Rotary Mississauga Rotaract Mississauga
The Rotary Club of Mississauga sponsors two Rotaract Clubs; the community-based Rota-ract Club of Mississauga and Rotaract UTM (University of Toronto Mississauga Campus).
Both are service clubs for young professionals and students, ages 18 to 30. Rotaract is a non-profit international and community volunteer service and professional development organization. Our clubs provide young adults with opportunities to meet new people in the community, foster leadership and responsible citizenship, and to promote international peace and understanding.
What do Rotaract Clubs do?
Rotaract Mississauga believes in the motto “Service Above Self” and is committed to making a difference locally and internationally through service projects, such as building schools and feeding the homeless. We are active in the community helping out with local charity events like soup kitchens, and assisting with fundraising events such as at Lobsterfest and Ribfest. We also organize and manage our own social and service activities from Halloween parties to going to Theatre in the Park.
The Rotaract Club of Mississauga has general meetings every other week, to plan the upcom-ing events, find out what the needs are within the community and internationally and keep in touch with what the club is doing.
Why should I get involved?
There are many things Rotaract has to offer. Some of the main things you can expect to gain from becoming a Rotaractor include:
• Having loads of fun while making new friendships that last a lifetime. • Networking with other young professionals in the community. • The satisfaction of knowing that you can make a difference, in the local community and
overseas. • The opportunity to refine your leadership and public speaking skills by becoming an
Executive of the club or organizing a project. • Pushing yourself to the limit and realizing your potential in both personal and profes-
sional areas of life. • Getting a head start to future membership in Rotary.• Networking with over 2 million members of the Rotary family around the world
How do I join in?
Check out www.rotaractmississauga.com to find out more about what we have been doing and what events we have on. You can come to the general meetings (see the website for details) or contact [email protected] if you are interested in any events or have any questions.

Rotaract Clubs Assembled by: Rotarian, Mark Cashin
The Camp Enterprise concept was developed by the Rotary Club of Columbus, Ohio based on a program conceived by the American Management Association
and has been developed and used by Rotary Clubs throughout Canada and the USA.
In 1994, the Rotary Clubs of Mississauga formed an organizing committee to pro-duce the Mississauga Camp Enterprise. Since then, each year eighty Grade 11 and 12 students from Mississauga high schools are selected to attend this 3-1/2 day live-in, activity-packed, business-oriented workshop at the University of Toronto, Missis-sauga Campus.
The program includes inspirational speakers, panel discussion, workshops, creativity sessions, business games, presentation skills and an introduction to the professions and career opportunities facing young people. There are team-building events and the opportunity to meet other students and have some social fun.
The adult participants are all Rotary Club members and many of the key speak-ers are from outside the Rotary organization, but all participate on a voluntary, unpaid basis.
What’s in it for you?
• Break out of the high school box – Learn team-building skills!
• Build your own business – Cooperate with other talented students in a supportive team setting!
• Be proactive about your future – Participate in activities that will enhance your skills!
• Best of all – All expenses are covered by the Rotary Clubs of Mississauga!
What is the objective of Camp Enterprise?
The objective of the Camp Enterprise program is to expose, to explore, to chal-lenge, to arouse interest and to spur students on the whole subject of business and private enterprise.
The program provides students with an introduction to professional, business owner and management careers through 3-1/2 days of exposure to the private enterprise system, the art of negotiation skills, insights into business concepts and the oppor-tunity to have face-to-face discussions with business leaders.

Oscar Peterson - Paul Harris Fellow
This was a night to remember as fellow Rotarians joined District Governor Bernd Dinnert on Tuesday, November 23rd at the Mississauga Golf and Country
Club, for the presentation of a Paul Harris Fellow (the highest award in Rotary) to the late Oscar Peterson (pre-sented to his wife, Kelly Peterson). Oscar Peterson was a Canadian jazz pianist and composer. He was considered to have been one of the greatest jazz pianists of all times. He played thousands of live concerts to audiences worldwide in his career that spanned over 65 years. Numerous guests attended, such as Wilfrid J. Wilkinson, Rotary International President; James Green, Rotary Governor for District 5490; the Rotary Club of Mississauga West, and of course, Celine Peterson, daughter of the late Oscar Peterson. Musicians that had played with Oscar Peterson were also in atten-dance, and gave an outstanding performance as they played for the guests.

"Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for au-thority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict
their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers."
— Socrates
The constant complaint of the older generation is that the younger generation lacks the respect and discipline of the days gone by.
But that is not the case in Mississauga. There is a group that is doing impressive community work - Interact (12-18year olds). These stu-dents, under the umbrella of the Rotary club, have a growing enrol-ment and can plan a serious community service project.
T.L. Kennedy Secondary School’s Interact group has many students that have gone above and beyond the 40 hours of community service. Some have reached over 100 hours. These students, lead by teacher supervisors, Amar Nirwal and Adrian D’souza, have organized food drives, set up lights at the Festival of Lights, and supervised three days of bouncy castle mayhem at Rib fest. These students have the organization and initiative to make a difference in Mississauga.
St. Jude’s Academy’s Interact started only last April, and with 19 members, raised $500 for an all girl’s school in Afghanistan. They came up with a plan that involved selling popcorn, doing a car wash and a pie in the teacher’s face event.
Interact is a great program in order to get students involved in community service, while having a good time. If you have any inquires about Interact please visit the Rotary website at www.rotary.org/EN/STUDENTSANDYOUTH/, or email Aaron Sawatsky at [email protected]. Rotary is looking to start new clubs in middle & high schools in Mississauga.

“‘Star Light, Star Bright’ tree lighting evening”
Mississauga Tree Lighting
Mississauga residents wrapped up warm and headed down to the Living Arts centre to enjoy this year’s Mississauga
Tree Lighting Ceremony. It may have been a chilly evening, but the crowd didn’t seem to notice as they were dazzled by a Star Light Cirque Spectacular, and grooved to a Motown Holiday Show. Mississauga residents warmly welcomed Mayor Hazel McCallion, MP’s and MPP’s, Rotarians and, of course, Santa himself, to conduct the offi-cial tree lighting. There were a total of 118 trees decorated by the Rotary Club of Mississauga, using approx 80,000 lights.
