POST GAME QUOTESPITTSBURGH STEELERS vs. DENVER BRONCOS
Sunday, December 7, 1997 — Three Rivers Stadium (59,600), Pittsburgh, Pa.
STEELERS QUOTES
HEAD COACH BILL COWILER: "It was certainly our most complete game of the year. It was anauspicious start. The one thing about this football team is, we've been in enough close ones and we've beendown before, that there's a great will. We played a very good football team and made plays in the second halfwhen wehad to and I think that's the bottom line.
Re: Failing behind early: "I think we understand it's a 60 minute game. Yeah, you'd like to start off quick andfast, but at the same time if you don't, there's no game that has yet been decided by halftime. We got a couplevery big pass plays early in the game to Yancey (Thigpen) which certainly allowed us to get back into the game.We kept throwing (Jerome) Bettis into the game. I thought we settled down defensively after that first quarter.
Charles Johnson did a great job in motion picking up Steve Atwater: "It was by design. We knew we were goingto get the eight-man front and you have to find a way to find that. C.J. (Charles Johnson) does a great job withthat. He doesn't get enough credit because that's not an easy thing to do. You have to get a feel -- sometimes youhave go inside to tackle, sometimes you have to go outside to tackle. You've got to find him. Give our coachessome credit. We've got a pretty good understanding of the running game around here, based on how you have totry to scheme eight-man fronts, nine-man fronts sometimes. We had nine-man fronts last week.
Were you going away from Atwater? "No. We went to him a couple times. We had our base running package,we just to adapt it to what we Were going to face this week.
Did you settle on a secondary? 'We'll see.
Were you satisfied with it today? "Yeah, I was satisfied the last three quarters.
Why Chad Scott in ulace of Donnell Woolford? "We thought it would be the best matchup for this week.... Wedid what we thought we had to do to win the football game. We will continue to make decisions with personnelweek to week because we think that gives us the best chance of winning.
Why did you in the defensive huddle? "Ijust thought it was important. They hit a lot of big plays. That's thething that you don't want to get down. It's not like they were running the ball and methodically moving it up anddown the field. They hit a couple big plays. We just had to settle down and. make them earn everything. Ithought we were able to do that from the second quarter on.
Did you change your defensive scheme? "I don't think we did. We may have gone away from a couple defensesthat certainly didn't look too good in the first quarter. We still had to get back. We had to put some pressure onthem. We ended up getting some pretty good pressure when we needed it. We mixed it up. A couple of thefourth down calls I had were based on #7 being on the other sideline. I've been in that division and I'm glad Idon't have to see him twice a year. It was important for us to control the football.
You had a couple tough calls on the last drive: "Yeah, them were. They were calls that could have gone eitherway. But that's part of that business, You've got to find ways of keeping them out of the endzone. That's thebottom line, if you can play good redzone defense and hold people to field goals, you're going to win a lot offootball games.
How did Kordell Stewart play today? "I thought he threw the ball very accurately. I thought he made very gooddecisions. He's not going to get intimidated by a big game. if he played poorly today, it would have had nothingto do with the fact that it's a big He loves the challenge. He did play very efficiently today and we hadsome very good performances around him.
Is playing that well against a good team a defining moment? "There's nothing defining until you get to the end ofJanuary. I really believe that. This win won't mean a thing if we don't continue to do what we have to do weekin and week out. We are not looking any further ahead than New England next Saturday. That's the bottom line."
RB JEROME BETTIS: "I knew it was going to be rough. I knew that they would come out and make aconcerted effort to stop the run. I just took it upon myself to, once I got hit, not to stop my feet because weneeded every single yard we could get out there.
Did you watch TentH Davis? "You're always going to do that. When you see a guy that you're chasing, youalways want to look at him and see what he's doing. I like Terrell Davis as a person and as a running back, he'sincredible. So whenever you can get an opportunity to see one of the guys in the league that's exceptional, youwant to take a peek at him.
Re: Steelers run defense: "I wouldn't want to run against this defense. This is a hard defense to run against. They went out and proved it today.
How would you tackle yourself? "My first thought is to go low, but then I say to myself, 'you'd probably haveto go high,' but I'd probably run myself over."
(over)
LB LEVON KIRKLAND: "They got some big plays on us in the first half, definitely. They got some longpasses on us, but our offense did a great job of coming back for us. Once they got to coming back, we just wentafter them. We got aggressive. We went after Terrell Davis, went after John Elway, and played a tremendousgame.Does this make a statement? "Yeah. You have to make a statement. You are either going to get pushed around oryou are going to push somebody else around. We decided to do that in the second half, We got after them a littlebit. They're a good team, you've got to give them credit, but we're a good team also."
C DERMONTTI DAWSON: Was this your best game of the year? "Overall, yeah. We were moreconsistent. That's what we've been shooting for. We were down again, 21-7, kind of dug our way out andmaintained throughout the game. I would say this is the most complete game of the year."
WR YANCEY THIGPEN: Is this the biggest day you've ever had emotionally? "This was a big one. Werealized that we needed a victory today and I was a big part of that. It was a great day. I'm going to go outtonight and celebrate, but tomorrow it will be all over with and the focus will be on New England.
Re: defense feeding offense: "One phase feeds off the other. The defense felt like we did, that we were going togo out and fight to win the ballgame. They stepped up. They feed off enthusiasm and once they get into thebailgame, it's tough to play against them."
DE KEVIN HENRY: Re: defensive first half troubles: 'We weren't getting any pressure up the middle. Ijusttried to do the next best thing --jump up in the air and try to knock some passes down. I think that's just as goodas a sack."
OL WILL WOLFORD: Is this as nice as having one of your horses win the Kentucky Derky7 "Let's not gothat far. A Derby winner is 60,000 to 1. I don't know about that. It was a great game. We've been able to comefrom behind against some good teams. Today we came from behind against, supposedly, the best team in theAFC.
Re: use of shovel gasses: "We've always had those plays in. It's just a matter of whether they get called or not.I know the one big play in the fourth quarter where we went for it on fourth down was a shovel pass. George(Jones) got caught up and Kordell (Stewart) wound up taking off with it. Kordell may be the fastest guy on thefield. If he is, let's take advantage of it. When we can do that, he's a big time player."
ES DARREN PERRY: "Early on, we weren't playing our style of defense. Towards the end of the secondquarter, and all of the second half, we came out and did the things that we do best. That's mixing it up, puttingpressure on him (John Elway) and just getting after it."
SS MYRON BELL: Did you change anything defensively? "We stuck with the game plan. Everybody justdid their part. I know we buckled down and it came together. The plays that they got on us in the first half weremistakes on our part. We corrected the mistakes and came back and played a pretty good game."
DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR JIM HASLETT: 'We started off struggling a little bit. We knew this wasa quarterback that's going to the Hall of Fame, and a great quarterback. The thing that we didn't want to do wasgive up some big plays. We did it early and then we got our composure back. The drive in the second half, where they got the field goal, he (Elway) made some fantastic throws. Our game plan going in, which is weirdwhen you play a team like this, was to stop the run. The number one thing we wanted to do was take away theirrunning game and make Elway beat us. Usually when you play a quarterback like that, you don't say that.
"Our secondary did a great job. We need to eliminate some of the bigger plays. But we hung in there and we dida good job with the running game. We mixed our coverages and tried to give our guys a chance to win. Westruggled a little bit early, but I haven't seen anyone that's been able to stop this team. I've looked at every singlegame they played. They are averaging 375 yards a game and 30 points a game on offense. No one has reallyslowed them down. I thought in the second half we were the first team to do it."
NT JOEL STEED: What was the key to containing Terrell Davis? "We did a few different stunts up front andI was able to control some things that allowed Levon (Kirkland) and Earl (Holmes) to make good reads. Also, when you play against a great back, you've got to step it up a notch and we did.
During a successful season, there are always one or two defining games. Is this one of them? "Most definitely.A lot of people considered Denver to be the top team in the AFC and maybe the NFL. We proved today that webelong, but we've got to prove it again next week."
LB EARL HOLMES: This had to be the game that you've played in as a starter: "Absolutely. It washuge. The crowd, the intensity, everybody on the defense was telling me this was like a playoff game. And Iloved it!
Not only did you shut down Terrell Davis. but you seemed to hurry John Elway and the receivers dronoed plot ofpasses: "We had a good defensive game plan and we stuck with it, hoping that eventually things would work out.I think the receivers might have been hearing footsteps because we were popping people."

OB KORDELL STEWART:
How much did rolling out today help you in regards to Jerome Betts? It had a lot to do with it,
Jerome doing his thing. It gave us an opportunity to do some play-action, to give me the
opportunity, if not, go straight back into the pocket and to also get on the corner. And I thinkthat's what kept some drives alive, using my mobility to get out on the corner, so instead of 3M
and 10, we're and 4 and gave Courtney Hawkins a chance to catch the ball in the flat.
(Re: Charles Johnson's overall play): When C.J. was in, Yancey Thigpen had the opportunity to
catch some balls and so did C.J. With C.J. gone, it didn't do anything but slow some things
down as far as his progress was concerned because he was out (injured earlier in season). Hedidn't have the chance to play. It (C.J.'s absence) caused me to throw some balls to Yancey and
give him the chance to catch the rock. C,J.'s back now and he's catching the ball andeverybody's having an opportunity to touch the rock and that's all that matters.
(Re: 4th and 6 gutsy call'): With a game like this, you have to be gutsy, man. You have to have
confidence in your team and know that it's crunch time. You can't go out there and be passive
and try to just do things on the first, second, and third downs. To be a championship team, you
have to take chances on fourth down. Coach Cowher had confidence in us and we took
advantage of it.
(Re: Father and Brother getting network time): It's prime time, man. He's the man. He's done agreat job of being there for me when things weren't as successful as they were today. And forhim to get some air time with my brother, Robert Stewart, Jr., that was wonderful. They kept mepoised and relaxed and I had with fun with them while they were here. Having dad and family
around is really important.
(Re: Interceotion in end zone): That was, in my opinion, a good interception because you giveYancey the opportunity to catch the ball and the defender just made a great play. You can't take
anything away from the guy.
Was the call on theinterception sent in from the sidelines?: Yes, that was the call that was sent
in.
(Re: Shovel pass to Courtney Hawkins on and 6): That's a play we've had in there. Wewound up doing it from the formation we had of 5 wide receivers. I called a timeout because we
had no time left on the clock.
(Re: Nine completions in a row): It's just a matter of what you recognize as far as the defense is
concerned, Coach Galley did a great job of calling plays. We talked on the phone a few times,
trying to understand what they were doing. We made some things happen against their defense
because those guys were doing a great job disguising their defenses.

BRONCOS OUOTES
HEAD COACH MIKE SHANAHAN:
Looking at it from an offensive standpoint, I thought we made some plays. Ithought we had the momentum going early. Pittsburgh's offense really did a great
job. They kicked our rear ends all over the football field. They (Pittsburgh)
controlled the tempo of the game. They controlled the line of scrimmage and the
running game. They did a great job on the pass protection making some big playsin the passing game. They deserved to win the game, and they played extremelywell. I'm very disappointed that we had some opportunities on offense. Eventhough we made some big plays, I'm not sure how many dropped balls today, probably 8-10 drops that could have turned into big plays. We didn't make theplays that we had to make. They did, and they should be commended for it. Wedon't concern ourselves with Kansas City or whoever else is involved, but what wehave to do is play quality football. The type of football we played today will notget us very far. We have to regroup in all three phases and come outMondaynight against San Francisco and play like we're capable of playing.
(Comments on Terrell Davis' performance) We don't look at one person to be afactor. We look at trying to put points on the scoreboard. I believe going into thelast drive with 1:20 left, we only had the ball three times.
(Comments on the 69-yard touchdown pass to Yancey Thigpen, turning point ingame) It's not putting someone away. Actually, they put us away. Theycontrolled the line of scrimmage. They ran the football and threw the football. Some games you get way ahead and a team is able to get close. This team(Pittsburgh) dominated the football game from the second quarter on especially onthe offensive side of the football. Defensively, we went against a fine footballteam. When a team is able to gain over 500 yards on offense, there is not oneturning point.
OB John Blwav:
(Comments on today's game) In the second half we didn't make the plays. Youhave to make some big plays and stay on the field. We didn't do that. When theygot on the field, they did a good job of keeping us off.
(Comments on the Broncos' running game) We knew coming in they were goodagainst the rush. I was getting good time of throwing the ball. We did a good jobpicking up the things that they were doing up front. If we would have made someplays in the passing game, I think it would have been a different story.
(How does this effect your team mentally?) We have to finish out and get back ontrack. Today was a good, old fashion butt whipping and today we were on thewrong end. We've got to finish strong with the next two and we're in the playoffs. If Kansas City slips then we still have a chance to get home field. Chances arethey're not. We have to get ready for the playoffs and planning on taking the longroad.
(Comments on getting an early lead) They came back and made some plays. Weknew we were going to have to play the whole game, and at 21-7 the game wasn'tover. They made some plays after that and we didn't.
(Did the weather play a factor in the dropped passes?) I don't know. You'll haveto ask those guys. I was on the other end.
(over)
(Comments on pass protection) We did a good job up front with all the differentthings that they do. We did a good job picking things up. They had a couple guysget free, but overall, the protection was great all day.;
(Comments on kordell Stewart) He had a great day. He threw the ball well andran the ball. He's a good athlete and is just going to get better and better withexperience.
(How do you regroup being the leader of this team?) I think that hopefully thisbrings everybody back down to earth and we can realize that we have to go outand play well especially on the road against a good football team. We can't go outand play like we did today and expect to win. Hopefully this will give us a wake-up call, and we have to go to San Francisco which is another tough place to play.Hopefully we can get back on track.
(Will this game shake this team's confidence?) No. I think that if anythingeverybody has to look at themselves and figure out for us to get where we have togo, we have to play better than we did today. We're still 11-3. With Kansas Citydoing what they're doing, I think it makes the impact a little greater, this loss, thanit would normally. We have two left, We have to finish strong and hopefully geton a roil so when we get to the playoffs, we'll be ready to go.
