We Had a Fabulous Time at the Gala

Independence Day Celebration atthe U.S. Consulate

Were less than one month away fromthe AmSocs United States IndependenceDay Celebration on Saturday June 29th.We are celebrating a few days before the

4th since it falls this year on a Thursday.We want to especially thank DennisHankins, our Consul General in SoPaulo, and proudly acknowledge that theAmerican Consulate will once again co-host this event with the American Society.The event will take place at the Consulatein the sporting area which is a beautifuland spacious area.

The gates will open at 2:30PM at theentrance on the R. Henri Dunant side.Our opening ceremonies will include

the Marine Color Guard, the Presidentsmessage, a general welcome to us all

and a presentation of donation checks toProjeto Sol and SPACE.

A typical picnic lunch will be servedcomplete with our traditional BBQ, hot

dogs, hamburgers, xings, and YOURhomemade salads and desserts. The U.S.Marines will be serving beer and theirwicked Caipirinhas to help cover the costof their annual Marine Ball held everyNovember in So Paulo.

Well be entertained by the RocknRollband, Hideaway Cats. They have afabulous array of songs that appeal toevery foot stomping person. Curumimparty organizers will again host thechildrens activities with monitors and

face painters as well.Heres what you

That seemed to be the generalconsensus of all the 330 plus guests atthe event. After 3 months of planningand working to get things right, thanks

to the committee headed by MarleneRubeiz, Chairman and her co-chairmenJudy Zanchi and Julie Gattaz, theevening was a huge success. The BuffetColonial looked like a fairyland thanksto the magic wand of Aline Ricardo andRuth Hollard and all of their decoratorelves who turned the hall into an elegant

but cosy space. Even though trafc waschallenging that evening there was plentyof time to bid on the silent auction itemswhich offered something for everyone -

spectacular jewelry, dinners from the bestrestaurants, original art works, hotel stays,spas, massages, photography shoots,bicycles, sporting equipment, airlinetickets and much, much more. And bid,they did. The bidding closed at 9:30, so

that dinner could be served.Just a word about the hors doeuvres

DELICIOUS and far from boring fromgnochi with shrimp, to grilled octopus, to

lichee with brie, to gaspacho, to avocadosoup with caviar. The fare was denitelya step above your usual cocktail snacks.Dinner was equally appealing withgrilled robalo, let mignon, stroganoff,risottos, salads and lots of veggies.The dessert table - besides all kinds ofice creams - offered 8 different tarts:chocolate, maracuja, coconut to namesome favorites.

Everyone enjoyed watching ourauctioneer, Woody Dunstan, persuade

bidders to go higher and higher. Andwhy not, it was all for fun and a goodcause. A hotel in Aspen, two AmericanAirline tickets to Miami with hotel, aprivate home in Campos do Jordo, twoDelta executive class

On May 10th we held our 2013Annual Gala, and while nancials are notfully tallied, this year was undoubtedlyour best in many years in terms of

money raised for charity. Projeto Soland Space will benet from the verysuccessful live and silent auctionproceeds, as well as the ever-importantCorporate contributions. Thank you toall the sponsors and contributors of art,air travel and resort stays, jewelry, andrestaurants, and to Jason Berminghamand Woody Dunstan as MC andauctioneer and for all the hard work bythe Event Planning Committee and allthe fantastic helpers.

On June 29th we will have our annual

4th of July picnic at the American

Consulate. Well have a BBQ, drinks,desserts and games, all caped offwith reworks after sunset. Registeryourself and family now to ensure youmake this fun event and experienceone of the greatest American traditionsright here in the heart of Sao Paulo.

We will also be having our monthlyhappy hours information to comevia e-mail and our website. Mostimportantly, we will continue to

make a difference in our communitythrough nancial, supply and clothingdonations to the wonderful charitableorganizations we support throughoutthe city.

Each of these orphanages andcommunity centers were selected aftera thorough review of their programsand quality of management.

The support from The AmericanSociety is critical and each of uscan also contribute contact our

Community Action Committee throughthe AMSOC ofce to nd out how youcan help.

Finally, winter is approaching whichmeans summer vacation in the USAand the exodus of children and parentsonce school is out. Our best wishesfor a great vacation and well see yousoon. For those who will stay in thecity well see you at the next happyhour and other exciting events.

Consulate Corner: What Do I Do I My Passport Is

Lost, Stolen, or Damaged?

Hopefully you will never have yourpassport stolen, lost, or mistakenlydamaged -- but, in truth, it can happento any of us. My husband is notoriousfor washing his passport and I have lostone myself. Here are some tips on howto get a replacement passport, just in

case.First things rst: When you get a newpassport, make copies of the bio pagewith your name and photograph and thepage with your Brazilian visa, and putthese copies in a secure location. Youcan also scan the passport to have anelectronic copy. This will ensure thatyou have all the vital information fromyour documents if it is lost or stolen.We also recommend that you do notcarry your passport with you except

when necessary.If your passport is lost or stolen,you need to le a police report withthe policia civil before you come to theU.S. Consulate General Sao Paulo fora replacement. You can le the policereport in person at a police station oronline at http://www.ssp.sp.gov.br/bo/

furtoDocumentosEntrada.aspx. Tomake an appointment with the U.S.Consulate to replace your passport,please visit our website at http://brazil.usembassy.gov/service.html.

If you need the passport replacedquickly due to immediate travel plans,

you can call the Consulate Generalat (11) 3250-5000 to arrange anemergency appointment during regularbusiness hours.

Please explain to the operator thatyou are a U.S. citizen and have anemergency. You should bring with youto the appointment the police report,a completed DS-11 (Application forU.S. Passport) and DS-64 (Statementof Lost or Stolen Passport), a 2x2 inchrecent color photograph with a white

background, a copy of your lost orstolen passport if available, and the feefor the new passport. All forms andfurther information can be found on ourwebsite http://brazil.usembassy.gov/service.html. Both parents must cometo the appointment for replacement ofa passport for a child under age 16, or

the absent parent must send a notarizedconsent authorizing the issuance of thepassport. If your passport was simplydamaged, bring it with you.

It takes about two weeks to processa replacement passport. If you aretraveling in the interim, the U.S.

Consulate can provide you with anemergency passport that is valid for sixmonths. Emergency passports shouldbe replaced with full validity passportsas soon as possible.

There is no additional fee for thefull-validity replacement passport.Visas typically cannot be placed in anemergency passport, but once you haveyour new full validity passport youshould replace any visas you may havehad.

Brazil - Ready or its Close-Up?By Ernest White II, Sta Writer

With stadiums being completed,hotel companies breaking ground onnew properties, and airport operationsunder new management, So Pauloseems abuzz with preparations for the2014 World Cup soccer championship.Since Brazil was originally awardedthe tournament in 2008, the countrysofcial representatives in governmentand FIFA, the international governing

body of professional soccer, have byand large insisted that the country of190 million will indeedbe ready to host theevent, followed by theOlympic Games in 2016.The notable exception toall the ofcial hoopla issoccer legend Pele, chosenby Brazilian PresidentDilma Rousseff to be thehonorary ambassador

for the World Cup, whohas stated on numerousoccasions that he doesntbelieve Brazil will beadequately prepared forits biggest moment on theworld stage to date.

Stadium ReadinessThat skepticism has

also extended, multiple times as well, toFIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke,who criticized the country back in 2012

with some choice words regardinga kick in the rear-end as a way ofstressing the need for meeting essentialdeadlines. As recently as May 15,Valcke even suggested that So Paulomight lose the right to host matchesduring the Cup because of delays inbuilding the stadium, Itaquero, on thecitys eastern fringe. That same threatwas withdrawn the following day, afterValcke met with perturbed ofcialsof So Paulos Corinthians Football

Club, owners of the new stadium,and received apparently acceptableassurances that the stadium would beready in time for the World Cup.

Meanwhile, the Confederations Cup,

a two-week dry run of sorts, utilizingsix of the 12 proposed stadiums, will beheld this month, from the 15th throughthe 30th. Though all six stadiums arecurrently prepared to host the event asscheduled, two of them in Brasliaand Rio de Janeiro (yes, the iconicMaracan) hadnt been completed byFIFAs April 15 cut-off date. The secondhalf of June will indeed be a bellwether

for event logistics and operations.

Increased SecurityRegarding logistics and operations

for the Confederations Cup, according

to Forbes, the Brazilian governmenthas dispatched 25,000 soldiers topatrol the countrys border with itsten neighbors, though the operationsobjectives go beyond protection ofsoccer fans to dampen drug trafcking,embezzlement, smuggling, illegalimmigration, environmental crimes,and even unlawful mining. In addition,the government has commissionedriver patrol ships, UH-12 Navalhelicopters, and hospital ships, along

with army aircraft and armoredvehicles. The Brazilian Air Forcehas also been engaged with ghterplanes, radar aircraft, and helicopterspoised for action. Brazil is also in talks

with Argentina and Paraguay aboutincreased militarization along theborders of those two countries.

And if the military werent enough,private technology rm iRobot has a$7.2 million contract with the Braziliangovernment, according to the AssociatedPress, that would mean the deploymentof about 30 unmanned robots whichwill aid in surveillance, bomb removal,

and other law enforcement activities.In the same vein, the Associated Pressalso reports that theBrazilian Air Forceinvested $25 million inthe procurement of twoIsraeli-made dronesearlier this year.

Hotel BoomWhile the armed

forces are ramping

up, accommodationsfor visitors in the city,and nationwide, areexpanding at breakneckpace. According tonumbers reported atAprils World TravelMarket Expo, heldin So Paulo, 45 newhotels are expected

to open in 2013, with another 85 in2014, adding 22,000 rooms by the timethe World Cup opens. International

hospitality chains are leading thesurge, with French hotel corporationAccor heading up the list with its mid-range Novotel and budget-priced Ibis

brands expanding throughout Brazil,followed by Hilton Hotels. MarriottInternational is also developing severalmid-priced Courtyard and FaireldInn locations throughout the country,while Wyndham plans to open 25budget-branded Super 8 hotels in aneffort to take on more expensive, but

independent, budget hotels.

AmSoc Volunteer Day Another Amazing Success!

For the second year in a row, myhusband and I participated in the annualAmerican Society Volunteer Day heldat the U.S. Consulate in Sao Paulo.The event is organized every yearby the AmSoc Communitys ActionCommittee, under the driving energyof Eileen Tasso, Lauren Negro, andBeth Konvalinka of the U.S. ConsulateCommunity Liaison ofce.

The visiting youth came from HelenDrexel, an orphanage run by RobertaLund; Projeto Sol, a communitycenter run by Sister Angela; andSPACE, an educational program runby Jane Hawkins. The funds for eachof these amazing, life-enhancingentities comes from your AmsocHelping Hands Memberships.

This year, ninety youth cameto enjoy soccer, American football,tennis, basketball, and swimming.

They also enjoyed arts and crafts andplenty of hamburgers and hot dogs anddelectable desserts to ll empty-from-playing bellies.

In my experience, the volunteershave just about as much fun as the kids,as witnessed by the same volunteersshowing up several years in a row. Itsabout getting out in the sunshine andplaying, but its also about making a

connection with the youth of Brazil. Ithink the volunteers benet from theinteraction as much as the kids do.

Volunteers and donations came fromthe U.S. Consulate, the CorinthiansSteamroller [American] Football Team(a gold-star favorite with the kids), theGuilherme Lima Instituto Muda BrazilSoccer Group, General Mills (whichdonated juice and string potatoes for

the hot dogs), the Hyatt Hotel (the

devoted cooks), Camp Juice, andSophie and Theos Cupcakes (which

were devoured with gusto by childrenand adults alike). Contact: [email protected].

Boy Scouts from the Graded Schoolkept watch in the pool area as ever-readylifeguards, an especially important task,considering that many of the kids whohopped in the pool dont know how toswim!

As I stood at the ever-extending

end of the line for lunch, I got to enjoysome young man-cubs exhibiting theirsoccer-kick prowess, as they pretendednot to know I was watching. Man, werethey good! And barefoot!

I then struck up a conversation withfour young girls shivering in their wetbathing suits as they waited for thefood. They must have thought I wasdeaf as I kept asking them to repeat their

rapid-re comments to me. I couldntunderstand them to save my soul!

Finally, we got around to namesand ages. They were 11, 12, and 9and 9. I told them I was three. Theylooked at me quizzically. Then I said13. They smiled. No. Okay, so Im53 (yes, I was still lying). Oh, thatwas a good one! I was velha (old)!And they knew another velha, Sister

Angela. (Sister later told me that theydont know a lot of old folks, because

the grandparents typically live in thecountryside, while these kids are stuckin the city.)

The kids quickly scarfed down theirlunch and zipped back to play, returningonly for dessert and then rushing offbefore they were rounded up to returnhome. But it had been another greatday of fun organized by AmSoc.

Sports

On May 4th at the Graded School inMorumbi, the American Society hostedits annual Adult Basketball Tournament.Seven teams entered with 6-10 playersplaying per team. The games, whichwere comprised of two 10 minutehalves, were of the demanding 5 on5 full court version, including league

referees calling the fouls and managingthe clock. It started shortly after 1pmwith each team playing three gamesbased on their seeding. The four bestrecords after 3 games went on to playin the semi-nals and then a nal.

Last years champions, TeamRessaca, led by AmSocs Little LeagueBasketball coach David Owens, again

played in the nals but lost to a veryathletic team made-up of players from

Clube Pinheiros who play togetherevery Thursday night. Hence thisyearswinners were a Brazilian Teamcalled Basketball na Quinta.

And due to the continued successof this event, the basketball playersare requesting that AmSoc have twobasketball tournaments per year. So beon the look-out for a second semestertournament. The results of all the gamesare shown on the right.

This Semesters Little League

This semesters Little League hasbeen a time of transition that will takea few more semesters to complete.There are two fundamental problems.First, we do not have enough childrensigning-up. Secondly, the programsthat have traditionally been offered

have provided basic training givenby parents. Thus, parents nd that theprogram might be useful for a semesteror two, while their children are young,but thereafter the kids want to move onto more structured training in a morecompetitive environment.

We are currently offering fourseparate sports to the 75 children thathave signed-up. This in itself dilutes thenumber of kids for any one sport andfor instance, although we have thirty

children signed-up for soccer with agesranging from 5 to 14, we do not have aconcentration of children in any one agegroup that would enable us to arrangea team game against an adversary (i.e.

one of the many social and sports clubsthat exist in So Paulo).

So what are we doing? First, withthe addition of the PACA to Gradedand Chapel as venues for Little Leaguewe have been able to offer a semesterwith fteen weeks of Little League,more and more consistently than wehad been able to offer in previous

semesters. Secondly, with soccer wehave enlisted the help of Assistantswho bring with them much experienceof playing football at college andamateur team levels.

The Assistants, led by CamilaKohatsu, have developed programs forthe ve to seven year olds, and one forthose older, being more competitiveand more technically ambitious. Weexpect, next semester to have theavailability of a qualied coach also.

The development of all the childrenthis year has been marked, and theirabilities to pass, defend, shoot and markhave improved out of all recognition.

We expect to continue to offer the

other sports, tennis, basketball andbaseball but perhaps offering basketballand baseball in one semester per yearonly, so that each sport can attract moreparticipants.

We would also like to consider othersports if there is the demand fromchildren and parents. Gymnastics andag football are two that have been

mooted. We will shortly be sendingout a questionnaire that will allowparents to share their goals, criticismsand ideas concerning Little League sothat the program can develop in tandemwith expectations.

Notwithstanding the period oftransition the program this year hasbeen a success, and we look forwardto our awards ceremony at Graded onJune 9th.

And as a new idea, the baseball

group will have a father-son/daughterbaseball game starting at 2pm! So allyou dads, please don`t miss this chanceto play alongside your child in our greatAmerican past-time!

congratulate Eileen Tasso, this yearswinner of the Eric Poliak Award forCommunity Service. This award is oneof the American Societys top honors,given to those who have gone aboveand beyond to helpour community andthose in need withinthe city of So Paulo.

Eileen is originallya registered nurse fromOhio and has lived in

So Paulo since 2007.Since that time, shehas been very activelyinvolved in helpingthe CommunityAssistance Committee(CAC) in manydifferent ways. Shestarted volunteeringat the Vila Acalantoorphanage andeventually was

the coordinator forvolunteers there and its representativeat CAC meetings. She attended onlyone Angel Party before agreeing tobecome its director and has workedhard every year since, ensuring that theparty runs smoothly and contributingespecially to the impressive donationsthe party receives.

A year after becoming director ofthe Angel Party, she took on the roleof chairperson of CAC. She organizesCACs annual Volunteer Day at the U.S.Consulate and, while doing all that,she represents the Projeto Sol daycare

center within CAC,visiting it regularlyand making sure itsneeds are met.

Her husband, GT,feels that Eileensbackground as an

RN is why she isso involved. As anRN, he said, Eileenalways liked to helpothers by beingthere for them anddoing whatever wasnecessary to help.When we got to SoPaulo, she wasnt ableto work in nursingdue to language and

license issues. Soshe decided to help people in otherforms.

Without volunteers like Eileen, theAmerican Society cant continue tohelp the institutions it supports. Thatswhy were proud to give Eileen thisaward. Congratulations Eileen, andthank you for all you do!
