Summary Statement: Joongsub Kim’s work centers on “engaged scholarship.” Deeply rooted in community engagement and applied research, his scholarship follows Social Construction, Participatory Action Research and Practice, as well as Architect as Facilitator, among the nine public interest design and practice research (PID[PR]) models proposed by him (published as a chapter in a book entitled Handbook of Socially Engaged Architecture in 2018 by Routledge, New York). Dr. Kim has enriched architecture through his teaching, research, service, and leadership by advancing the national discourse on significant urban challenges, social justice, community identity, and service values in architecture, while also establishing alternative practices that empower some of Detroit’s most challenging communities. Impacting National and International Dialogues: Dr. Kim’s significant research in the global challenge of urban growth and shrinkage, sustainable communities, alternative urbanisms, urban communication, community identity, urban design review, and community development capacity building systems has resulted in 20 national and international grants, including a National Endowment for the Arts grant, a Knight Foundation Arts Challenge grant, a National and Community Service America grant, a grant from the Urban Communication Foundation in partnership with the Environmental Design Research Association, Graham Foundation Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts Research grants, Yonsei University- Korean Government Urban Regeneration research grants, and Congress for the New Urbanism research grants. Dr. Kim has been featured in more than 50 national and international publications and presentations, including the Journal of Urban Design, Environment & Behavior, Urban Design International, the Architectural Research Centers Consortium Journal, Places, Architectural Record, Architect (The Journal of The American Institute of Architects), IN_BO Journal (Italy), Open House International Journal (UK), the Association of College of Schools of Architecture (ACSA) national conferences, the international Making Cities Livable Conference, and conferences at Oxford University, England; University College Dublin, Ireland; Yonsei University, Korea; and Harvard University. Dr. Kim’s work in design review, involving, design reviewers in all 50 states in the United States was funded by the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, Cambridge, Massachusetts, written for a book, and published by Springer Press in 2019. His most recent scholarly projects in design games, public interest design, urban ruins, and architectural pedagogy for societal challenges were published as chapters in several books by Routledge Press among others. Dr. Kim, as an expert in engaged scholarship, was an “Invited Referee / Examinateur” for the International Insight Grant Application, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada in 2016, 2018, and 2019. He is also the principal investigator for the national and international community development systems research in 2017–2019 (funded by the Kellogg Foundation and the Erb Foundation) to support the citywide initiative of Building the Engine of Community Development in Detroit (BECDD). In addition, Dr. Kim revived the dormant American Institute of Architects (AIA) Detroit Urban Priorities Committee (UPC), which then received an AIA National grant. During 2010–11, he organized four symposia and exhibits entitled “Detroit by Design 2011” where 120 architects from around the world submitted their work. He convened experts and citizens for dialogues on the “shrinking city” phenomena, focusing on urban centers, transportation, urban agriculture, and landscape. The event received national attention and was featured in the AIA journal Architect, culminating in a book called Detroit by Design 2011, co-edited by Dr. Kim. The event also stimulated numerous proposals in 2012, one of which was an international ideas competition organized by the UPC, in which 400 architects from around the world participated. The competition received international and national attention, being presented the book Detroit by Design 2012: International Riverfront Competition, which was co-edited by Dr. Kim. The competition is the subject of research by members of several universities, including Columbia University, and is used as a national model for an ideas competition and civic engagement by AIA chapters, such as AIA Colorado and AIA Ohio. In addition, the competition inspired a significant community outreach effort in 2013, called the “Jefferson-Chalmers Pop-Up Retail Project” along Detroit’s riverfront. This event, led by Dr. Kim and key members of the UPC in collaboration with several communities, received extensive citywide attention and media coverage, such as Model D. Dr. Kim was invited to join the AIA National Research Summit, a task force advising the AIA on its national research policy in 2015, 2017, and 2018. Dr. Kim has been serving on the AIA National Committee on Regional and Urban Design since 2014. He also received the AIA Michigan Chapter President’s


Award in 2012 and AIA Detroit Chapter Charles Blessing Award in 2015, in recognition of his “outstanding contributions to the advancement of the built environment.” Creating Architecture through Alternative Practices: Dr. Kim’s work transcends the boundaries of architecture, incorporates other disciplines, and integrates the academic with the practice. Through more than 60 of Dr. Kim’s studio projects and research studies, he managed to expand the influence of the architectural profession. His social construction model as an alternative practice won first prize in the 2005/2006 International Architectural Education Competition, which was judged by renowned experts, including Professor Henry Sanoff and was published in Open House International, England. Dr. Kim established two volunteer group initiatives, Good Deeds Good Design Group in Detroit ([GD]³) and Public Interest Design Practices and Research (PID[PR]), expanding the scope of architectural engagement by promoting alternative practices and earning a national grant from NCARB (National Council of Architectural Registration Boards). In addition, Dr. Kim organized a unique international PID[PR] competition in 2012 that encouraged the collaboration between the public and architects through social media. Dr. Kim co-organized and hosted the Structures for Inclusion International Conference in Detroit, a leading international forum in public interest design and socially responsible development, in partnership with Design Corps, Raleigh, North Carolina. Dr. Kim’s work has been disseminated nationally and internationally through more than 60 presentations and peer-reviewed articles, and he earned national research grants from the Boston Society of Architects and the Graham Foundation. Empowering the Toughest Communities: Dr. Kim’s pioneering work, through his student-based Lawrence Technological University Detroit Studio (ltu-DS), focuses on small and troubled communities that face brutal realities in the trenches of America’s most challenging city. He provides opportunities for design-based social learning that benefits professionals, architecture students, residents, and their children, educating them on the power of design, while changing their world views. As Director of the Detroit Studio and an educator and facilitator, Dr. Kim works with “small heroes” and grassroots organizations, having collaborated with 2,000 citizens in 50 neighborhoods during 19 years. His story was published in 2006 in the book From the Studio to the Street, which was co-sponsored by the AIA, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, ACSA, the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning, and the American Association for Higher Education. According to the editor, William Zeisel, the book was the first in the nation to make a formal connection between service-learning pedagogy and architectural practice. The Detroit Studio has been the subject of research studies as a successful example of a grassroots-based design center by scholars in Germany, Turkey, and Korea, and universities in California, Louisiana, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Dr. Kim also received the 2003–2004 ACSA /AIAS National New Faculty Teaching Award. He fostered collaboration among various groups to promote sustainable communities and regional sustainability and received the 2006–2007 ACSA National Collaborative Practice Award citation and national grants from several agencies, including the Adaptive Environments Center, Boston, the National Endowment for the Arts, Knight Foundation, and the American Architectural Foundation, Washington, D.C., in collaboration with the AIA.

He also serves as a design and planning consultant for organizations in both Korea and in Michigan. He has a joint graduate architectural science and planning degree (MIT, Cambridge, Massachusetts), a PhD in architecture-environmental psychology (University of Michigan, Ann Arbor), a graduate architecture degree (University of Nebraska, Lincoln), and an undergraduate architectural engineering degree (Hong-Ik University, Korea). Dr. Kim has received a number of awards and grants, including a 1999 Lincoln Institute of Land Policy National Doctoral Dissertation Research Fellowship; a 2003 Architecture for Social Justice Award sponsored by the Adaptive Environments Center, Boston, and the National Endowment for the Arts; and a 2003–2004 Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA)/American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) National New Faculty Teaching Award. The mission of The Detroit Studio is educational, as it provides students with an enriched educational experience through community-based architectural, urban design and community development projects, while offering accessible and useful programs and information to the public, design profession, municipal officials and business community. The Detroit Studio is an off-campus studio facility, founded in 1999 by the CoAD at LTU, located in midtown Detroit. Its location in central Detroit creates a unique educational setting for students, while its long-term commitment to working with Detroit neighborhoods distinguishes it from the programs of other local universities. The Detroit Studio is committed to serving communities in Detroit, Wayne County and Southeastern Michigan as part of the mission of a local university, through Service Learning projects that utilize interdisciplinary collaboration and teamwork to address real needs, problems and potentials. The projects developed at The Detroit Studio serve communities in areas of Urban Design, Planning, and Sustainable Community Development. The studio establishes partnerships with municipalities, design professionals, professional organizations, community organizations, business leaders, and local schools and universities. Dr. Kim has collaborated with nearly 2000 participants and 150 organizations in 50 communities over 19 years, through more than 60 studios at the Detroit Studio program. Dr. Kim also founded two design and research groups called [GD]³ (Good Deeds Good Design Group in Detroit) and PID[PR] (Public Interest Design Practices and Research). He published journal articles and book chapters on the areas of service learning, architectural pedagogy, design review, New Urbanism, sustainable urban design, sustainable community revitalization, and environment psychology. His articles have been published in peer-reviewed journals including IN_BO (Italy), Urban Design International, Journal of Urban Design, Places, Environment & Behavior, Open House International (UK), and Architectural Research Centers Consortium Journal.
