INTRODUCTIONto the
Welcome to the 2011-2012 Jordan Resident’s Guide. This year marks the 20th anniversary of publish-ing these guides for the communities served by
Southwest Newspapers. This Jordan Independent publication is a comprehensive directory of information and resources used by Jordan businesses and residents, especially those who are new to this area.
The Resident’s Guide is a compilation of valuable information — a single source for lists of services, names, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses. Keep it handy; use it often.
Our apologies in advance for omissions or for changes that occur after publication. The challenge in publishing this Resident’s Guide is not only collecting accurate and important information,
but keeping that information current in one of the Twin Cities’ fastest-growing areas.
The Resident’s Guide is also available on the Web at www.jordan-news.com. If you would like additional copies of this publication, call our Circulation Department at 952-345-6682.
For information or to submit corrections, call 952-445-3333 or send an e-mail to [email protected].

Jordan: Preserving the past, preparing for the future
In 1854, a man settled on a piece of land and built a log house in what was then called Sand Creek, but shortly thereafter became “Jordan.” Jordan’s fi rst structures were crude log cabins. These later gave way to modest, but sturdier structures. Often they were
made of brick from a local quarry.Today, Jordan's downtown area has become an antique shoppers’ paradise, with dealers
selling their wares from a variety of buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Adding to the nostalgia are the Jordan Brewery and the Feedmill Restaurant. An old-time feed mill in former years, the Feedmill Restaurant still boasts the original wood fl oors and an awesome view of Sand Creek, which winds its way along the rear of the restaurant and downtown area. Across the street is the famous Pekarna’s Meat Market.
Jordan residents are proud of beautiful Lagoon Park. Complete with a year-round running waterfall, the park is located on the edge of the spring-fed Mill Pond. In recent years, the city has made many improvements to the park, including wrought iron railings, paved walking and bicycle paths, fi shing rocks and pier, a fountain and a beach. The beauty, safety and peaceful atmosphere of this area have made it a favorite recreational spot for Jordan residents.
As growth occurs, the people and the Jordan City Council strive to keep the community's small-town fl avor. Jordan honors its history during the annual Heimatfest and also welcomes its future with newer community events, such as the Jordan Art Festival. These unique celebrations help connect the old and new in Jordan — it's a great place to visit and an even better place to call home.

OrdinancesWinter ParkingThere shall be no parking on city streets, alleys or parking lots within the city of Jordan when there is an accumulation of one and one-half inches of snow or more, from 2 a.m. until the streets, alleys and parking lots are plowed full width. Exceptions: If you reside on First or Water streets between Mill and Varner streets, an odd/even parking system applies. For residents in these areas, the last digit of the day of the month determines which side of the street you should park on. The ordinance does not take effect until 2 a.m., so if you park your vehicle for the night, make sure you park it on the side of the street it should be on after midnight. Call the Jordan Police Department at 952-492-2009 with questions.Watering BanA total watering ban will be in effect every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the restrictions are odd/even. Violators will be cited. There is an exemption for newly seeded or sodded lawns.
Snowmobile OperationIt is unlawful for any person to operate a snowmobile upon the roadway, shoulder or inside bank or slope of any street or highway except on the trails designated by the council. Snowmobiles can only be used between the hours of 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. Any operation may only be on the right-hand side of such street or highway and in the same direction as the highway traffi c on the nearest land of the roadway adjacent thereto. For complete rules and ordinances regarding snowmobile operation, contact the Jordan Snowmobile Club at 952-492-3022 or Jordan City Hall at 952-492-2535.
City Licenses & PermitsBuilding PermitsA building permit is required when any building is erected, altered, demolished or moved and for most new construction, including decks. Call 952-492-2535 for information.
Dog LicensesJordan Government Center .......................................................................952-492-2535Dogs over four months of age must be licensed in Jordan. The cost of a license is $10 and a proof of rabies vaccination is necessary. Licensed dogs are to wear the license tag number on their collars. Any dog found in the city without a license and running at large can be impounded. For more information, check with city hall. A household that has more than two licensed dogs on the premises must apply for a $50 kennel license. To determine if your lost dog has been impounded, call Critter Getters at 952-873-6611.
Community CelebrationsJordan Art Festival & Bike TourThis unique art fair is Jordan’s newest celebration, showcasing local and regional artisans and their fi ne arts. The Jordan Jaycees also offer "Pork in the Park" — with pork sand-wiches, entertainment and more — during this event.
Jordan HeimatfestJordan honors its German heritage with the annual Heimatfest celebration, held each Sep-tember at Lagoon Park. The event features a parade, entertainment, fi reworks and more.
Scott County FairVisit the Scott County Fair each summer, located just south of Jordan. These “fi ve best days of summer” offer something for everyone.
Scott County
As Scott County continues to lead the state in population growth, progress and change are evident throughout this community. From forging a new commuter express transit service to downtown Minneapolis (www.bluexpressbus.com) with
its partners in Shakopee and Prior Lake to embarking on a parks and open space plan and more, Scott County is investing and preparing for the future.
Residents can watch County Board meetings live and on demand, and learn more about Scott County’s programs, policies and events by visiting the County’s Web site (www.co.scott.mn.us), tuning in to your local government access channel for meeting coverage and other programming, and reading the resident newsletter (Scott County SCENE). Residents are invited to become more directly involved by volunteering to serve on a citizen advisory committee or by attending County Board meetings, which are held on most Tuesdays beginning at 9 a.m. (visit the Web site for schedule information).

Almost every home contains some household hazardous waste (HHW), hazardous products or chemicals that can harm human health or the environment if handled improperly. These are products normally used in cleaning, home improvement projects, automobile maintenance, lawn and garden care, hobbies, and a variety of other tasks. They might include paint, varnish, pesticides, household cleaning chemicals, solvents, fuels, wood stain or preservatives, rechargeable batteries, aerosol cans, fl uorescent lamps (including tubes and CFLs), mercury thermostats or thermometers, automotive chemicals or batteries, appliances, electronics, tires, as well as any other household products that are fl ammable, corrosive, reactive or poisonous. Each year, thousands of Americans are injured or poisoned through
incidents involving hazardous household products. Minimizing the amount of hazardous chemicals stored in your home is always a good idea for the sake of your family’s safety.
The Scott County HHW Facility will accept a variety of hazardous materials from Scott County residents. Many of these items are accepted at no charge — visit www.co.scott.mn.us/HHW for details. Please bring a check or cash for those chargeable items, since credit cards are not currently accepted. The facility is located at 588 Country Trail East (Highway 282) in Spring Lake Township, one-half mile west of the intersection of Highways 13 and 282, and County Road 17. The HHW Facility is open at the following times:
Wednesday: noon to 6 p.m. Thursday: noon to 4 p.m. Saturday: 8 a.m. to noon(Note: The RE-USE Room closes 15 minutes earlier) The HHW Facility will be CLOSED for major holiday weekends, including
Easter, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving, as well as the period of Dec. 20 through Jan. 5.
The RE-USE Room is fi lled with a variety of good usable products, including paint, stain, varnish, thinner, putty, adhesives, household chemicals, yard and garden chemicals, automotive chemicals, electronics, etc., and all of these items are available for FREE (to anyone over the age of 18)! A trip to the RE-USE Room as you plan your next home improvement or craft project could certainly save you some money!
Reduce the amount of HHW your family produces by practicing “Smart Shopping.” Measure carefully, buy only what you need, and then use what you buy. Store any leftovers carefully, and protect from freezing, so that they will remain usable.
Please note: The HHW Facility can not accept automotive chemicals in containers larger than 2½ gallons in size (fl uids such as gas, oil, or antifreeze). Other unacceptable items include: household garbage, unknown materials, business waste (call for an appointment), radioactive items or sharps (needles). Regular alkaline batteries can be thrown in your household trash.

The Metropolitan Council is the regional planning organization for the seven-county Twin Cities area. The council advocates for vital communities and a competitive region. It runs the regional bus system, collects and treats wastewater and manages water resources preservation, plans regional parks and administers funds that provide housing opportunities for low- and moderate-income individuals and families.
The council serves the metropolitan counties of Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott and Washington. The region encompasses 189 cities and townships and a population of 2.85 million. It is divided into 16 districts. The governor appoints a representative for each, as well as the council chairperson.
The council’s Web site provides information about the region and regional services. The Data Center has current data on aviation, demographics, the economy, housing, land use, parks and open space, transportation, and water quality and supply. Forecasts of population, employment and households are available, as are city and township data, regional plans, and water resources, and transportation information. Visit www.metrocouncil.org or contact the data center via e-mail at [email protected].

e...... “Before Dr. Jeff, life was not enjoyable, I felt like I was just going through the motions of everyday life. For 10 years I suffered through constant pain, insomnia and just feeling like I had the weight of the world on my shoulders. Two days after my fi rst adjustment I was able to sleep a full 8 hours and I’m now able to deal with everyday stress head on. I’m not longer a zombie, I’m superwomen! Thank you so much Dr. Jeff; you gave me my life back!”

Jordan ISD 717Jordan residents are served by Independent School District 717. The Jordan public
schools program is housed in three facilities: pre-K-4, grades 5-8 and grades 9-12. The elementary school has 655 students and a pre-school program of another 30 students. The 5-8 middle school has 541 students and the high school has 482 students. In all, 160 full-time personnel are employed by the district, which this year has a budget of $14 million.
Among its special programs is a before/after school day care in the elementary that opens at 6 a.m. and closes at 6 p.m. The district has an active community education program for all ages and it operates community recreation programs through Community Education.
A Mac computer lab at the elementary level and IBM labs at the middle and high school level, along with additional computers in the classrooms, offer students a technological boost.
In 2002, the district constructed an addition to the elementary school and the new high school opened in 2003. All three facilities are on the same campus.

Mark Ruggeberg, Jordan High School principal, shared some wisdom at the school's graduation ceremony: It does no good to have a great mind if you have a hollow heart, he said. “I wish you the best and I will miss you. And thank you for letting me be your principal,” said Ruggeberg, who resigned last spring after 16 years as principal. He received a standing ovation during the ceremony.
