Greetings all, This has been an exciting summer at JLHS! Of course the renovation project has dominated our attention for the entire summer. Things are progressing nicely and the changes are most welcome. The most noticeable difference at this point in the project is the fact that the new windows and floor tile make the second floor much brighter. We are anxious to see the changes in the science labs. Soon. We have also had the opportunity to welcome to the Jonathan Law family a number of new employees. They are: Vanessa Aranda, Paraeducator; Gayle Cianciolo, Paraeducator, Lindsay Ferrera, Math Teacher; Lisa Hazelton, Receptionist/Secretary; Gail Hreschak, Foods Teacher; Sharon Kish, Paraeducator, Marla Kosenski, French Teacher; Nancy Murphy, Reading Teacher; Anthony Nigretti, English Teacher, Leslie Pinto, Social Studies Teacher; Kathy Rodriquez, Paraeducator; Kathy Scarinzi, Nurse and Jim Winebrenner, Special Education Teacher. We also will have Stephen Colacchio, Nicole Pirrello and Molly Rosner as Interns. Two teachers will be returning to us: Taryn Cutler, Math Teacher and Mary Raccuia, TV Production Teacher. Each of these individuals brings with them many talents. Their presence will enhance the JLHS team. I would like to take this opportunity to publicly acknowledge the work of several individuals who have retired or resigned. Mr. Joe Beler, Jr. served this community well both as a teacher and a coach. Ms. Taryn Cutler taught math at Law for one year. Ms. Jennifer Jerolmon had a very busy summer. She got married and also found a new job. Mr. George Lardas taught science for one year. Mr. Matt McCloskey taught social studies and coached football for eight years. Mrs. Lorraine Morlath worked in our guidance department for ten years. Ms. Mary Sullivan taught Latin for eleven years. Please join me in wishing each and every one of them the very best in all their future endeavors. Our professional development sessions on August 30th and September 1st will focus on the district’s instructional plan – specifically the four learning principles all teachers in the district will use to guide their instruction throughout the year. It is my vision for Jonathan Law that all teachers work hard to (1) ensure that your child deepens his/her understanding of the world of knowledge and (2) give them the tools they need to apply what they know to novel situations. Our work is challenging and exciting. With you as our partners, I am confident that we will be successful! erely,
Dear Friends, On behalf of the Jonathan Law faculty and staff, it is my privilege to welcome you to a new year at Jonathan Law High School! We are excited and eager to join over 950 students and almost 200 faculty and staff for what is sure to be an exciting year full of hard work, successes, challenges and our ever enduring Lawmen Pride.
The most important core value at our school remains the same, and that is our commitment to each and every student’s success and well-being.
This newsletter is being sent to you electronically. If you would prefer to have future editions of our newsletter mailed home to you, please complete the form and return it to our school office.
There is a lot of information contained in the following pages. I ask that both parents and students please review the information carefully. We have redesigned our school website to better serve you by getting you quick links to the many happenings at our school. And, of course, our weekly phone messages will resume on Sunday nights (“Good Evening…”) letting you know what to expect for the upcoming week. As well, our Parent Portal will be up and running so you can check on your child’s grades and assignments. We also have our Twitter account @LawFran2015 and our new Facebook page @JonathanLawHighSchool as additional ways to keep up with ongoing events at Law.
More than anything please know that we are always available to answer your questions, listen to your concerns or suggestions, and pass along your compliments about our school. Here are some quick notes regarding the start of our year:
• The first day of school for all students will begin on Monday, August 29th at 7:20 AM. Sophomore, Junior, and Senior students should report to their advisory location (as noted on your schedule) to begin
the first day of school. Freshman should report to the auditorium. We will be hosting class meetings during the first few days of school to welcome everyone back and to clarify our
expectations for student success. • Freshmen and New Student Orientation (for new students and parents) will be on Friday, August 26th from 1:30-4 PM. We will
begin with a “Welcome to Jonathan Law” Luncheon in the cafeteria followed by our orientation at 2PM in the auditorium. Our program will conclude in the old gymnasium where students and parents will get to visit our Student Activity Fair and check out the many great opportunities for students to get involved in at our school. We encourage all parents and students to join us.
• Available on line will be The Handbook for Students and Parents 2016-2017. This can be found on the district website (www.milforded.org) under District Information/Publications.
On behalf of the Jonathan Law High School Faculty and Staff, I look forward to sharing the school year with you and I invite you to become an active part of our school community.
Sincerely, Fran Thompson Mr. Fran Thompson Principal

NURSE’S OFFICE NEWS – August 2016
A reminder that all students who require medications in school must have the required medication authorization forms completed by your physician and brought to the nurse’s office. If you need help obtaining the proper paperwork please call the nurse’s office and we will be glad to assist you. If your child needed a physical to return to school please hand it in to the nurses before the first day of school - this will eliminate any confusion on the first day. Mrs. Malski and Mrs. Valentine will return this year on Monday, August 22nd and are on staff from 7:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. We encourage parents to notify the nurse’s office if your child will be out for an extended period of time due to illness or injury. If your child will need accommodations due to an injury please call the nurse’s office before your child returns to school so plans can be put in place. We request that parents inform the school nurses of any changes in their child’s health status that may impact their education. All students who are participating in athletics must have a current physical on file in the nurse’s office. Physicals are good for 13 months from the date of the physical. There is now one form that is used for all physicals it is the HAR-3, all physician’s offices should have the new form, please do not use any of the old forms. Physicals should always be handed in to the nurses – NEVER to coaches. If you have any questions regarding the school health program here at Jonathan Law please call the nurse’s office at ext. 5011/ 5012. The nurse’s direct fax line is 203-783-3641 or you can email either of the nurses: Mrs. Kathy Malski: [email protected] Mrs. Wendy Valentine: [email protected] Thank you.

In order to attend their own class dance or other class dances held during the year, a student must have the following: • Less than a total of 6 days of in-school and/or out-of-school suspensions. • Less than 10 after school administrative detentions. • No expulsion during the school year of the dance, if this restriction is a condition of the expulsion decision. • No violation of the school’s drug and alcohol policy in school or at any school function. This includes, but is not
limited to, any school dances, athletic functions, or field trips. • If a dance is held on a school day, students must attend school on the day of the dance. • If a dance is held on a Saturday, students must attend school on the day before the dance.

REGARDING BULLYING
Section: Students Subject: Safe School Climate Plan AR-5131.911
Administrative Regulation Milford Public Schools
The Milford Board of Education is committed to creating and maintaining a safe educational environment free from bullying, harassment and discrimination. In order to foster an atmosphere conducive to learning, the Board has developed the following Safe School Climate Plan, consistent with state law and Board Policy. This Plan represents a comprehensive approach to addressing bullying and cyberbullying and sets forth the Board’s expectations for preventing, intervening, and responding to incidents of bullying. Bullying behavior is strictly prohibited, and students who are determined to have engaged in such behavior are subject to disciplinary action, which may include suspension or expulsion from school. The district’s commitment to addressing bullying behavior, however, involves a multi-faceted approach, which includes education and the promotion of a school atmosphere in which bullying will not be tolerated by students or school staff. For complete Bullying Policies, please refer to the link below in the Parent and Student Handbook at the Milford Board of Education Website:
http://www.milforded.org/uploaded/MPSPolicies/Policies_5000/5131_911_Bullying_Policy.pdf Or go to: milforded.org and click on, “Policies/Procedures/Forms” then click on, “Milford Board of Ed Policies”. Then, “Series 5000 Students” and finally, “5131-911 Bullying.”
Jonathan Law High School 2016-2017 PTSA Meeting Schedule
TBD
` Meetings are from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the schools indicated
Dress Code (5132) (Taken from the High School Parent-Student Handbook)
Students’ overall appearance should fall within the generally accepted definitions of neatness and cleanliness. Generally, students are expected to dress and groom themselves for the business of school so as to neither distract other students or teachers, disrupt the educational process, pose a health or safety threat to anyone or cause damage to the school facility. Clothing should be clean, untorn, free from promotion of or reference to drugs, alcohol and tobacco, and free from violent signs, symbols or words or those which are obscene, lewd, vulgar or defamatory. Clothing should also be free of slogans, names, titles or the like which are likely to incite or inflame.
The serious nature of our school activities and pride in the reputation of our school require a positive, safe and non-disruptive learning environment. The Board of Education believes that student dress and grooming can significantly influence behavior. The Board of Education encourages students to dress in clothing appropriate to the school situation. Restrictions on freedom of student dress may be applied whenever the mode of dress in question is: unsafe either for the student or those around the student disruptive to school operations and the education process in general contrary to law Clothing, hair arrangements or other personal adornments or embellishments intended to be, or that incidentally become, disruptive or interfere
with regular school operations are prohibited. The following clothing styles are specifically prohibited: Black-soled shoes, boots, or sneakers which mark the floor. Shoes containing wheels. “See-through” style and/or mesh style shirts, blouses or midriff tops. Athletes on school teams may wear mesh team shirts on game days so
long as a tee shirt or other shirt is worn underneath. Short skirts (skirts shall be of an appropriate length and fit). Tank tops or those with spaghetti straps, as well as sleeveless shirts with oversized armholes may be worn so long as another acceptable shirt
is worn underneath. Outer jackets & coats, unless allowed by the school principal or designee due to the temperature in the building or other valid reasons. Underwear which is visible or worn as outerwear. Ripped jeans/cutoffs, short shorts and athletic shorts. Spandex clothing except for phys. ed. class or athletic practice, unless worn underneath another acceptable garment. Sunglasses indoors, unless prescribed by doctor. The wearing of hats and other headgear is not permitted in any schools during the school day. Middle School and High School
At the middle and high school level (6-12), it is recommended that clothing which is worn in physical education shall not be worn in other classes or parts of the school nor shall clothing worn in regular classes be worn in physical education. Physical education teachers may use discretion in prohibiting certain clothing for safety reasons. Pants must be worn at the waist if, in the principals’ discretion, they cause a safety problem or if waist, midriff and hips are exposed.
For safety reasons and to prevent interference with the educational process, sandals, open-toed shoes, clogs, platform sneakers or platform shoes may be prohibited at the discretion of the principal.
The wearing of hats will not be permitted in any schools during the school day. Exceptions may be made by the principal for bona fide religious or medical reasons.
Jewelry and other visible body ornamentation shall not be permitted if it poses a health and safety threat.
Coaches will make a determination for their individual sport regarding the appropriateness of dress, jewelry and other matters enumerated above, in the best interests of the health and safety for all students.
Exceptions to the mandatory dress policy may be made by the school principal for bona fide religious or medical reasons. Where a
student’s bona fide religious beliefs, health needs or disability conflict with the mandatory dress policy, the school will provide reasonable accommodation. Any student who desires accommodation shall notify the school principal in writing of the requested accommodation and the factual basis for the request. Approved coverings worn as part of a student’s bona fide religious practices or beliefs shall not be prohibited.
Students whose dress or grooming does not conform to these standards will be referred to a school administrator who will inform students of necessary changes in dress or grooming. If the students fail to remedy the problem, the student’s parent or guardian will be contacted. If the problem persists, the student may be subject to student discipline, up to and including expulsion. 52 Voluntary Option
After extensive discussion and review, if the vast majority of the parents of a school and the principal wish to adopt a standard attire policy or school uniforms, then the school’s principal should notify the Superintendent’s office. The administration, after approving the proposed standard attire or uniform, will notify the board which will provide assistance, as appropriate. Parents who cannot afford to purchase uniforms or standard attire will still be required to have their children follow the mandatory dress code. 3rd revision adopted: September 1, 2000
