Americus Vespuccius, the Florentine, followed Columbus to America

landing

on the South American coast in 1497. He is shown here debarked, holding a banner

with the Southern Cross

which

he was the first to see and an astronomical ring. Before him, upon a native hammock, is awakened America. On the landscape

are

the

earliest representations of American fauna including an anteater in the

right

foreground, a tapir,

and

a sloth on

the

tree. In the background natives are

practising cannibalism.
