ok on Know-how-talkoot activity.
Writing the scenario with yellow notes, laptop computer and video projector.
How do we make people understand the idea and usefulness of the phone-circle?
Let's make a video together, it makes the best influence.
We'll ask for help from Know-how-
talkoot.
Do you think anyone has experience on filming or editing?
Phone-circle instructors having an opening meeting.
Filming starts.Sirpa takes the camera andTuula plays the lonely role.
Hey, I'm notan actor!
Err... I haveneverfilmedbefore.
Do we have toedit it as well?
I cando thefilming.
We'll start withthe flip-boardand then usethe projector.
Who will makethe scenario?
We'll make Tuulasit alone and cry. Put some
feeling in it!
Where do weget laughter?
Phone-circle – How should I say it? Olli and Johanna on the way to a talkoot event.
They told me no, but I'm sure they
can and havethe guts.
This is starting to work out
smoothly now!
Nice pics!I never thoughtI'd be acting...
Watching thefinished video
together.
Watching the filmed material together. Editing starts. Everybody laughs.
Eating and planning.
Ha! Let's change that scene!
Let's dub it over!
We did it!We did it!
We did it!
Next time we will haveto let everybody try
filming! We'll distributeturns in the beginning.
What a fine talkootevent it was again, wonderful people!
I'm really lookingforward to the
next one.
Why don'twe sing a song
together atthe ending?
The talkoot event starts withan introduction: thinking trapsas obstacles to unprejudiced
futures thinking.
Interesting – what thedoctors think about
the future.I wonder what willhappen next year.
Will the employmentsituation be even worse?
Let's be systematicwith this.
A group of doctors looking for jobs are gatheredat a seminar; what will the future bring for them?
and continue with a longer term examination, followed by the futures of the world: possible emerging phenome-
na in different fields and areas.
Let's start our orientation towards the nearfuture concretely: What shall we eat today...
Local food isa desiredfuture in
food industry!
I think nuclear energyis undesirable.
The matrix isnearly done! It
is also availableonline.
Future-talkoot
Cooking, eating, with a discussion on what it would be like to live in that utopia. What about dystopia then?
A good sleep after a nice day, dreaming about the future. At breakfast, people form groups, write a scenario with yellow notes and make three audio plays on everyday life; desired,
non-desired and probable futures from the points of view of different characters.
We did a pretty good job! So nice to haveinvented those characters! They werehelpful in externalising everyday life.
I'm a cheeky,absolutist
trafficwarden.
I'm a dyslexic,sociable cash
keeper.
Talkoot crew, please, the table is set!The delicacies
are getting cold!
The final session:eating pizza, listening
to the plays, discussing. Olli and Johanna look back at the just finished talkoot event.
Making the audio playhelped in understanding
future scenarios.
...like being in someoneelse's boots.
Olli and Johanna arrive on time at the talkoot site.
Sitting down, having coffee and producing ideas for the contents using yellow notes.
How nice it would be to getour works published together!
I'll get the projectors ready.
Yep, I'll set the table for morning coffee.
Indeed. Howdo we make
that happen?
How about atalkoot event with
delicious food?
Everyone is working, admiring the pictures, writing. A few people start cooking.
Transfer images from thestick and add captions.
Publication for agroup of painters
We are ready to show our publicationto the teacher and other painters!
People head home with their finished papers.Veera dawdles for a while and says:
”I'll get myself a computer, this is too much fun”.
That was a good start!Next time, let's take morepictures and text along.
Wow, we are well advanced.Next time, a finishing touch
and we're ready to print.
Hey, my painting, so nice!
Hi, I'm Veera. I can't use information technology,
but I could cook forinstance, in order
to be useful!
Over a delicious meal, discussion on what hasbeen accomplished, what
to do next.
A new talkootparticipant arrives.
The new talkoot participant gets excitedand calls her husband for more pictures. Some of the pictures are displayed on the wall.
Finally, Olli and Johanna clean up and hit the road.
For sure... Next time we'llstart earlier with page
layout and useseveral computers.
I wish we hadmore projectors!
This surely isrewarding!
Hi, this is Anja, do you have a pen and paper? The event
will take place on...
...we need our ownweb pages!
Johanna and Olli arrive.
Have you madeplans for lunch?
Is this for currentaffairs or
administration?I've got pictures
on a memorystick.
I brought a fewaudio files thatmight be useful. The secretaries
arrange their yellownotes. Meanwhile,Johanna makessure the local
shop has got thefood requested
by the secretaries.
Sitting in smallgroups with a laptop
and a projector,making the pages.
Anja makes another phonecall to ask about Know-
how-talkoot.
This is all just time-consuming hobbying,we're here to make web pages!
The secretary associationgets a website
We did a goodjob, right?
Hey, we're pros!The pondering on
food was worth it!This is good...
Happily over lunch.
Finally, a proud look at the pages(https://sites.google.com/site/tampereenjaosto/).
Johanna and Olli review the event on their way home. Olli dictates notes on his phone.
What a nice and productivetalkoot session! Perhaps
we should startslowly then?
Next time we should givea better introduction on
the importance opendecision-making in
setting the mood andhelping people connect.
Let's book anothertalkoot event!
This was fun,I want to learn more.
We'll deepen the pages!
I thought this wouldbe more difficult.
Talking about food canbe confusing at first.
Know-how-talkoot
Social media talkootThe page is made on a free platform, Facebook or Bambuser, that can later be accessed with different computers and browsers. The participants of the talkoot event can later update the page according to their needs.
Internet-talkootA website is made on Google sites, a free platform that can be used on different computers and browsers; all talkoot participants can later update and maintain the site.
Publication-talkootA publication is planned, and page layout is made with free software,Scribus, which makes it possible to edit the publication on the community's own computers in the future.
Video-talkootThe video is planned, possibly filmed and finally edited during the event, using software that can be downloaded or is already installed on the computers; this makes it possible to edit the production later, or to make a new video using the community's computers.
Audio-talkootAn audio production is planned, recorded and finally edited with Audacity, a free sound editor. This makes it possible for the community to edit the produc-tion or to produce a new one with the community's own computers.
Future-talkootFuture talkoot inspires futures thinking among the participants. A futures matrix is produced with the assistance of pilots. Desired, non-desired and probable future scenarios are based on the matrix. These scenarios are then brought to everyday life by food preparation and communication productions. The productions are made with discipline, imagining an everyday drama.
What is the purpose of Know-how-talkoot events?A paper, web pages, a video, an audio production, social media, plans
for the future and food – according to the community's preferences –
or all of these together.
Who is Know-how-talkoot organised for?All communities, companies, schools or groups of friends.
How do we operate?According to the talkoot principle (unpaid voluntary action): equally, with
an open mind, supporting each other, with a fun and creative touch.
We call ourselves talkoo pilots. Instead of training and consulting, we
encourage independent action as we participate and give example.
Our aim is to improve communication skills and create practices of com-
munication for the communities. Know-how-talkoot has developed
communication practices of NGOs, companies, associations
and groups of friends.
Know-how-talkoot is based on the concept of Communication camps,
organised by Viestintäkasvatuksen seura (association for communication
education) since 1987 and the Tietotaitotalkoot ESF project of the
The Finnish Information Processing Association, FIPA.
