier University working in partnership with the creative industriesIn the School of Arts & Creative Industries, our BA (Hons) Journalism course prepares students for diverse careers by providing innovative and theoretical training across a wide area of journalistic and media mediums.

Students studying on this programme possess up to date creative, organisational and communicative skills.

In their second and third years, our students are required to complete a work placement to develop these skills and consolidate their learning by actively applying their skills in a work environment.

Work placements offer great benefits to both students and employers and provide the opportunity for knowledge exchange and positive collaboration.

Skills

In their 2nd and 3rd year our BA (Hons) Journalism students have excellent verbal and written communication, team-work and organisational skills gained from their studies and group projects.

In addition to this;

• Aware and able to analyse and review the political, environmental and economic factors which affect the current media landscape.

• A rigorous and conscientious attitude, covering stories fairly, truthfully and with integrity, working within Professional codes of behaviour, supported by their own moral and ethical codes.

• Accountable and responsible, yet innovative and capable of pushing creative boundaries to come up with dynamic solutions.

• A strategic decision-maker, able to respond to the needs of different stakeholders from business, government to news audiences.

• A creative leader, engaging with the current debate on the future of journalism, offering adventurous alternatives, and enabling change through creative practice.

Academic Support

Students receive academic support throughout specifically tailored to enable them to be work ready. They will receive guidance on presentation skills and be supported in developing professional attitudes and working practices. t

Recruitment

The placement team in the School of Arts & Creative Industries will be happy to discuss and support all aspects of recruiting/appointing a work placement student. We can liaise over job descriptions, advertise opportunities, collate CV’s, applications and portfolios as well as assist in arranging interviews, circulating feedback etc.

We can also provide guidance on placement agreements and health and safety.

Timings

Our students are available for part-time work placements throughout the Academic year (September to May) and for full-time positions in the summer.
