INTRODUCTIONCalifornia-basedWellJetrecentlyteamedupwithJordanianpartnerKAC(KhostAquaConsulting)torehabilitatethe21wellssupplyingtheEshadiyafacilityforJPMC(JordanPhosphateMinesCompany).Thisproject ispartofWellJet’sglobalgrowth initiative,beginningwith thewater-challenged environments of the Middle East-North Africa region, and expandingworldwide.BACKGROUNDPhosphate, used in agriculture and industry around the world, is one of leadingexportsof theHashemiteKingdomof Jordan,providing thenation’s treasurywithmuch-neededforeigntradeincome.

JPMCOperationsandFacilities

Large quantities of water are required torecover phosphate, via slurry that isprocessed to separate the mineral fromsandandclayinthematrix.

JPMC, Jordan’s only phosphate miningcompany, operates threemines – Russeifa,HassaandEshidiya.

The Eshidiya mine is located in southernJordan, east of Al Jafr, in the Ma’anGovernate. And it is here, to this remotedesert, that WellJet/KAC deployed – toperform itspatented rehabilitationprocessonthewellsthatprovidewatertothemine.

Thewellshadbeendrilledin1991.Totaldepthsrangedfrom234-288m(767-945’).Staticwaterlevelsrangedfrom69-113m(226-371’).Whennew,thewellsproduced50-150m3/hr(220-660gpm).Bythetimeofrehabilitation,flowrateshadfallensolowthateventhemostproductivewell(#18)haddroppedto100m3/hr(440gpm).Staticwaterlevelshaddeclinedto72-119m(236-390’).

As flow rates and efficiencyplummeted, variousrehabilitation efforts weremade, but recovery neverregained originalperformancelevels.The wells, in operation for25 years, exhibited adeclining flow rate andefficiency profile consistentwith the industry-acceptedgeneric profile shown atright:

WRDTechnicalBulletin(SpecificCapacity),TedJohnsonSincetheEshidiyafacilityrequireswaterfromatleast14wellstokeepoperating,WellJet/KACbeganbyrehabilitating7wellsthatwerecurrentlyoutofserviceforvariousreasons–includingforeignobjectsthathadbecomelodgeddownhole:

SomeoftheseforeignobjectswerefishedoutbyKAC.Forthosethatcouldnotbefishedout,WellJet(USPatentNo.8,312,930)high-pressurewaterjettingtoolswereutilizedtopulverize.REHABILITATIONPROCESSOncetheobstacleswerecleared,jettingbegan.WellJetutilizeshighlypressurizedwaterinalaminarflowtoremoveencrustationinsidethewellcasing,openpluggedperforations,andpenetrateintothegravelpacktobreakupharmfuldepositsthatimpedewaterflow.Jettingstartsatthebottomoftheperforatedarea,andcontinuesthroughouttheproductionzonetoensurethat100%ofperfsarejetted.

JPMCpersonnelobservehigh-pressurejettingfrombehindsafetybarrier

Jettingwasfollowedbydual-swabsurge-blockingandairlifting,toremovefillthatcameinfromthejettingprocess.Itwasnotunusualtoseeupto40m(131’)ofmaterialdislodgedbyjetting.

BecauseWellJetgeneratessuchtremendousenergyoutbeyondthewellscreenintothe gravel pack and near-wellbore formation, proper surging after jetting isessentialtopulldislodgeddepositsintothewell,fromwhichtheycanbeevacuated.

RESULTSWhenthese21wellsweredrilledin1991,theirflowratesrangedfromalowof50m3/hr(220gpm)[Well#4]toahighof150m3/hr(660gpm)[Well#1].Theaverageflowratewas100m3/hr(440gpm).BythetimeoftheWellJet/KACrehabilitationeffort,flowrateshaddroppedtoahighof90m3/hr(396gpm)[Well#5],andalowof31m3/hr(136gpm)[Well#20].Theaverageflowratewasjust57m3/hr(251gpm)–anaveragedeclineof-44m3/hr(-194gpm),or-42%.Afterrehabilitation,flowratesimprovedfromalowof70m3/hr(308gpm)[Well#4],toahighof145m3/hr(638gpm)[Well#15].Averageflowratewas118m3/hr(519gpm).Theaverageflowrateimprovementwas+61m3/hr(+268gpm),or+122%.Comparingoriginalflowrateswhenthewellswerenew,theWellJet/KACrehabilitationsimprovedflowanaverageof+17m3/hr(+75gpm),or+19%.Thisflowrateimprovementoveroriginalperformancehastakenplacedespiteadeclineinstaticwaterlevelsthroughoutthewellfieldofapproximately-6m(almost-20’).
