Whilst it was the athletes who delivered awe-inspiring
sporting action during the London 2012 Games, there’s no doubt it was the London
2012 volunteers who delivered the sparkle.Join In promises to build on the expertise and enthusiasm of the volunteers and
inspire others to get out into their local community and volunteer, a goal that
matches the Big Lottery Fund’s ambition and it is a project we are proud to support.Through the Big Lottery Fund’s ‘Keeping the Spirit of 2012 Alive’ campaign, we
are determined to transform the feel-good spirit of the London 2012 Games into a
lasting legacy that will benefit communities across the UK and Join In is one of the
initiatives to benefit.
This event at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, combined with the new Join In website,
will create thousands of new volunteers and ensure that the public spirit that made
the London Games such a huge success can be a real force for change.
Peter AinsworthBig Lottery Fund Chair
INTRODUCTION
It’s wonderful to see so many people here in the Olympic Park, one year on
from the Games. Today we can celebrate what was achieved and relive some
precious memories. However, we’re not just here to look back.
Last year, the Games Makers, along with all the volunteers in London and
around the UK, made the Games the success they were. Most importantly,
they inspired people – showing what it means to be a volunteer, in both
attitude and impact.
We need to harness that inspiration, to make sure the volunteering legacy is
a real one. It starts with you.
Whether or not you volunteered last summer, I’d like to
encourage you to take the energy from 2012 and go local. Lend
a hand in a sports club or community group. I know from
experience the crucial difference you’ll make.
There are thousands of opportunities available, starting with
the Join In Summer of events, 27 July – 9 September. You’ll
hear more about it today, with lots of information in this
programme too.
It took us 10 years to deliver the Games; it will take 10
years to deliver the full London 2012 legacy. Without you,
it won’t happen at all. So have a great time today and
thank you in advance for helping keep the 2012 spirit
alive for many years to come.
Best wishes,
Sebastian Coe CH, KBE
The Prime Minister’s Olympic and
Paralympic Legacy Ambassador
welcome
Last summer the Games showed us what is possible when
people come together and we were incredibly proud of the commitment and
dedication of the 2012 volunteers.
We have always said that we wanted to see a long-lasting volunteering legacy
inspired by 2012 and that is why we are supporting Join In.
This summer will see lots of exciting events taking place, which we hope will
inspire lots of new volunteers and show how much we appreciate and need
volunteers in the UK.
The Go Local event is the first step on this journey to celebrate volunteering and
encourage more people to get involved in their community this summer and beyond.
I would encourage you to use your talents to make a difference in your community
and inspire others to do the same.

Tom Fletcher, Danny Jones, Dougie Poynter and Harry Judd form chart-topping British guitar-pop band McFly. Since 2004, they have had seven UK number 1 singles and five Top 10 albums, selling over 10 million copies worldwide. With ‘Room on the 3rd Floor’ they became the youngest band ever to have an album debut at number 1, taking the title from The Beatles.
Last year, Tom wrote the London 2012 mascots’ official song, ‘On a Rainbow’, singing it with sister Carrie.
They have just released a retrospective collection, ‘Memory Lane’.
Tess co-presents ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ with Bruce Forsyth and is joint patron of Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity along with husband Vernon Kay.
A popular choice with all age groups, Tess woke up the nation on ITV1’s favourite Saturday morning show ‘SM:TV’. She hosted the ‘Dancestar Awards’ for MTV, as well as ‘Your World Cup Pitch’ for ITV1, and ‘LA Pool Party’ for the BBC. Tess has just been chosen as the newest Ambassador for L’Oreal.
The original electric string quartet, together Tania Davis, Eos Chater, Elspeth Hanson and Gay-Yee Westerhoff form BOND.
Since their original debut a decade ago, the global chart-topping group has sold well over four million records worldwide, making it the best-selling string quartet of all time. They have travelled the globe several times in sell-out tours.

Recently discovered busking on the streets of London, Robbie Boyd’s feel-good folk pop songs have earned him national recognition, with airtime on a number of radio stations and a live performance on ITV’s ‘This Morning’. His band made the top 20 of MTV’s Brand New Unsigned for 2013.
Robbie Boyd
Following their debut EP release and national tour earlier this year, the James Riley Band are thrilled to be at Go Local. A nine-piece bluegrass and soul explosion, they blend melodic songwriting with soulful intensity. Formed in 2011, they won the Mayor of London Gigs Competition in 2012.
Formed during London 2012, the Games Maker Choir has more than 500 members. They regularly perform, raising money for sporting good causes. David Cameron described their song ‘I Wish For You The World’ as, “a testament to their resolve to keep that can-do spirit of the Games Makers alive”.
West End Greatest Hits is a mix of all that is exciting, popular and inspirational in musical theatre from London’s West End.
The cast includes winner of BBC One’s ‘I’ll Do Anything’ Jodie Prenger, alongside a top ensemble and choir. They will make you want to get up, dance and sing along.
The Games Maker Choir
Since his stand-up debut in 1993 on the West End stage, Eddie has had sell-out and critically-acclaimed international tours, including gigs at Madison Square Garden Arena in New York and a recent three-month residency at the Theatre De Dix Heures in Paris. He is also now equally respected as a film, theatre and TV actor.
Wowing the world in their role as volunteer performers at the London 2012 Ceremonies, the Pandemonium Drummers have gone on to enjoy great success. Though many had never drummed before, they now perform at events large and small in support of good causes, creating another long-lasting legacy of the London 2012 Games.
Ivor Novello award-winning, Brit Award-nominated band The Feeling first burst onto the music scene in 2006, with their million-selling debut album ‘12 Stops And Home’. It was followed by number one album ‘Join with Us’ (2008) and ‘Together We Were Made’ (2011).
Frontman Dan Gillespie Sells’ home is down the road from the Olympic Park and also serves as the band’s studio. There, he and fellow band members Richard Jones, Kevin Jeremiah, Ciaran Jeremiah and Paul Stewart have just put the finishing touches to their fourth album, due to be released this year.
Pandemonium Drummers
In August 2009, Eddie took a month off work and ran 43 marathons in 51 days for Sport Relief, raising in excess of £1.85 million.
In 2010, he became involved in the search for 70,000 volunteers for the London 2012 Games and followed their journey in the build up to and throughout the Games. To keep the spirit of the London 2012 volunteers alive, he is Patron of the Join In Trust. He is taking time out from his new world tour, Force Majeure, to be here at Go Local.

Since the end of the Games, thousands of workers have been working hard on the massive task of transforming Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Here’s what you can look forward to in the coming months and years...
So, WHAT’S HAPPEninG in THE PARK?
Looking forward to another unforgetable summer
Join In was set up to harness the spirit of the volunteers we came to know and admire last summer
during the Olympic and Paralympic Games. It’s the home of the Games Makers. But we are more than that: our aim is to encourage everyone to get involved − whether or not they volunteered last summer. One year on, it’s time to ‘go local’.
The Join In Summer runs from 27 July to 9 September. With the help of our funder the Big Lottery Fund and our
Official Partners BT and Lloyds TSB, there will be 10,000 events in sports clubs and community groups across
the UK. Without people to lend a hand, the events won’t happen. So find one near you and offer to
help. It’s your chance to make a real difference to your local community – and what could be more
rewarding than that?
Thanks for coming to the UK’s biggest ever celebration of volunteering. Enjoy!

Join us. Join In.Last summer, as we cheered our sporting champions
doing us proud at London 2012, I also marvelled at the heroic volunteers making it all happen.
This year, we don’t have the Games. But we do have the Join In Summer, with sports clubs and community groups right around the UK holding special
events. That means there are thousands of opportunities for local volunteers to shine, lending a hand to make sure the events run brilliantly.
We’re match-making enthusiastic people like you to the organisations that need you. Whatever your skills, however much time you can give, you can help.
If you’re feeling heroic, join us – join in. Have a read of this programme, listen to everything you’re told today, then get online at joininuk.org
and work out where you’ll go.
I thank you. So do all the people whose lives you are about to better.

A nation of active people joining
in with their local community.
That was the vision – and the
London 2012 Games were the
perfect opportunity to make it a
reality. So last year we set up Join
In to promote volunteering in
a new and exciting way. On the
weekend between the Olympics
and Paralympics, we asked people
across the UK to come together and
celebrate where it began for all of
our sporting champions – their local
sports clubs. More than 300,000
people took part in 6,013 events – as
volunteers, hosts and participants.
This year, we’ve got a whole
summer of events lined up, with
more registering every day.
There’s a huge range of Join In events to take part in: from walking in Waltham Abbey to gymnastics in Gillingham; from carnival in Castleford to wheelchair tennis in Wales. None of them would be possible without our partners:• British Cycling• Change 4 Life• Community Games• English Netball• Fields in Trust• Go Spike Volleyball• Hockey Nation• Parasport UK• Spogo• Team London• UK Athletics
Join In is funded by the Big Lottery Fund, government grant and by Official Partners BT and Lloyds TSB.

I’m a stay-at-home Dad with two children – Rhys, 5, and Charlotte, 2. I have always carried out voluntary work: from a kid I was a member of St John Ambulance for 15 years, doing various public duties and life guarding.
For the last five years I have run Albany Road Baptist Church Luncheon Club with help from other volunteers. It’s aimed at the over 50s, held once a week for anyone in the community to meet and make friends over a two course meal with tea or coffee for £2.50.
I’m also the catering officer for our church, involved in many events – from BBQs to kids’ clubs. This year I arranged a charity duck race and Fun Day – we invited the whole community to join us.
I try to do my best to give back investing time in the community and to serve
others gives me a real sense of joy. There’s nothing more pleasurable than to make someone else smile, especially when it only cost you time and effort.

More often than not, volunteers are needed just to muck in. No experience, no special skills, just enthusiasm and a willingness to do whatever’s needed: making the tea, sprucing up a wall with a lick of paint, pointing people in right direction on a fun run. Take Peter, for example…

I do the accounts and payroll for two charities
for free, and at a quarter of the usual rate for
another 10 charities. I would love to be able to
do them all free, but some are very complex. I
find working with numbers relatively easy, so
it’s good for me to help people who have more
difficulty with it – especially with the pressure
there is now on charities to have their accounts
in order.
Growing up, my parents were always
volunteering with the Asthma Society,
swimming club and Parkinson’s Society. I swam
competitively from the ages of 11 to 18; it was
all very dependent on volunteers, for transport,
organisation and so on. One of the reasons I
volunteer is to give something back.
I also regularly help out in other ways at a
number of organisations. Aside from the
accounting, I don’t always have the specialist
skills they need, so I do more general roles. Some
are weekly – for example, my role as Volunteer
Co-ordinator at Access Sport, a charity helping
young people with disadvantages or disabilities.
At smaller organisations they are very appreciative
about the help they get. Other roles are once a year,
like in the transport team at Crisis at Christmas and
marshalling at the London Marathon.
In September I start a six-week induction course
to volunteer at a youth centre: many of those who
go are homeless and have no work. I’ll help once a
week with their literacy and enterprise projects.
I find volunteering relaxing, energising
and enjoyable. It’s nice to be in a different
environment, to do something completely different from my
work – even if it is
still accounting!

I have been a keen volunteer since I was
about 11, involved with my local youth club
and other organisations. I have a passion for
working with those less fortunate than I am,
so I’m a fully registered Special
Olympics Volunteer too.
When I applied to be a Games
Maker at the age of 17 it was a big
challenge for me – but one I was
excited to take. It was an amazing,
unforgettable experience and it has
changed my whole outlook on life.
Since then, I’ve applied for a job at Manchester
United, where I’ve dreamed about working
ever since I was a child. I was also offered a
job for my university placement year at Walt
Disney World, Florida.
London 2012 has also inspired me to continue
volunteering, including a new post: Event
Services Manager with Special Olympics
Ulster. It’s extremely rewarding. None of this
would have been possible if I hadn’t
been a Games Maker.
As a volunteer, you’ll be helping other people. You’ll be making a difference to your own life too – and could use the opportunity to learn a new skill, from refereeing to working with people with disabilities to being a Station Master.
“I give my time to volunteer as a linesman and referee because I believe in helping people. When I see the happy smiling faces of the young people at the end of a match, it makes the experience priceless.”

“I want to to give something back to a community that has given so much to me. Volunteering puts a smile on your face. Plus, it’s good to do something for nothing, and opens up fabulous opportunities!”
Di Gough
“Volunteering isn’t just about giving, it’s about receiving. You can be cold and tired, but the smiling faces and ‘thank yous’ leave you feeling happy knowing you have
helped make that event.”
Carole Hayward
“If I volunteer I hopefully make the environment around me a better place, which moves
others to do the same – creating a virtuous circle within that
community.”
Simon LawrenceIt takes on average
40,000 volunteers to make a champion: we did the maths
Ask an athlete and they’ll remember the volunteers who made their achievement possible. We asked Olympians and Paralympians how many people had been involved in their success since they first started out at their local club and crunched the numbers. We found that on average it takes 40,000 volunteers to make a champion. So if you lend a hand at your local club – whatever role
“It’s a fantastic opportunity to meet
other people who have the same interests and
passions as you.”
Hemal Mistry
64% of sports clubs do not have
suitably trained staff to allow disabled people to
participate.*
Let’s change that!
“Volunteering is usually about a greater cause than yourself but through doing it you learn to be yourself; put yourself out there
and most of all smile.”
Matt Briggs
The big question: why volunteer?
So, there are lots of different ways you could lend a hand in your local area.
But why bother?
“If I’m going to put my time, expertise and enthusiasm into anything, isn’t it better to do something many people can get a tangible benefit out of? It
keeps you active – mentally, physically or emotionally, or all of the above. And
heck, every day’s an adventure.”
Richard Clayton
“Once you do it, you will get a wonderful sense of achievement
and belonging.”
Barbara Marie
you’re doing – you could be helping the next Sebastian Coe or Sarah Storey. And every medal they win, whether it’s at a local competition or the Olympic Games, will be your medal too.
World Champion and Olympian Colin Jackson:“When I retired in Birmingham at the Indoor Arena, all the volunteers on that day signed a massive card saying how wonderful it was to have helped me in my career. To this day I still have that card and every time I read it, it touches me.”
