The Trick That Fooled Einstein!In Al Koran’s own words, “Whilst playing at the Savoy, I finished my act and the manager said someone asked me to join them at their table. It was Albert Einstein, the mathematical genius. He leaned over to me, very personally, and asked? ‘Where in the world did you get those extra coins…did they come from your sleeve?’” Al Koran replied, “No, it’s simple, a child can do it.” Al Koran then proceeded to repeat the trick for Einstein at his table and fooled him again! He then told the great man, “It’s not the numbers – but the words that fooled you.”

THE EFFECTYou and the spectator each take a handful of coins. After a moment, you predict how many coins the spectator is holding by making three statements – all of which are proven correct.

THE PROPERTIESAny large clear bowl filled with plenty of whatever object you are going to use for your presentation.

THE SET-UPFill the bowl with the coins, betting chips, golf tees, or whatever other small object you plan to use. It doesn’t matter what the object is, as long as it’s small and uniform in size and appearance. If you do use coins, I recommend a denomination that’s easy to add up in your head, such as a dime in the U.S., 10 pence in the UK, etc. We’ll assume you are using dimes in the following example.

THE BEGINNINGAsk the spectator to grab a handful, then you follow suit and grab a handful yourself. The only requirement is that you get more coins than the spectator. Then you say, “I will make three statements…”

1) “I will take the same number of coins.”2) “I will have six more than you.”3) “And I will have enough to make yours 15.” (This is where using a dime comes in, since you can also say, “And I will have enough to make yours $1.50.”)

If the spectator takes more than you, which doesn’t happen very often – ask him or her to transfer some of the coins to the other hand and then eliminate one hand (using a Magician’s Choice, if necessary). Recap what you predict-ed. “Remember, I said I will take the same number of coins as you, six more, and I will have enough to make yours $1.50.”

THE SECRETWhen you count your coins, mentally subtract the 2nd statement (in this case six – it can be less) from your total. The amount left after you subtract is the number of coins used in your third statement. This means in the above ex-ample, you would have had 21 coins to start. If you repeat the trick, vary the number used for the second statement.

THE CLIMAXNow, have the spectator count out his or her coins. Let’s say the person had 14. You say, “Same as you.” Count out 14 coins to match the spectator’s, “that’s $1.40. Right? And then I said, six more.” Count six more coins down. “And enough to makes yours $1.50” (or 15 depending on your presentation). “You had $1.40, so ten cents makes $1.50!” Or, “You had 14, so one more makes 15.”

SHOWMANSHIPWhen he (or better she) has the coins in hand, touch the spectator’s fist with the fingertip of your free hand – as if weighing the hand.

FINAL THOUGHTSThe trick is based upon “Old Wine,” from Greater Magic, which used playing cards. If you do it with cards, you won’t need the bowl, of course. Finally, always openly count the objects in a very clean and fair manner. Try it for yourself. You won’t believe how strong the reaction is to this simple trick.
