Types and Examples
What is a Joint?• Any place where two or more bones meet• Classified as immovable or movable
Immovable Joints
- Located in the skull (picture) and ribs
- This joint doesn’t move
- When the bones fuse together it is called a suture
Ball and Socket
• The ball and socket
joint allow you to move at a 360° rotation. (Hip and Shoulder)
• This joint allows for the most range of motion
Pivot Joint
• This allows one joint to rotate around another
• Picture a basketball player that pivots on one foot so not to travel
• Located in forearm and neck
Hinge Joint
• Knee, elbow, and fingers
• Move in only 1 direction
• Open and shut like a door
• Elbow
Gliding Joint
• This joint allows one bone to slide over another
• Located in between your vertebrae and your wrists and ankles
