John Paul II – the Pope

His real name was Karol Wojtyla and he was born in Wadowice

on May 18th, 1920.

His brother

• He had a brother called Edmund who was a doctor in Cracow.

He became a priest in Cracow on 1st November 1946 and twenty-one years later, in 1967, he became a cardinal.

In 1978, Wojtyla was elected Pope and took the name John Paul II.

• On May 13, 1981, in Rome, Turkish terrorist Mehmet Ali Agca tried to kill the Pope, but he failed.

John Paul II died on April 2, 2005 in the Vatican City.
