“I started at Wynne-Jones as part of the 2015/16 training academy intake as a trainee patent attorney, and am now starting my third year in the academy. I had no background in IP before starting at Wynne-Jones, but have received plenty of training and support to develop my knowledge and understanding of IP law.

One advantage about the Wynne-Jones training academy is that you can choose to sit the qualifying exams at a pace that suits you. For example, at the end of my first year I sat the UK foundation level exams to become a part-qualified UK patent attorney. I am now in the process of preparing for my first set of UK final level exams, and will start the process for qualifying as a European patent attorney in 2018.

There is a steep learning curve when starting out in the profession, but this is eased by having a well-structured training programme designed to give trainees exposure to all aspects of the patent process. For example, through the training academy I have spent time in our formalities department learning about the administrative processes of filing patents, which I may not have otherwise had exposure to. Also, regular marketing and business development workshops teaches me the business and relationship skills necessary to become a well-rounded, and reliable qualified attorney in the future.

If you are thinking about applying, I would recommend double checking that your cover letter and CV does not contain any spelling mistakes! Patent attorneys need to have a high attention to detail, and a CV or cover letter with lots of typos in is unlikely to make a good first impression”.

Who are Wynne-Jones looking for in the 2017-2018 training academy intake? We have the opportunity for two graduates to join us in the training academy from September 2018:

One trainee patent attorney to join us in our chemical team

One trainee patent attorney to join us in our life sciences team

You must be on track to receive a 2:1 or above in Chemistry, Chemical sciences, Material sciences, Biochemistry, Medical sciences, Biological sciences or related degrees.

Your final year must be 2018 with a view to completing your degree before September 2018.

What’s involved?

> You’ll be working with cutting edge innovators and brands to advise them on the protection and enforcement of the core intellectual property rights integral to their business

> You’ll also be drafting, filing and prosecuting UK, European & other foreign patent applications so high levels of accuracy, an excellent attention to detail and an ability to work to tight deadlines are key

> You’ll be constantly challenged and continuously learning

> And you’ll still be using your degree without being in a lab

> All whilst working towards your European Patent (EP) & Chartered Patent Attorney (CPA) qualifications to become a fully fledged Patent Attorney

“I joined the training academy in 2015 and I’m about to enter year three of my training. So far, I have taken and passed all five of the UK foundation level exams as well as one of the UK final level exams. Before qualifying, I have three more UK final level exams to take (and pass!). I also have all five European qualifying exams which I’ll look to take in 2018.

I have really enjoyed my training so far. It is a challenging profession and there is a huge amount to learn, however, it is also an extremely rewarding profession. I have felt supported throughout my training and everyone at Wynne-Jones is always happy to help. The training academy is unique in that all trainees receive marketing and business development training as well as the typical legal training provided in IP firms. The training I have had and will continue to receive will stand me in good stead to be a fully rounded attorney on qualification.

One piece of advice I can give to anyone applying is to make sure you do your research. Both in terms of researching the profession and to make sure it is going to be a good fit for you and to also research the firms you apply for. IP firms vary greatly in the training they provide and the working environment they offer, so is it important to choose the right one for you”.
