• Lyle will discuss the Lake Zurich School District experience in introducing LED technology into its learning environments through the example of a project to relight its Field House.
• This case study will give practical advise to other districts on how to evaluate potential LED lighting projects in your schools!

• Worked with Ruud Lighting in Racine prior to arriving at Lake Zurich CUSD 95 at a university in Illinois
• Developed an outdoor LED lighting program on an $18 million dollar project
• In my time at the university, saw only one light go bad which was promptly replaced by the manufacturer

• Looked at lighting options for energy efficiency projects when coming to CUSD 95
• Led was not a solution at that time for 2 x 4 lay-in ceiling lights
• Fortunately, when we wanted to update our Field House lighting, LED was recognized by Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) as a viable alternative to fluorescent lighting
• We have since included LED technology in two projects over the past 2 years.

• Since Thomas Edison created the incandescent lamp in 1878, no other development in lighting technology will match the changes that LED technology will cause in the future!

• Nick Holonyak Jr. (born November 3, 1928) is an American engineer and educator. He is noted particularly for his 1962 invention of a light-emitting diode (LED) that emitted visible red light instead of infrared light; Holonyak was then working at General Electric's research laboratory in Syracuse, New York.
• He was a University of Illinois graduate and professor!

• Since 1962, LED lighting technology did not become feasible and commercially available until recent years
• Fluorescent, Incandescent and High Intensity Discharge sources dominated the market place
• The last ten years have provided some dramatic improvements in LED lighting!

• Haitz's law is an observation and forecast about the steady improvement, over many years, of light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
• It states that every decade, the cost per lumen (unit of useful light emitted) falls by a factor of 10, and the amount of light generated per LED package increases by a factor of 20, for a given wavelength (color) of light. It is considered the LED counterpart to Moore's law, which states that the number of transistors in a given integrated circuit doubles every 18 to 24 months.[1] Both laws rely on the process optimization of the production of semiconductor devices.

• The technical issues related to LED lighting technology are fading into the rear mirror as the rush is on to outshine all other light sources
• Lumens per watt have increased to the point where all other sources are becoming obsolete
• The lumens per watt of 200 to 300 lumens per watt are attainable in the next few years!

• Color tuning is also becoming available where the LED light source will change colors from warm to white as the need arises
• Health care is a huge potential market for this feature and will become a good option for education as well!

• Dimming capable LED systems are more or less standard now and can make the LED technology more appealing to changing conditions in a space
• The dimming controls are now being built into the LED drivers so that another device is not needed
• Wireless dimming is available and will become more feasible as time goes by!

• The players in the marketplace are changing rapidly as large legacy companies are getting out of the market and newer players are taking their place
• There is a lot of junk out there so be wary of fantastic claims- if it sound too good to be true, it probably isn’t true!

• The disadvantage to all these developments is that you need to do your homework before taking the plunge
• Check with other schools that have done projects and see what their results are
• A warranty is only as good as the company behind it

• Looking at smaller projects that solve a major problem may be the best way to start
• LED technology can replace incandescent sources which are usually a good place to start in a school environment
