1. Introduction

Multiuser and multiantenna communication systems have many similar-ities. This is particularly true when the transmit antenna array sendsmultiple independent data streams that interfere in time and frequency,a paradigm that is commonly referred to as multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) or more specifically, spatial multiplexing. In the case of spatialmultiplexing, each data stream must be separated and decoded at the re-ceiver, which creates a scenario that is formally nearly identical to the caseof jointly decoding multiple interfering users. Indeed, many of the theo-retical advances in multiantenna receivers have closely followed previousadvances in multiuser detectors. At the present time, innovation in bothrealms is synergistic since advances in either the spatial or user domain canbe used to spur progress in the other.

The goal of this chapter is to provide a contemporary overview of jointdetection techniques in MIMO systems, and to generate insights into par-allels with multiuser systems. We begin by developing a general matrixchannel model for MIMO systems, and note how this model is applicable to

many multiuser scenarios, as well as highlighting the areas of departure forsingle user MIMO versus multiuser single antenna systems. We then reviewthe key capacity results for multi-antenna systems under varying assump-tions of the amount of channel knowledge and other practical constraintslike antenna correlation. Next, we describe receiver architectures for MIMOsystems with particular emphasis on linear detectors, i.e. zero-forcing andMMSE. We present fairly recent results that quantify the exact perfor-mance of such receivers. We also discuss the challenges posed by multiuserMIMO systems, where the interference can be either non-coherent (for ex-ample, background interference from neighboring cells) or coherent (stronginterference from within the same cell or nearby interfering base stations).Finally, we discuss how MIMO systems can balance raw throughput andreliability by using the spatial dimensions for both diversity and multiplex-ing; here we contrast recent theory results with practical switching schemesthat are useful in practice.

2. Wireless Channels: The Multi-antenna Realm

A wireless system spans multiple complementary dimensions: time, fre-quency, space, and users. The system model used throughout this chapter isa general linear model that accommodates most single- and multiuser com-munication scenarios. This multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) modelis given by

where x is a K-dimensional vector of the signal input, y is the N -dimensional vector of the signal output, and the N -dimensional vector nis complex additive Gaussian noise, whose real and imaginary componentsare typically modelled as independent Gaussian random variables with zeromean and variance σ2/2 (i.e., circularly distributed). The channel is de-scribed by H, which is an N ×K complex (possibly random) matrix.

Although simple, the model in (2.1) encompasses a wide variety ofchannels of interest in wireless communications, including multiple accesschannels, dispersive and selective linear channels in both the time and fre-quency domains, spatial channels, and other multidimensional signallingscenarios. In each of these cases, the values N , K and H assume differ-ent physical meanings. For example, in a synchronous DS-CDMA additivenoise broadcast channel, K and N are respectively the number of users andthe spreading gain while the columns of H are the spreading codes for theK users. Fading can easily be integrated by multiplying H by a diagonal

matrix Hk = diag(h1 h2 . . . hN ) where hn is the fading coefficient to thekth user for the nth coded symbol. Note that each user would have a uniquenoise vector nk as well.

In a single-antenna and single user block transmission system overa broadband (time-dispersive/frequency-selective) channel, H is typicallyused to model the inter-symbol interference. In this case, the K input sym-bols refer to the block length, and the K + ν output symbols are a resultof convolution of an input vector of length K with a channel of ν + 1 non-negligible taps. In OFDM, a cyclic prefix is appended to the transmit vectorto make x have length K ′ > K + ν, which allows H to appear circulantand hence decomposable into a diagonal (interference-free) matrix with theInverse Discrete Fourier Transform (IDFT) and Discrete Fourier Transform(DFT) matrices applied at the transmitter and receiver, respectively.

In the single-user narrowband channel with multiple antennas at thetransmitter and receiver, respectively, we identify K and N with the num-ber of transmit and receive antennas while H models the propagation co-efficients between each pair of transmit and receive antennas.

Naturally, the same linear model can be adapted to problems that incor-porate many of the above features in combination; in such cases it may bemore convenient to use matrices or higher-dimensional objects to representthe input and output quantities. For example, for a channel with J userseach transmitting with nT antennas using spread-spectrum with spreadinggain G and a receiver with nR antennas, K = nTJ and N = nRG In short,the simple model y = Hx + n is surprisingly general and we will use vari-ants of it throughout this chapter to demonstrate means for detecting xin a spatial context. Because of the generality of the model, particulary itsrelations to a CDMA signalling, it is clear that many of the techniques de-veloped in the last decade by the MIMO community are directly applicableto multiuser systems in general and CDMA receivers in particular.

Although, fundamentally, the single-user multiantenna problem is anal-ogous to that of an unfaded synchronous CDMA channel with randomspreading [139] there are, nonetheless, some important differences.

(1) Joint coding of the transmit signals is typically more feasible in singleuser multiantenna systems than in CDMA. Particulary in the uplink, itis not possible to coordinate the transmitted waveforms of CDMA users.In a single user multiantenna system it is possible to advantageouslycorrelate the transmitted waveforms.

(2) The transmit power constraint applies to the sum of powers in the

multiantenna case whereas in CDMA it applies to each individual user.(3) The spatial signatures for the various transmit antennas are imposed

by the physics of the channel, whereas in a CDMA system the usersequences can be designed.

Despite these differences, many of the results on random CDMA are veryrelevant to the multiantenna problem considered in this chapter, especiallywhen the channel matrix H is unknown to the multiantenna transmitter.In the rest of the chapter we will focus on a single-user channel wheremultiple transmit and receive antennas are employed, before revisiting thecombination of multiple antennas and multiple users in Section 7.

3. Definitions and Preliminaries

Let us now elaborate on the model for a single-user MIMO channel wherethe transmitter has nT antennas and the receiver has nR antennas. Theearly contributions on this topic are [127, 38], and we refer readers to[33, 46, 44, 135, 14] for recent articles of a more tutorial nature.

With reference to the general model in (2.1), x contains the symbolstransmitted from the nT transmit antennas and y the symbols received bythe nR receive antennas. The general model given in (2.1) becomes

Thus any difference in average power gain is factored out of H and absorbedinto the SNR through g. where the normalization ensures that E[tr{Φx}] = nT. We assume that thereceiver is aware of the channel realization, i.e. coherent reception.

It is worth mentioning that particularly in the context of a multiusersystem, this is a very significant assumption. In fact, obtaining accuratechannel knowledge for the K interfering users is in many cases the mostimportant impediment to the viability of most multiuser detectors [7, 9].However, it should be noted that channel estimation is considerably easierin a single user nT × nR antenna system than for a K user single-antennasystem. This is primarily due to difficulties in measuring K distributedchannels that are by definition at very low SINR and generally heavilydependent on coding; if the multiuser signals are not at low SINR thenthe system is either underloaded or the spreading factor is very small. Onthe other hand, it is considerably easier to coordinate high-fidelity multi-antenna channel estimation by using time-frequency-space orthogonal pilotpatterns at the transmitter [151, 52]. Therefore, the assumption of perfectchannel state information at the receiver is at least somewhat realistic in amultiantenna system.

In the next section we focus on multiantenna channel capacity as the ba-sic performance measure. The capacity provides the maximum fundamentallimit of error-free communication rate achievable by any scheme. For thefading channel, there are several capacity measures, relevant for differentscenarios. Two distinct scenarios provide particular insight:

• the slow fading channel (nonergodic channel), where the channel staysconstant (at a random value) over the entire time scale of communica-tion, e.g. for a packet-time.

• the fast fading channel (ergodic channel), where the channel variessignificantly over the time scale of communication.

In the slow fading channel, the key event of interest is outage: this isthe situation where the channel is so poor that no scheme can commu-nicate reliably at a certain target data rate. The largest rate for reliablecommunication at a certain outage probability is called the outage capacity ;a coding scheme that achieves the outage capacity is said to be universalsince it communicates reliably over all slow fading channels that are not inoutage.

In the fast fading channel, outages can be avoided due to the abilityto average over the time variations of the channel, e.g. with coding andinterleaving or adaptive modulation. In this case, the ergodic capacity isof interest. This is the maximum average rate at which arbitrarily reliable

communication is possible.

4. Multiantenna Capacity: Ergodic Regime

In this section, as well as in Section 5, we catalog and elaborate on a numberof result arisen in the multiantenna capacity literature. Specifically we ad-dress several results on the optimum input distribution and on the impact ofmodel features such as antenna correlation on multiantenna capacity. Par-ticular attention is given to the large-dimensional regime (as the numberof transmit and receive antennas go to infinity). In this section we focus onthe ergodic channels while in Section 5 we analyze the non-ergodic regime.Both sections, however, deal with coherent communication.

In the coherent regime, where the channel realization is available at thereceiver, if the input x in (2.1) is circularly symmetric complex Gaussian,the mutual information (in bits/s/Hz) conditioned on the channel matrixand on the input covariance is:

where I is the identity matrix. The formula (4.1) has been derived specifi-cally for multiantenna channels in [39, 127]. However previous appearancesof this celebrated log-determinant formula and its generalizations can befound in [103, 129, 17, 138, 30].

Most information-theoretic studies of multiantenna channels have fo-cused on the ergodic regime, in which during transmission, a long enoughcode word experiences essentially all states of the channel, and hence itaverages out the channel randomness. We defer until Section 5 the exami-nation of non-ergodic channels.

In the ergodic regime the fundamental operational limit is the ergodiccapacity which is given by the mutual information averaged over the fadingcoefficients i.e.

In order to achieve capacity, the input covariance Φ must be properlydetermined depending on the channel-state information (CSI) available tothe transmitter. In this respect, there are three main regimes of interest:

• The transmitter has full CSI, i.e., access to H instantaneously.• The transmitter has only statistical CSI, i.e., access to the distribution

of H but not to its realization.

• The transmitter has no CSI whatsoever.

4.0.1. Input Optimization and Capacity-Achieving TransceiverArchitectures

For the optimization of the input in each of the aforementioned regimes,it is convenient to decomposed this input covariance in its eigenvectorsand eigenvalues, Φ = VPV†. Each eigenvalue represents the (normalized)power allocated to the corresponding signalling eigenvector.

If the channel realization is known at the transmitter, the capacity isachieved with an input covariance whose eigenvector matrix, V, coincideswith that of H†H and whose eigenvalue matrix, P, is obtained via a waterfillprocess on the eigenvalues of H†H, thus the resulting jth diagonal entry ofP is:

Instantaneous CSI at the transmitter is an operational regime that ap-plies, for example, to fixed wireless access systems (backhaul, local loop,broadband residential) and to low-mobility systems (local-area networks,pedestrians). This regime is particularly appealing whenever uplink anddownlink are reciprocal (time-duplexed systems) [31].

The waterfill policy devised by Shannon, in its original frequency-domain waterfill approach [115], has been formalized in the 1960s [129]for deterministic matrix channels and later rederived by several authors inthe 1990s, specifically for multiantenna communication [105, 127].

Depending on the time horizon over which the power is allowed to beaveraged and the temporal dynamics of the problem, several solutions havebeen obtained for the power assigned to each channel realization:

• Temporal waterfill [47, 12].• Dynamic programming [98].

The exact same techniques can be used if the variability takes place alongthe frequency (rather than time) axis.

With full CSI at the transmitter the capacity-achieving transceiver ar-chitecture follows naturally from the input optimization. Information bitsare split into t = min{nT, nR} parallel streams, each coded separately, andthen enlarged by nT − t streams of zeros. The symbols across the streams

form the input vector s = [s1, . . . , snT ]T which is rotated into the directionscorresponding to the right singular vectors of the channel matrix H. Thepower allocated to each stream is time-dependent and is given by (4.3), andthe rates are dynamically allocated accordingly. At the receiver, the left sin-gular vectors of the channel matrix H are used for reception. Specificallythe output is post-multiplied by the matrix of left singular vectors of Hto extract the independent streams, which are then separately decoded. Ifan AWGN capacity-achieving code is used for each stream, then the entiresystem will be capacity-achieving for the MIMO channel.

While with full CSI at the transmitter the coordinate system inwhich the independent data streams are multiplexed, is obviously channel-dependent, with only statistical CSI available at the transmitter, in orderto achieve capacity the choice of this coordinate system has to be fixed apriori and should be set, for several important classes of channels (Rayleighfading with certain correlation structures and uncorrelated Ricean fading),to coincide with the eigenvectors of E[H†H]. (Note that, the aforementionedprinciple fails to hold in general [2]). The capacity-achieving power alloca-tion, P, can be, instead, found iteratively [132]. This architecture, known inthe literature as V-BLAST [39, 40], consists of a space-time encoder that ateach use of the channel outputs a set of independent unit-variance Gaussiansymbols, s1, . . . , snT , each of which, before being simultaneously radiatedout of the nT transmit antennas, is assigned a certain transmit power,{P1, . . . ,PnT} (which may be zero) and rotated into the directions of V.

The earliest statement on the optimization of the input covariance sta-tistical CSI available at the transmitter can be found in [127] where it wasshown that, for channel matrices with zero-mean IID (independent identi-cally distributed) Gaussian entries, the capacity-achieving input is isotropic.For the region of low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR ), a complete characteriza-tion of the limiting covariance, valid for arbitrary channels, was providedin [140]. Posterior findings on the eigenvectors of the capacity-achievinginput covariance can be found in [143, 60, 109, 79, 66] for correlated multi-antennachannels with zero-mean Gaussian entries and in [143, 137, 57] forchannels with IID Gaussian entries with arbitrary mean. In every case, theeigenvalues were left to numerical optimizationa. A complete characteri-zation of capacity-achieving input covariance has been addressed in [134]:introducing a general channel model, [134] unifies all previous various re-

Because of the unitary-independent-unitary structure of (4.4), thismodel is refered to as the UIU model [133]. The UIU framework encom-passes most of the zero-mean channel models that have been treated inthe multiantenna literature (canonical model [38, 127], separable correla-tion model [118, 24, 102], polarization diversity and/or pattern diversity[80, 11, 124], virtual representation [111] etc.) and it is advocated and ex-perimentally supported in [100, 146].

A notable exception that falls outside the representation in (4.4) is thatof the keyhole (or pinhole) channel, where H = cRc†T with cR and cT beingrandom column vectors. In the hypothesis that cR and cT have independentrandom entries whose distribution is symmetric with respect to zero, the

capacity-achieving input covariance for this channel is diagonal (i.e V = I)[134].

With no CSI, the most reasonable strategy is to transmit an isotropicsignal (Φ = I) [101, 145]. In fact, because of its simplicity and because manyspace-time coding schemes conform to it, this strategy may be appealingeven if some degree of CSI is available.

Having analyzed the transceiver architectures that achieve the capacityin the fast fading scenario, we now shift our focus towards the study ofthe ergodic capacity for various channel models of interest. In particularwe start with the very simple canonical model and proceed beyond it ontothe so-called separable correlation model able to account for correlationsbetween antennas at both transmitter and receiver.b

Note that the characterization of the capacity can be mathematically in-volved when correlations between channel entries are allowed and for somechannel models the capacity becomes analytically tractable only as thesignal-to-noise ratio (SNR ) approaches zero or infinity or else in the large-dimensional regime (as nT and nR go to infinity). Fortunately, the numberof antennas required for the asymptotics to be closely approached are usu-ally very small and therefore the expressions derived therein are valid almostuniversally.

Accordingly, in the next sections we seek to characterize the ergodiccapacity of several channels of interest in coherent regime with and with-out CSI at the transmitter asymptotically in the number of antennas forarbitrary SNR , and for arbitrary numbers of antennas when it is possible.

4.1. Random Matrix Theory

Asymptotic analyses (as nT and nR go to infinity with a constant ratio)of the fundamental limits of wireless communication channels provide valu-able engineering insights and are often feasible using results in randommatrix theory [135]. Thus before embarking on the study of capacity ofseveral channel models, it is worth reviewing some definitions and resultson random matrix theory from [135] that will be useful in the sequel.

For our purposes, it is advantageous to make use of the η-transform andthe Shannon transform, which were motivated by the application of ran-dom matrix theory to various problems in the information theory of noisycommunication channels [135]. 4.2. Canonical Model (I.I.D. Channel)

The earliest works by [38, 127] started with the canonical model where theentries of the channel matrix H are modelled as independent identicallydistributed zero-mean complex Gaussian random variables (all antennasare assumed be co-polarized).

This model, that describe with extremely accuracy linear array, where thediversity is based only on antenna spacing, has also evidenced some limita-tions. In fact the separable correlation model usually suffices to represent

the correlation that arises with spatial diversity, due to antenna proximity;however it does not accommodate, for instance, other diversity mechanismthat are becoming increasingly popular such as polarization [80, 124, 11, 88]and patter diversity or some pathological phenomena like keyhole and pin-hole [25, 43]. A more richer model, able to encompass a broader range ofchannel structures, is the UIU-model (cf. [133]) illustrated in (4.4), wherethe channel matrix H is modelled as a complex Gaussian matrix and thecorrelation between the (i, j) and (i′, j′) entries of H is, in general, jointfunction of (i, j, i′, j′). Results on the ergodic capacity of this very generalmodel can be found in [133, 135].

5. Multiantenna Capacity: Non-Ergodic Regime

We now turn our attention to the slow fading MIMO channel. In the non-ergodic regime, where the fading is not such that the statistics of the channelare revealed to the receiver during the span of a codeword, a more suitableperformance measure is the outage capacity, which coincides with the clas-sical Shannon-theoretic notion of ε-capacity [32], namely the maximal ratefor which block error probability ε is attainable. Denoting by I the input-output mutual information (conditioned on the channel realization) i.e:

under certain conditions, the outage capacity can be obtained through theprobability that I (whose distribution is induced by H) falls below thetransmission rate R [39, 127, 13]:

In order to maximizes the rate supported at some chosen outage level,the input covariance, Φ, must be properly determined depending on theSNR level and on distribution of I. At very low SNR relative to the targetrate, it is optimal to use just one transmit antenna [140]. For arbitrary SNR,establishing Φ is a problem not easily tackled analytically. Some results onthe eigenvectors of Φ can be found in [119]. A long-standing conjecture isthat the optimal strategy is to restrict to a subset of the antennas and thentransmit isotropically among the antennas used: the lower the SNR levelrelative to the target rate, the smaller the number of antennas used. Attypical outage probability levels, the SNR is high relative to the target rateand it is expected that using all the antennas is a good strategy.

Concerning the distribution of I, for nR = 1, distribution of I has beenfound for correlated Rayleigh-faded channels in [96, 65] and for uncorre-

As the number of antennas grows, the distribution of I for many of themultiantennachannels of interest, it can be approximated to a Gaussiandistribution. In the engineering literature, two distinct approaches havebeen followed in order to explore this property:

(1) The mean and variance of I are obtained through the moment gener-ating function (for fixed number of antennas). A Gaussian distributionwith such mean and variance is then compared, through Monte Carlosimulation, to the empirical distribution of I.

(2) The random variable

Following the first approach, the computation of mean and variance ofthe mutual information of the canonical channel (i.i.d. zero-mean Gaussianentries) was carried out in [123, 144, 15], which laid out numerical evidenceof an excellent Gaussian fit. These results were extended to Ricean fadingin [70] and to correlated antennas (at the array with the most antennas) in[122]. Although, in every case, the match is excellent, no proof of asymptoticGaussianity is provided. Only for SNR →∞ with Φ = I and with H beinga real Gaussian matrix with i.i.d. entries has it been shown that I − E[I]converges to a Gaussian random variable [45].

6. Receiver Architectures and Performance

In this section we turn our attention to practical MIMO receiver struc-tures. As mentioned previously, the MIMO channel model is intimatelyrelated to the multiuser CDMA model, and as such, the same fundamentalapproaches to receiver design can be taken. The main practical receiverswhich have been proposed and studied include zero-forcing (ZF), minimummean-squared error (MMSE), and successive interference cancelation (SIC)receivers, as well as suboptimal approaches to maximum likelihood (ML)detectors.

Of course, since the statistics of the MIMO channel differ from thestatistics of the equivalent CDMA matrix of spreading signature vectors,the respective receiver performances will also differ (as was the case forcapacity, discussed in the previous section). While many of the analysistechniques can be carried over from CDMA receiver analysis, it is impor-tant to note that for practical MIMO applications the comparatively smallsystem dimensionality means that it is not always appropriate to do so. Forexample, typical MIMO systems will have 2–4 antennas, compared withthe length of CDMA spreading codes which are usually orders of mag-nitude greater. The main implication is that for MIMO we seek explicitfinite-dimensional analysis results. This contrasts with much of the CDMAperformance analysis which is based on asymptotic techniques (as discussedin detail in Chapters **PeacockCollingsHonig** and **GuoTanaka**). Thelarge-system asymptotic approach provides very good approximations forCDMA, since the spreading codes are long, and it often results in simpleexpressions yielding practical insights. As such, exact finite-dimensionalanalysis has been largely avoided for CDMA systems; partly also due to itsdifficulty, especially since the practical spreading codes are discrete. In con-trast, for MIMO the channel matrix is Gaussian, and for these matrices anumber of important finite-dimensional statistical techniques are available.

In this section we will present results for three important performancemetrics for the practical linear ZF and MMSE receivers; namely SNR/SINRdistribution, capacity, and symbol error rates (SER). We will considerequal-power spatial multiplexing transmission, and assume that the channelis estimated perfectly at the receiver.

6.1. Linear Receivers

Within the context of MIMO, the task of the linear receiver is to provide anestimate for each of the multiple transmitted symbols by performing only

7. Multiuser Multiantenna Systems

Although this chapter has focused on single user multiantenna systems, itcan be readily pointed out that all wireless systems are at least in some senseinherently multiuser : at the outset they must share bandwidth resourceswith all other wireless devices, and more specifically any deployed systemgenerally must serve a number of users in overlapping geographic areas.Therefore the question is not whether the system is multiuser or singleuser, but rather how the multiple users are accommodated. In this sense,the single user model explored thus far in this chapter can be viewed asthe scenario where a higher layer networking protocol has allocated thechannel and the entire transmit and receive antenna array to a single userfor a certain period of time.

The single user model, which is implicitly TDMA/FDMA, immediatelyraises other questions. Why shouldn’t users share resources in the spa-tial domain in addition to the time-frequency domain? What about theinterference from users who are allocated the same time-frequency slot inneighboring cells or systems? In this section of the chapter, we explore thesequestions, and in particular consider interference precancellation techniquesthat are conceptually like doing multiuser detection at the transmitter.

We begin by observing that the two scenarios we have just mentioned– same-cell cooperation and other-cell interference – have quite differentcharacteristics, as shown for a hypothetical downlink MIMO system in Fig.6. In the case of same-cell cooperation and interference, there are severaloptions. First and most simply, a scheduler can restrict each base stationto serve a single mobile station (MS) at any point in time. This is thedominant approach in current and emerging wireless broadband standards.Second, the base station can apply sophisticated pre-cancellation algorithmsin order to allow each MS to receive it’s desired signal with straightforwardsignal processing. These multiuser precoding techniques typically requirethe base station to know the data and channels to each user. The thirdoption is for the base station to simply share the total of nT data streamsamong the multiple users at the same time, leaving the spatial interferencecancellation to the MSs.

Other-cell interference poses additional problems. All well-designed cel-lular systems are by nature interference-limited: if they were not, it wouldbe possible to increase the spectral efficiency by lowering the frequencyreuse or increasing the average loading per cell. Therefore, MIMO systemswill operate at a delicate balancing point: most of the gains promised by

spatial multiplexing are at high SINR (15 dB and up), yet most cellularusers in today’s systems experience low SINR. In fact, a significant per-centage get an SINR below 3 dB due to aggressive frequency reuse. There-fore, this type of multiuser interference is very important, regardless ofthe adopted approach for same-cell interference suppression. We overviewemerging methods for managing other-cell interference in Section 7.2: thebetter of these techniques rely in essence on cooperation between spatiallydispersed transmitters.

7.1. Same-Cell Interference and Cooperation

As we noted above there are three principle approaches to managing same-cell interference in the spatial domain. First, the network can circumventthe interference problem with an orthogonal allocation of time-frequencyresources so that within each cell, communication takes the form of singleuser MIMO. This is the simplest and most common approach, but sub-optimal. The third approach mentioned above is interference cancellationin downlink, where streams are simply transmitted to each user with theburden on the receiver to decode them. This is not expected to be a viableapproach, particularly in the downlink, since it requires each MS to have onthe order of nT sufficiently uncorrelated receive antennas and a tolerance forconsiderable computational complexity. On the other hand, receiver multi-user interference cancellation for K mobile stations is theoretically possiblein the uplink if the base station has at least KN antennas, where each MS

transmits N data streams. The most attractive and interesting option isto use precoding at the base station transmitter in order to allow multipleusers to be serviced simultaneously.

7.1.1. Downlink: precoding

In the downlink, we assume that the number of base station antennas isnT ≥ nR, where for simplicity of notation each mobile has nR receive anten-nas. From straightforward linear algebra arguments, MIMO receivers areable to decode parallel data streams by suppressing the spatial interferencebetween the signals sent from the nT transmit antennas (using linear signalprocessing techniques), as long as the number of receive antennas nR ≥ nT.Therefore, a K user MIMO system appears to require nR ≥ KnT receiveantennas in order to fully suppress OCI (with a linear receiver). However,instead it is possible to view a K user system as having KnR receive an-tennas, and so as long as KnR ≥ nT, an encoding scheme is possible thatwill allow each unit to decode their desired nR streams of data. The keydistinction from the normal single user model is that each set of nR anten-nas is not allowed to cooperate in the decoding process with the other sets,since they are geographically dispersed.

To be concrete, the multiuser MIMO model is similar to before

but now y is a KnR vector while x is still nT×1. Furthermore, each receiveronly has access to a subset of size nR of y. What we will consider now ishow to best design x at the base station, in order to make this task possiblefor the distributed receivers.

Dirty Paper Coding. From an information theory standpoint, the op-timal approach to this multiuser problem is to adapt the so-called “dirty pa-per coding” of Costa [29] to the MIMO interference channel. The philosophyof this technique is to construct codewords for each user that use the spa-tial interference due to the other users to each user’s advantage. In practice,such an approach would require non-causal knowledge of the channels toeach user, and a prohibitive successive encoding process [18, 142, 153]. Likemany breakthroughs in information theory, although the optimal scheme isimpractical, it provides insight and an upper bound to what is possible.

Block Diagonalization. A natural alternative approach is to design alinear precoder that suppresses the interference from concurrent transmis-

sions, in a manner similar to linear multiuser detection performed at thetransmitter. In this case the base station transmits to K users simultane-ously. For simplicity each user has n

Performance Comparison. In Fig. 7 from [116], we compare the ca-pacity of DPC, block diagonalization, and the conventional TDMA ap-proach. Clearly, block diagonalization is an attractive approach, since itapproaches the DPC bound, while requiring only linear processing. Thecapacity gain vs. a time-sharing approach is very significant. Since it isexpected that the number of antennas on a base station can be quite abit larger than what is possible on an MS, an approach like BD appearsto be quite attractive in practice, assuming that suitable channel stateinformation can be provided to the transmitter for each of the K users.Limited feedback techniques such as those developed for single user MIMOsystems [84, 83] have been extended to multiuser MIMO systems [58, 152],

with the conclusion that multiuser precoding does not necessitate a pro-hibitive amount of feedback.

7.1.2. Uplink: interference cancellation

In the uplink, spatial interference cancellation even for multiple users can beperformed by the base station. Naturally, the performance decreases fairlyrapidly when nR < KnT, where nR is now the size of the base station’sreceive antenna array and each MS sends nT streams of data. Conceptually,once the K users are selected for transmission the problem is no differentthan a KnT×nR single user MIMO system, with the following differences.First, the channel gain matrix H and its correlation matrix E[HH†] willchange since uplink users often have very different channel gains due tolarge differences in path loss and shadowing, and naturally antennas on thesame MS would have a fair amount of correlation while antennas on differ-ent mobiles would have none. Second, for the simpler spatial multiplexingscenarios, each mobile would encode its nT streams independently and so

stream rotation techniques such as that used in D-BLAST would not bepossible, or more generally, cooperative precoding among the KnT trans-mit elements (for example, for precoding) becomes more difficult. Overallhowever, the signal processing involved is substantially similar to the singleuser MIMO channel so further discussion of multiuser uplink interferencecancellation designs is deferred here.

7.2. Other-Cell Interference and Cooperation

In contrast to the single user MIMO scenario, cellular MIMO systems aresubject to a large amount of interference. Particularly near the cell edgesin a downlink system with aggressive frequency reuse patterns, the totalamount of interference dictates operating points below 5dB or even 0dB

SINR. As the number of interfering sources increases, it is not typicallypossible to suppress all the OCI with spatial signal processing, and insteadthe interference is generally treated as noise. As the number of interferingsources becomes large, the interference becomes increasingly Gaussian dueto the Central Limit Theorem, which is worst case according to informationtheory. In view of this, it is not surprising that recent research on spatialmultiplexing in cellular systems has shown that adding additional datastreams at the base station can actually decrease the throughput owing tothe increased dimensionality of spatial interference [16, 19]. Instead, at lowSINR, higher capacity is achieved by focusing power on the best eigenvalue(s)in the channel matrix. Therefore, if spatial multiplexing is to be viable ina cellular system, new means for increasing the SINR to active users need tobe developed.

Base station cooperation holds considerable promise as a means of man-aging (or suppressing) other-cell interference. This implies that the base sta-tions are networked together, and can share information with each other.Communication between base stations already occurs in practice to coor-dinate handoffs and other network-level operations; additional cooperativeoperations can result in increased system capacity. Naturally, the amountof cooperation has to be balanced against the gain it provides.

7.2.1. Joint Encoding

One possibility is to extend to the multiuser precoding techniques of Section7.1 to the cellular scenario [114, 59]. If the received interference signals areknown to each base station, then each base station can form part of amacroscopic MIMO array, sometimes called a “super base station”. For

example, if each base station has nT antennas, and L of them cooperate,then at least in theory, this can be viewed as a single base station with LnT

antennas. From such a viewpoint, the same mathematical theory of blockdiagonalization from the previous section can be applied, with however thesignificant following changes.

First, each set of nT antennas has its own transmit power constraint.Second, the base stations now have to be able to share both channel stateand user data information and collaboratively decide which subset of usersto transmit at each time instance. In addition to the obvious strain onthe back-end network, this imposes the requirement that the base stationsbe precisely synchronized and capable of real-time information exchange.Third, the signals to each user will usually become extremely unbalanced,since each set of nT antennas is geographically isolated. Typically, only twoor at most three of the L base stations can be heard by each user, while theother base stations will be close to the noise floor. This further complicatesthe encoding process for each user.

7.2.2. Base Station Cooperative Scheduling

Since the aforementioned challenges are fairly daunting, a simpler approachis to allow the base stations to simply take turns transmitting, or to sched-ule transmissions in a way that causes minimal interference to other users.Recent work, e.g. [27, 154, 41], has investigated the possibility of neighbor-ing base stations scheduling their transmissions in a cooperative fashion.This is a generalization of the concept of spatial frequency reuse, wheresimple intercell coordination is used to select appropriate users on a systemwide level for each time slot. For example, two base stations should not si-multaneously transmit at full power to mobile stations on their mutual cellboundaries. On the contrary, it would be desirable to transmit to a near-inuser in one cell, and a cell-edge user in an adjacent cell [149, 64].

To make this concept more concrete, consider two classes of users: celledge users (exterior) and users close to the base station (interior). Basestations could then alternate between transmitting to their interior andexterior users, with the two most significant neighboring two base stationsalternating on opposite time slots. Because of the path gain differencesbetween the interior and exterior classes, the achievable rates at each time

The keypoint is that this scheme, known as “cell breathing”, provides a frameworkachieving acceptable SINR to both interior and exterior users since β � α.This could also allow spatial multiplexing techniques to be deployed ina cellular system, since these require higher SINR, as previously noted. Inreality, it is likely that while interior users will be able to make use ofspatial multiplexing, exterior users will likely have to be more conservativein their use of MIMO techniques. The next section describes how a MIMOsystem can adaptively select the mode of operation for the different usersdepending on their SINR conditions.

8. Diversity-Multiplexing Tradeoffs and Spatial Adaptation

In this section we turn our attention to the roles of diversity and multiplex-ing in a MIMO communication channel. It turns out that this discussionis one of the departure points between MIMO communication and jointdetection. It is important, however, as it provides insight into MIMO com-munication link engineering.

Thus far the role of MIMO in this chapter has been a source of increasedspectral efficiency without bandwidth or power enhancement. This can beachieved in many cases by sending independent data streams over eachtransmit antenna and thus is known as the spatial multiplexing mode ofoperation. Antennas, though, can play other roles in wireless communica-tion: they can be a source of diversity to mitigate fading. Space-time codescan take advantage of the diversity from multiple transmit antennas whiletechniques such as maximum ratio combining can exploit the diversity frommultiple receive antennas. MIMO communication links using spatial multi-plexing also benefit from diversity. For example, in Section 6 the diversityorder of spatial multiplexing with a zero forcing receiver was shown to benR − nT + 1 for the case nR ≥ nT. Maximizing diversity requires nT = 1but this would not be a MIMO system since it only has one transmit an-tenna. Maximizing the number of streams would result in nR = nT but theresulting diversity gain would be 1 (the lowest possible). Clearly there aresome tradeoffs between the multiplexing rate and the diversity gain.

In this section we will present results on diversity and multiplexingtradeoffs from two perspectives. First, we will summarize some theoreticalresults on the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff curve. These results provide acertain perspective on robust system operation with minimal channel stateinformation required at the transmitter. Second, we will discuss spatialadaptation through diversity-multiplexing switching. The idea is to switchbetween different possible transmit configurations based on transmit chan-nel state information. This approach varies the number of transmit streamsbut maximizes the diversity order even with ZF receivers.

8.1. Diversity-Multiplexing Tradeoff

The diversity-multiplexing tradeoff from a rate-distortion perspective wasdeveloped by Zheng and Tse [156]. For a space-time coding scheme a diver-sity gain d(r) is said to be achieved at multiplexing rate r if the data ratescales as R = r log SNR while the error probability scales as pe ≈ SNR

The diversity-multiplexing tradeoff curve has been computed for manydifferent space-time coding schemes and the optimum tradeoff curve hasbeen calculated in some cases, notably for i.i.d. Rayleigh fading channels. Tounderstand the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff curve, it is prudent to studyan example. We consider Rayleigh fading channels with nT = nR = 2. Forthis case, spatial multiplexing with an ML receiver achieves dsm(r) = 2− r

for r ∈ [0, 2]. The Alamouti space-time code [3] achieves da(r) = 4 − 4r

for r ∈ [0, 4]. The optimum tradeoff curve is the piecewise linear curveconnecting points defined by (0, 4), (1, 1), and (2, 0). The curve is illustratedin Fig. 8. First consider the multiplexing and Alamouti curves. As intuitionwould suggest, for higher data rates, multiplexing is optimum while forlarger diversity requirements the Alamouti code is appropriate. Somethingthat is somewhat less intuitive though is this fact: the two curves cross atr = 2/3. This means that spatial multiplexing is optimum at least part ofthe time for r < 1, which is where the Alamouti code should be better.This can be explained by noting that while spatial multiplexing overlapswith the optimum tradeoff curve for a piece, the Alamouti code does not.This means that there are other coding approaches that can improve onAlamouti, in terms of the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff.

The optimum tradeoff for Rayleigh fading channels was found to be the

piecewise linear curve connecting points defined by (k, (nT − k)(nR − k))for k = 0, 1, . . . ,min(nT, nR) [156]. Spatial multiplexing is always optimumfor the last piece, from rates r ∈ [min(nT, nR)− 1,min(nT, nR)]. Recently,space-time codes have been developed that can achieve other portions ofthe curve. Well known examples include the Golden code [10] and cyclic-division-algebra based codes [35]. These codes generally increase perfor-mance at the expense of additional receiver complexity.

To summarize, the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff curve provides someinsight into the relationship between rate and diversity for large SNR . Itjustifies the use of spatial multiplexing for high rates and motivated thediscovery of tradeoff-optimal space-time codes to fill in the gaps at otherrates.

8.2. Mode Adaptation: Switching Between Diversity and

Multiplexing

While the tradeoff curve is useful, it does not capture all the leverage fromdiversity and multiplexing in practical systems. One important omission isthat it applies only for large SNR . For example, it is known that beamformingwith a single vector is optimal at low SNR (from waterfilling) yet this insightis not captured in the tradeoff curve. Another dimension not included isspace-time adaptation. The tradeoff curve assumes that the same space-time code family is used for all channel realizations. Practically though,the rate or space-time code may change as the channel changes thanks tochannel state information at the transmitter [20]. These limitations makethe tradeoff curve less useful in the design of practical MIMO links withsome spatial adaptation (like WiMax for example [8]).

Including the possibility of adapting between diversity and multiplexingmodes of operation exposes the importance of this capability. This conceptwas first proposed by Heath and Paulraj who addressed switching betweenthe Alamouti space-time code and spatial multiplexing [54]. This conceptcan be generalized by allowing the transmitter to send a different number ofdata streams, or modes, based on the channel state [82]. Intuitively, whenthe channel is full rank spatial multiplexing is used, while when it is lowrank some form of beamforming on the dominant eigenmodes is preferred.

To illustrate the concept of spatial adaptation and its advantages, con-sider nT = nR and a Rayleigh fading channel. Suppose that the transmittercan use either equal power allocation and spatial multiplexing with a zeroforcing receiver or transmit beamforming. Spatial multiplexing with a zero

forcing receiver was studied in 6. With transmit beamforming, the receiverobserves

Beamforming only uses the dominant right singular vector of H and thusintuitively is only a good idea if H is low rank. Clearly r = 1 for transmitbeamforming and r = nT for spatial multiplexing. In terms of diversity,transmit beamforming and receive combining obtains d = nTnR while spa-tial multiplexing achieves only d = 1 from (6.20).

To make the comparison fair, assume that the constellations with eachapproach are chosen such that the total spectral efficiency is the same.Thus if spatial multiplexing sends 2 bits on each of nT streams then trans-mit beamforming would need to send 2nT bits per symbol to keep thesame spectral efficiency. Consider an adaptive algorithm that chooses theapproach that has the lowest probability of error for a given channel re-alization. Since transmit beamforming obtains a diversity of nTnR (themaximum achievable), then this algorithm also obtains a diversity order of

nTnR, no matter the size of nT! The implication of this result is illustratedin Fig. 9 for nT = nR = 4. The adaptive curve enjoys a huge performanceimprovement over spatial multiplexing and some improvement over beam-forming. For reference, note that with an optimum ML receiver, spatialmultiplexing would obtain d = nR. Thus spatial adaptation provides morediversity than spatial multiplexing alone (with the best receiver) and haslow complexity.

There are many other studies of diversity-multiplexing switching andspace-time adaptation. Combining with antenna subset selection [53] orlimited feedback [82] shows that these benefits can be achieved with aslittle as log2 nT bits of feedback per channel realization. Spatial adapta-tion has also been combined with adaptive modulation to form space-timeadaptive modulation [37]. In such a configuration, both the modulation /coding scheme and the space-time transmission scheme are varied with theobjective of maximizing the rate at a given SNR.

To summarize, by adapting between diversity and multiplexing schemesbased on channel state information it is possible to achieve full diversity ofd = nTnR and a maximum rate of min(nT, nR) in practical systems withlow complexity feedback.

9. Conclusions

This chapter has intended to provide an overview of state-of-the-art MIMOcommunications from three complementary perspectives, all of which par-allel multiuser detectors in some distinctive ways, while diverging in others.First, we overviewed recent results on the fundamental information theo-retic limits of MIMO channels, characterized by the ergodic and outagecapacity, for fast-varying and slow-varying channels, respectively. The keyresults diverge from multiuser detection primarily due to (i) the differ-ent structure of the signature matrix, which is (approximately) complexGaussian for MIMO, but generally discrete in CDMA, and (ii) the abilityof the transmitter to jointly encode the transmit vectors.

Next, we summarized key results on the error-rate performance of prac-tical (linear) receiver architectures. In this section, the connection to multi-user detection is the most concrete, with clear parallels between the zero-forcing and MMSE receivers for MIMO channels and CDMA systems.

Finally, we discussed the important system-level considerations forMIMO systems, namely how to simultaneously accommodate multiple usersand how to tradeoff between MIMO’s diversity and multiplexing benefits.

Although CDMA systems are relatively robust to low SINR by design, theperformance of MIMO systems is very sensitive to SINR. We overviewedrecently proposed techniques for controlling performance in challenging en-vironments, namely through base station cooperation and MIMO modeadaptation.
