Although each of Olive and Ernst’s children became a member of St. Paul’s, the parents

waited until May 28, 1905, following the birth of their fourth child Mary, to have John,

age three, and eleven-year-old Beth christened with their infant sister. Curiously, the

children’s group baptism took place at the Steinbeck home rather than in the church, a

statistical anomaly within parish records and Episcopal practice of the period. In the

parish baptismal register, “Mary L. Martin” and “J.R. Hamilton” are listed as

sponsors—the Episcopal version of godparents—for Mary, while “Eliz. Bailey” and

“Thomas” Hamilton are listed as John’s sponsors, and “Eliz. Farrell” and “Will

Hamilton” appear as sponsors for Beth.

1. Education in California: Leaders, Organizations & Accomplishments of the First 100

Years) The Pacific School and Home Journal, published monthly from 1877 to 1883,

contained many interesting discussions of educational topics and scholarly articles of

value to teachers. The California Teacher and Journal of Home Education, published

monthly from 1883 to 1887 printed and owned by the Lynch Publishing Company of San

Francisco was the official organ. Another change occurred in February 1887 when the

Pacific Educational Journal was given the contract by the state. This publication, which

contained much educational material of great value, was the official organ until June of

1896 when the Overland Monthly was chosen by the State Board of Education in its

program the schools of all official actions. The Overland Monthly, instead of making the

educational material part of its regular format, printed a separate sixteen-page

supplement each month.
