Why did you choose medicine as a profession?I grew up observing my father’s selfless compassion for his obgyn patients. I never heard him grumble when he suddenly had to rush away to go deliver a baby, even if untimely. In my teenage years, I was permitted to join him in the delivery room. Each time, I was very moved at the utter wonder of the beginnings of life, and how precious it really is. While in high school I worked in my dad’s office, and listened carefully to how he and his partners treated employees, one another and their patients. Often there was unspeakable hardship and multiple layers of complex healthcare issues. Yet, their message was always of a compassionate treatment plan, and one of hope. When I was 8 years old, my mother developed Multiple Sclerosis, which over time waxed and waned. For a period of time she had left-sided paralysis, while at other times lost her vision or had diplopia. Despite all these issues, she stayed cheerful and resilient and very helpful to my three brothers and me, as a strong mother of great courage. She did nothing to deserve this fate, yet I found myself being driven more and more toward the idea of caretaker. The opportunity arose when I was 16 years old, to apply to what was at the time, a new innovative six-year medical school where students arrived straight out of high school, and completed a combined BA and MD. They accepted me, I started medical school at the age of 17, and loved the wonder of the human body throughout my studies.

What is the best advice you ever received?Life will go by quickly. Don’t fight with others. Pray for your enemies. Seek those people who bring loving happiness to those around them. If you make a mistake, let it go and keep seeking joy and happiness anyway. Never stop being a good parent. Don’t dedicate your life to accumulating wealth, as it’s not the most important consideration. Guard your character. It’s your most important attribute. Enjoy your journey here on earth, for here is a place of learning. We are all here in the same school of life. Eat off the fine china, wear your favorite perfume. Pray now instead of later. Call that person now instead of later. Love more intensely, forgive everyone, embrace others more, and leave all things in the hands of God.

If you won the lottery, what would your first purchase be? There are a number of free medical clinics here in Oklahoma. I would donate to each, then head over to Mercy Ships in West Africa, and spend the rest of my time helping the forgotten poor over there while living aboard ship. If there were leftover dollars, I’d contribute to national wildlife refuges in need. These are forgotten places of amazing beauty and wildlife, which are receiving less and less funding over time.

Favorite vacation location?Spending time with my cousins in Basel, Switzerland. Beautiful hiking, mountains, amazing cheese, dark chocolate, and laughter among people whom I love. We are separated by the ocean, yet intertwined genetically. We are culturally different, yet have much in common.

If you weren’t practicing medicine, what do you think would you be doing professionally?Ministry. Either locally, abroad, or both. Somehow I would seek mercy and kindness towards others. Help the broken get to where they have another chance at life. Be in the business of helping others, with the goal of restoration of mind and spirit. Sometimes we can lose sight of the light ahead, when we are in the midst of dark times.
