The Historical Society Awards Two ScholarshipsThe Cedar Grove Historical Society awarded two $750 scholarships this year. The scholarships honor students who reside in Cedar Grove and have been a volunteer in some project of the Society or have performed community service in Cedar Grove. Recipients were Cedar Grove High School students Christopher Handel and Michael Pronesti.
This past spring, Michael Pronesti arranged a trip with his peer leadership group at Cedar Grove High School to help prep the gardens at Morgan Farm. He also volunteered for other community projects.
For his Eagle Scout Project, Christopher Handel chose to build a shed for the organic gardens at Morgans Farm. The shed is located next to the gardens and now stores gardening equipment. Along with other community volunteer activities, Christopher assisted scouts from Troop 65 with their Eagle Scout projects that included benches for the park at Morgan’s Farm and garden beds for the organic gardens.
Congratulations Michael and Christopher! We wish you well as you head off to college!

The CIT Group Volunteers at Morgan’s Farm
Each June the CIT Group, a commercial and consumer finance company located in Livingston, hosts the CIT Cares Employee Volunteer Program. Employees of the corporation volunteer in many different communities on varying projects as a way of giving back to society. Morgan’s Farm has been a lucky recipient of their volunteerism. Like last year, 30 volunteers came to Morgan’s Farm and enthusiastically helped with mulching, weeding and tying up tomatoes. The volunteers were a tremendous help and the Society is truly grateful to them.
Eagle Scout Project at Morgan’s Farm
The Historical Society is happy to announce that Nick Marzullo of Cedar Grove’s Boy Scout Troop 65 has completed his Eagle Scout project, the renovation of the Society’s apiary. Nick and members of his troop built and installed six ten-foot platforms as well as painting and refurbishing our bee boxes. Additionally, to support and encourage pollination, the scouts built a Pollination Garden adjacent to the hives. The garden contains butterfly bushes, milkweed and other plants. The Society is grateful for the Scouts’ time, research and dedication in completing this project.
Cedar Grove Historical Society to Celebrate Its Fiftieth Anniversary The third article in a series honoring Cedar Grove Historical Society presidents over the last fifty years
Chris Werndly served as the third and fifth president of the Society. He also served as vice president, trustee and Newsletter editor. Chris grew up in Cedar Grove and his memories of the changes in the township through the years were invaluable in helping to preserve the history of Cedar Grove. Chris joined the Cedar Grove Police Department after serving in the United States Army during World War II. He served as Police Chief from 1985 until 1988. Chris was a member of the Rescue and Ambulance Squads. He served the Historical Society until his death in 2015. His dedication to the Society will always be remembered fondly by those who worked with him to preserve Cedar Grove’s history.
