Child Developmentby Janet Williams

www.babygrowz.co.uk

A big part of being a parent is worrying about our children. But,although it is not always possible to control what happens in theirlives, you can ensure they have the skills they need to do the bestthey can and achieve their full potential in life. Many people believe that a child’s education begins when they startschool but it actually begins at birth. An American study concludedthat by 4 years of age most of a child’s IQ is in place. To be able tolearn effectively each child has to be developmentally ready - theyneed to have experienced appropriate amounts of sensoryexperience: play, movement, music and speech. They also need tobe able to pay attention, which in turn means having a degree ofcontrol over their body. But many schools are finding children have not had theseexperiences and so are not yet ready to make use of what schoolhas to offer. In fact a recent survey showed that an amazing 50% ofUK children begin school lacking the skills that are vital for aneffective start to learning. Learning is not just about the ’three R’s’(reading, writing and arithmetic) but also about the relationshipbetween the brain and the body. For instance the development oflanguage is a whole body skill while balance, posture, coordinationand control of eye movements are all essential for reading, academicachievement and optimising intelligence. Studies of school age children have found two main areas of concern- retention of the Primitive Reflexes and a poor balance system - andprogrammes working on these two areas have had immediate andeffective results on the children’s school work. But not having theseskills prior to starting school means a child loses important learningtime.Although learning can take place at any stage, it is more efficient if itcoincides with the time of ‘neurological readiness’. By fosteringthese skills at the correct age and stage of development (i.e. the first2-3 yrs of life) it is possible to ensure that by the time your child startsschool he is fully ready and able and more than willing to learn. All of these skills can be learned at home simply through the use ofplay - there is no hot housing or cramming needed. A child’s firstexperience of the world begins with its mother who (along with dad)is the child’s first and best teacher, so who better to ensure thesevital skills are laid down? And all you have to do is PLAY and havefun!

So, you've packed the bags, cancelled the papers and arereally looking forward to beingaway for a couple of weeks freefrom the usual routine but you’rereally anxious about keepingyour young kids occupied onthat long plane flight. Besides packing a few greatnew travel toys that your toddlerhasn’t seen before, you'll wantto have some airplane activitiesthat won't break, get lost or costthe earth. So here are some practical tipsfor travelling with toddlers andpreschoolers that will help youto relax, enjoy the journey andarrive with your sense ofhumour!1. Bathroom Make sure that your toddler hasused the toilet before boardingthe aircraft as they are spaciousand much cleaner compared tothe aircraft ones! It’s also a goodidea to carry a supply of babywipes and be sure to put them ina place where you can easilyreach them throughout the flight.2. Seat choice Only choose bulkhead seats ifyour baby needs a baby bed asthe armrests can’t be moved.Normal seats are far better ifyour baby or toddler wants to liedown on the seat with their headon your lap as the armrests canbe moved up which is far morecomfortable. 3. Ear pressureIf your baby is breastfeeding oron a bottle, give them the breastor bottle during take-off and

landing as it is the best thing fortheir sensitive ears. They will bemore relaxed and far lessdistressed and you will feel moreat ease too.If your child is older, then carrycotton wool or ask for earplugsas soon as you board theaircraft. Make use of them fortake-off then save them forlanding as the crew may nothave any fresh ones left by then.Or play a yawning game withthem to see how many timesthey can yawn on take off orlanding as this helps pop theirears so the pressure doesn’tcause them discomfort. 4. FoodCarry a supply of biscuits, water, juice and healthy snacks for yourtoddler. Raisins are great forkeeping little hands and mindsoccupied for quite awhile andalso carry milk packets (the UHTsmall packets) yourself. Airline

snacks run out in flight and milkis a shortage very often too sobring your own so you won’tpanic if they run out. 5. Bottle heatingIf you ask the crew to heat upyour baby bottle check thetemperature of the liquidyourself periodically and don'tdepend on the crew as they areextremely busy. Most crew inEconomy Class are not mothersthemselves (as they are veryyoung) so they don’t necessarilyknow the right temperature foryour child's feed. Airline creware most willing to help but it’salways best to takeresponsibility for your ownchild’s bottle. 6. HealthIf your child has a cold it’s agood idea to see a doctorbefore the flight to check if yourchild is fit to fly. Toddlers flyingwith a cold can experienceterrible pain during take-off andlanding and it’s also dangerousto their eardrums too!7. ClothesAlways carry a change ofclothes for your child and it is agood idea to carry a change oftop / t-shirt for yourself too. Younever know when you will needit...8. RubbishGet a carrier or plastic bag fromthe crew, to put your rubbish inas you go along. It helps tokeep your area clean and moreorganised. Also take fragrancedbags with you to dispose of yournappies before putting them inthe toilet bins provided.

9. BooksIt’s always a great idea to carryreading books (new ones as wellas old favourites), colouringbooks and crayons, as well asan ipod with their favouritesongs and stories to listen to. If you can carry a portable DVDplayer they are usually a big hitwith toddlers. If you bring yourown DVD player and your child’sfavourite DVDs then you willhave full control over the contentand also the timing of their videoentertainment which is good formaintaining a healthy balanceabout how much they watch.Another alternative might be toplay their DVDs on your laptop.10. Games to playToddlers often get naughty whenthey experience long delays totheir journey, so being preparedis half the battle.Pack a goody bag filled withactivities to keep them occupiedand busy and include things likeplay dough, a few blocks, somesmall board books, a little car oryour toddler's favourite teddy. You could also wrap each itemin wrapping paper a few timestoo and play pass the parcelwith them, to add to the fun andexcitement. These ideas are best and mosteffective for keeping your childoccupied during the normalwaking hours on a flight as theyencourage your child’simagination and creativity.Put some fun pictures onto yourdigital camera of the people andplaces you are going to visit orpictures of a recent trip you’vebeen on, like to the zoo, for yourchild to look at. During the flight, you can relive the fun and tellstories about where/who you'revisiting. It will keep your little onebusy and relaxed which willmake the flight a pleasurableone for all of you.

When the flight attendantdelivers drinks, ask for a cup, acouple ice cubes, and a straw. There are endless games youcan make up with thiscombination as ice is fascinatingto toddlers. Make sure that theice doesn't end up in their mouththough as it is a choking hazard.

Bring a book of Finger Rhymesto teach your toddler. Great onesare: Finger Rhymes by MarcBrown and Little Hands, FingerPlays & Action Songs: SeasonalActivities by Emily Stetson and365 Games Smart Toddlers Playby Sheila Ellison. Learning how to fasten andunfasten an "old fashioned"seatbelt, jacket zipper andpoppers or buttons on theirclothing (or a carry-on bag) cankeep them occupied for a longtime too. And don’t forget the old favouriteof peek- a- boo if you’ve gotfriendly neighbours and “I spy”!It’s all about relaxing, imaginingthe journey going really wellbefore you fall asleep, a coupleof nights before you travel, so

your unconscious gets ready forthe journey positively, plusmaking sure you plan ahead. It’salso about being flexible andrelaxed when unexpected thingshappen that you have no controlover. Toddlers will pick up onyour vibes so lighten up, chill outand have a brilliant holiday!
