Health Ministry News 2015-2016 Influenza Season
Facts: Influenza is a respiratory illness. Symptoms include high fever, body aches, headache, and cough.
Influenza epidemics occur every year. Outbreaks occur early October and run through May. Flu season peaks December through February. Influenza Vaccine: CDC (Center for Disease Control advises getting the vaccine by October) The influenza viruses chosen for the vaccines by ex perts this year are:
Trivalent vaccine (three viruses) includes two type A and one type B virus.
Quadrivalent vaccine (four viruses) includes two type A and two type B viruses.
High dose vaccine is usually given to older adults and persons with low immunity.
Drug companies have prepared 171-179 million dos es for this flu season.
High risk persons should be vaccinated unless aller gic to something in the vaccine.
High risk persons/groups are those 6 months-8 years old, older adults 65 and up, and persons with chronic illnesses.
Children younger than 6 months are too young to re ceive the vaccine.
Children 6 months to 8 years are given two doses of the vaccine.
Vaccine Immunity: Antibodies (against the virus) develop over two-four weeks and then decline over time.
Antibodies drop more quickly in older adults. Persons who have been vaccinated may still get the flu but symptoms are less severe.
Vaccine is more likely to protect younger adults and older children.
If you think you have the flu: Contact your doctor or health care professional imme diately.
Antiviral drugs are available and are more effective if started immediately.
Get plenty of rest, keep hydrated, and take the medi cation as directed.
Persons living with someone with the flu should avoid close contact, and should wash their hands often.
Most insurance policies cover some or all the cost of the flu vaccine. If you do not have insurance and can-not afford the vaccine call the local health department to get help with the cost. COMING SOON: WATCH FOR THE DATE. THE HEALTH MIN-
ISTRY AND JEFF SLOAN FROM CVS PHARMACY WILL OF-
