1 JOHN C. RIFE, Ph.D., MSW, MPA Curriculum Vitae BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT Dr. John Rife is Professor of Social Work in the Department of Social Work. He was appointed as a faculty member at UNCG in 1991. During the past 28 years, he has served in many department, school, and university roles including undergraduate program director, graduate program director, co-director of the Joint Master of Social Work program with NCA&TSU, department chair for eight years, and associate dean for five years. Most recently he has served as director of BSW field instruction. At UNCG, he has been honored for his accomplishments with the UNCG Gladys Strawn Bullard Award for Outstanding Leadership and Service and he has won the school outstanding teaching award (twice), the school outstanding advising award, and the school special contributions award. He has been nominated for the UNCG HHS outstanding teaching award in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2019. Nationally, he was named a Council on Social Work Education Senior Scholar in 2006. Statewide, he has served as an elected member of the National Association of Social Workers-NC Board of Directors. In 2005, he was named the NASW-NC Piedmont District Social Worker of the Year. He has also served as chair of the UNCG School of Health and Human Sciences faculty assembly. Dr. Rife has written over 55 refereed articles and chapters which have been published in the highest ranked and most prestigious social work journals including Social Work, Social Casework, Families in Society, Social Work Research, Research on Social Work Practice, Health and Social Work, and the Encyclopedia of Social Work. According to Google Scholar, his work has been cited by national and international scholars continuously every year since 1989 (31 consecutive years). He has also written over fifty technical reports. He has presented his research nationally and internationally at over fifty professional meetings. While at UNCG, Dr. Rife has served as a principal investigator or co-investigator on over six million dollars in external funding. At the university level, he has chaired important committees such as the faculty senate enrollment management committee, budget committee, and the faculty grievance committee. BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Dr. John Rife is Professor of Social Work in the Department of Social Work. He was appointed as a faculty member at UNCG in 1991. During the past 28 years, he has served in many department, school, and university roles including undergraduate program director, graduate program director, co-director of the Joint Master of Social Work program with NCA&TSU, department chair for eight years, and associate dean for five years. 1. 2007-2018 Co-Investigator, Congregational Social Work Education Initiative. This project

trains BSW and MSW students in gerontological practice through preservice training and

field internships in central North Carolina congregational faith-based settings ($380,000).

With Prof. K. Jay Poole (PI), and Prof. Ann Pearson (Director).

2. 1997-2006. Co-Investigator--AmeriCorps ACCESS. This Corporation for National Service

funded project provided community development, employment and social service

assistance to immigrant and refugee communities (Latino, African, Hmong, Cambodian,

Lao, Montagnard, and Vietnamese) in North Carolina. (8 year funding amount:

$4,800,000) With Raleigh Bailey, Ph.D.

3. 1998-2000. Principal Investigator—NC Child Welfare Collaborative, UNCG Contract.

This project provided training to MSW students in child protective services, adoptions

and foster care ($767,000); Project continues presently under supervision of Susan

Dennison, MSW and trains 18-20 students annually in child welfare practice.

4. 1998-1999. Co-Investigator--Family Violence Prevention in Immigrant Families. Funded

by the NC Department of Human Resources, this project examined the causes of stress

and violence such as post-traumatic stress disorder and underemployment in refugee

families and provided training and technical assistance to prevent domestic violence

among refugee families in North Carolina. ($24,935) With Jacalyn Claes, Ph.D. and

Raleigh Bailey, Ph.D.

5. 1994-1995. Principal Investigator--YouthBuild Planning and Evaluation Project. This City

of Greensboro, NC funded project involved the development of a case management

model and evaluation plan for serving unemployed homeless youth. Results from this

planning contract became part of a federal funding application to HUD. ($13,728); With

T.B. Scullion, Ph.D.

6. 1994. Principal Investigator--Social Work Educational Traineeships in Child Welfare. This

North Carolina State Educational Assistance Authority funded project provided paid

traineeship opportunities for BSW students. Research focused on student learning

outcomes as part of the traineeship process. ($16,000); With Carolyn Moore, MSW and

Elisabeth Hurd, Ph.D.

7. 1993-1995. Principal Investigator--Opportunities for Families. This Z. Smith

Reynolds/Forsyth County North Carolina funded project examined the impact of systems

change strategies and direct service case management interventions upon unemployed,

homeless, and welfare-dependent families with the goal of increasing family self-

sufficiency. ($65,000); With T.B. Scullion, Ph.D.

8. 1993. Principal Investigator--Program Evaluation of Experiment in Self-Reliance, Inc. This

project facilitated the internal evaluation of a community action agency's programs by

board members of the agency. ($1,100); With T.B. Scullion, Ph.D.

9. 1992-1993. Principal Investigator--Program Evaluation of Family Investment Initiative.

This Kate B. Reynolds Foundation funded project evaluated an intensive case

management service delivery program designed to increase the economic self-sufficiency

of low income families. ($20,000); With T.B. Scullion, Ph.D.

10. 1990. Co-Investigator--Rural Homelessness in Ohio. This National Institute of Mental

Health (NIMH) R01 funded project examined the needs of homeless persons in 21 rural

counties over a six month period during 1990-91 ($354,000); With B. Toomey, Ph.D. and

R. First, Ph.D.

11. 1988-1990. Co-Investigator--Homelessness and the Chronically-Mentally Ill in Lake

County, Indiana. This three year NIMH-funded research project evaluated mobile case

management service delivery to the homeless mentally ill in an urban northwest Indiana

service delivery area. ($45,000); With R. First, Ph.D.

12. 1989. Principal Investigator-Case Management in Indiana Area Agencies on Aging. This

statewide study funded by the Indiana AAAA sampled the perceptions of case managers

in Area Agencies on Aging regarding the goals and functions of case management in

work with older persons. The study achieved an 82% response rate of all case managers

in Indiana who work in Area Agencies on Aging. ($1,350)

13. 1988. Co-Investigator-Evaluation of Richmond Community Schools Zero Base Drop-Out

Program. This funded study, using a quasi-experimental design, examined differences

between at-risk 6th grade students and traditional 6th grade students on the variables of

learning achievement, self-concept, personal control orientation, and parental child-

rearing behaviors. ($2,200); With Carol Browne, Ph.D.

14. 1988. Co-Investigator. Employee Child Care: Results From An Exploratory Investigation.

This study, using an exploratory-descriptive survey methodology, examined the perceived

need for a city-sponsored employee child care program by interviewing 179 employees of

the City of Richmond, Indiana. ($8,000)

15. 1987. Principal Investigator. Job Search Discouragement and Unemployed Older Workers.

This study, using a static group comparison design, examined differences based on gender

and job search status in a sample of 150 men and women, over age 50, who were

unemployed and wanted to work full-time. The study was funded by The Ohio State

University Research Foundation. ($10,000)
