From the Senior Minister
What Makes UCE Thrive and You Come Alive? That's the question I and ourTrustees want to know--andhope to find out--in ourupcoming all-congregationworkshop on Oct. 18. We are not a faith traditionbound together by creed orcentralized beliefs. Instead, we are a peoplebound together by common values andaspirations. As an example, the UnitarianUniversalist Association's Seven Principles aresome values shared by UU congregationsthroughout North America. However, for us to stay true to our congregationalroots, what matters for us are our locally heldvalues at the Unitarian Church of Evanston.Certainly there will be overlap betweencongregations, but our leaders to know where toshine our beacon of light into the world-and howbright you want it to shine. Our workshop in October hopes to accomplishthis. Read More.

The concept of covenant is rooted in the promisesof love that we make to one another - not to acreed, not to a divine being, but to the people whowalk beside us on a spiritual path. The prophetAmos asked "Can two walk together except theybe agreed?" Liberal religion answers "yes,"because humans over time are rarely in totalagreement. Our way of creating community andchange despite our disagreements is rooted inthe practice of covenant, and is how we are apeople of promise. Rev. Bret Lortie speaking.
Sunday, September 21, 9 and 11am"Trusting the Promise"The poet John O'Donohue exhorts: "Unfurlyourself into the grace of beginning that is at onewith your life's desire." How can we trust--andfulfill--the promise that the world offers us? Whatpromises do we make to ourselves as we riskstepping onto new ground? Rev. Connie Grantspeaking. Sunday, September 28, 9 and 11am"The Art of Forgiveness"The High Holy Days of the Jewish calendarremind us that our communal religious lives existbetween the promise of covenant and thenecessity of forgiveness. The 10 days betweenRosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (9/24-10/4) arean invitation to practice Teshuvah, which meansboth "to return" to our promises and commitmentsas well as, in the words of Rabbi David Hartman,"to liberate oneself from the failures of the pastand demonstrate that the laws of psychologicaldeterminism need not control human destiny."Rev. Bret Lortie speaking.
