Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the Flat, Not a creature was stirring, not even my Cat.

Lucas parts in the garage were hung with great care, In hopes they’d all work when the need is again there.

Then all of a sudden, I heard such a racket, That I ran for the door, after grabbing my Jag jacket.

Outside what I saw, that was heading to me, Was airborne and red, definitely not an XKE.

It was THE Man in his suit, stocked with lots of good cheer, And I knew that a celebration would soon be here.

I was then reminded, of what my parents would say, That the celebration of Christmas should not be for one day.

It’s about taking pause, and reflecting back, At all the good we’ve had, since Santa’s last act.

It’s about saying thanks, because our lives are so rich, With good friends and fun toys that include a feline itch.

So as Santa would say, as he cruised out of sight, I hope your Christmas is merry, and may your Jaguar be bright.

Cheerio,

Jim

It was an early arrival for this correspondent because of a typo for the “anointed hour” that signaled cocktails (and the final lap of a very busy day for

this correspondent). Fortunately Glen Enright was on scene to take payments for all who showed up for this very fun event.

So who was there early? Bill & Kay Beatty were already there and Anna Foleen was explaining the “ins” and “outs” of her tablet computer to Bill while Kay was conversing with the aforementioned Glen, wife Jan Whittlesey, Mike Scott, and Sandi Lesh.

Time moved on (as it is wont to do) and (perhaps not surprisingly) more people arrived and (sadly for this correspondent) the waitress’ attention was ever more divided between her regular duties in the restaurant, bar orders (viva happy hour!), and the myriad needs of our

particular group. Moving to a spot for a few extra seats, there was time to circulate, talk, and order an “adult beverage” (which is “full of electrolytes” if you follow the Spenser detective stories by Robert B. Parker).

Close to dinner time, while gesturing to indicate a couple of open seats (and as the sole person wearing a suit to this event) yours truly somehow became an unintentional officiant in offering a supplication to Bacchus and the goddess of breweries. The gesture resulted in spilling the glass of Stella all over the right side of that self-same freshly dry cleaned suit. Fortunately it is a dark suit. (There’s a joke in there somewhere…ed.) That’s the advantage of dark suits versus light suits. You may “smell like a brewery,” but no one can see exactly where the evidence is… .

Some little time later a replacement libation was procured and a supplemental order of coffee was also on the table. (This may be the lowest part of

November event cont’d from pg. 5the spectrum of stimulants and depressants, but it would have to serve the purpose.) Dinner arrived at the same time as Chrysta and Nolan Milojevich, so with everyone seated, it was time to queue up for the delicious buffet that had materialized on the serving table.

About the time that dessert was being served (apparently chocolate is a highly desirable item for most JOCO members), Glen strode purposefully to the front of the room to introduce our distinguished guest Jeff Mach. Come to find out Jeff is, by his own confession, a British car aficionado. Apparently he is an owner/driver of MG’s and Austin Healeys, so he is well acquainted with the sometimes unrequited love British car owner’s experience.

His “day-time job” is working with the National Wildlife Service – and most of his “clients” are of the avian variety. He is responsible for banding, tracking, and keeping a census of several native bird species, including several types of owls. (Of course someone had to note that he worked at a different type of Hooters.) His travels take him all over the state of Oregon and his photography has taken him the length of the west coast of the U.S., and a few other destinations as well. Jeff is also a very accomplished

photographer, with an avocation for taking photos of racing cars (at large racing events as well as SCCA “club races.” His resume of photos published in various automotive publications (and a list of those publications is “long and distinguished” to quote a line in the Top Gun movie). Not surprisingly, Jeff’s photography spans both film and digital formats and we were privileged to see a spectrum of photos from “the early days” to very current racing events.

Jeff had interesting stories to go along with his chosen selection of photos, and the subjects of his photography ran from the diminutive “small bore” racers all the way up the scale to Can-Am, SCCA B-Production, and other fire-breathers. He also relayed some great advice for anyone going out to a race track with their camera: If at all possible, find a place to stand at a corner on the race track. Use a “slower” shutter speed, and “pan” (follow the moving vehicle/object) with the camera, snapping the shutter while moving the camera and then “following through” once the shutter is released. (Like your “follow-through swing” with a golf club, baseball bat, or trap and skeet shooting.)

To this correspondents eye Jeff presented a wide variety of fascinating images, and the dedication to his craft is quite evident. There are several publications out there that seem to “have gotten there first” recognizing the quality of his work. It would be interesting (for some of us that are similarly afflicted) to know the progression of equipment he has used in his photography over the years, and what he prefers to use now. It would probably be safe to say that he, like most “pro” or “semi-pro” “shooters” would fit the equipment to the occasion and he may still shoot the occasional roll of film “just for old time’s sake,” even though there is not as much variety in the films available on the market any longer. (And more’s the pity.)

As host Glen accepts Nolan and Chrysta Milojevich’s payment for dinner

The evening closed with a round of applause in thanks for Jeff taking his time to address the group and this correspondent hopes that at some point in the near future there may be a chance for him to return to regale us with more fascinating stories and pictures. £

tech article: ProgrammiNg remote Key systems

We often get questions from customers on how to recode their remote alarm transmitters after replacing batteries. Below are the

procedures for performing this recoding for 1990-1996 XJ6s. These procedures will only apply to Jaguar original equipment alarm systems, of course.

1990-92 XJ6 cars:1. Record radio security code (if so equipped).2. Disconnect negative battery terminal/cable.3. Reconnect negative battery terminal/cable;

“beeping” should be heard.

4. Press each transmitter so a total of 5 confirmations are heard.

5. Test operation. Enter radio code (if needed). Set clock.

1993-94 XJ6 cars:1. Turn ignition key ON.2. Turn security switch OFF (located in center

console).3. Turn ignition key OFF.4. Turn security switch ON.5. Cycle security system switch ON/OFF rapidly 4

times (within 5 seconds).6. Press each transmitter so a total of 5 confirmations

are heard.

1995-96 XJ6 cars:1. Open trunk lid.2. Open driver’s door.3. Turn ignition switch “ON” but do not start engine.4. Rock valet switch (located in center console)

5 times; a single chirp and flash of the headlamps indicate the Security Locking Control Module has entered the “learning” mode.

5. Press the alarm/lock (larger) button of the first transmitter. This transmitter will be linked to position 1 of the seat/steering/mirror memory. A tone will confirm that the transmitter code was accepted. Note that the button must be pushed within 15 seconds or the module will exit the “learning” mode.

6. Rock valet switch once. Two short chirps will indicate the system is ready to accept a second transmitter. Press the arm/lock (larger) button of the second transmitter. Two tones will confirm the transmitter code was accepted.

7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for up to a total of 5 transmitters. The second transmitter programmed will be linked to position 2; the third to position 3, and so

Page 9: JOCO’s AGM January 12th Moved To Stockpot Broiler

ö Pg. 9

December, 2014

Programming cont’d from pg. 8

forth. The number of confirmation chirps mentioned in step 6 will indicate the transmitter count (i.e. 3 chirps for third transmitter). Note that you must cycle through steps 5 and 6 five times regardless of the number of transmitters; if you have less than 5 transmitters just repeat using the last transmitter until 5 cycles have been finished.

8. Turn ignition off and close door and trunk. Test for proper operation of the seat/steering/mirror memories.

1996-06 XK8/r cars:1. Insert ignition key into the ignition switch barrel,

but do not turn it..2. Hold the turn signal switch stalk in the “flash to

pass” postion and turn the ignition on with the key

(while holding the turn signal switch in “flash to pass”). 3. Then repeatedly flash the lights with the turn

signal stalk until a confirmation chirp is heard (usually five or six flashes).

4. After hearing the chirp, depress the button on the remote transmitter being programmed. If the remote was accepted, there will be another confirmation chirp.

5. Turn off the ignition and test the remote.

If your Jaguar remote key is loosing its punch, and broadcasting range, you can change its battery yourself. You’ll need a very small Phillips screwdriver to remove the 2 screws holding the covers together. Radio Shack has a 6-pc set, part 64-1963 for about $6.

Check the part number on the battery. XJS remotes used an alkaline battery, 12-volt type 23A, sold by Radio Shack as part 23-154 for about $6/pr.

As you insert the new battery be sure the positive (+) pole is on the proper end. Also confirm that any tape used to insulate battery end contacts from the metalized trim bezel is in place. Reassemble the cover halves, inserting the rotating cylinder between them as you do, and do not over tighten the screws.

Make a record in your vehicle manual of the date and battery type for future reference.

C. Remove any debris from the radiator, particularly between the A/C condensor and the radiator. Leaves and other trash tend to get stuck in this little space and block the airflow through the radiator.

D. Check the thermostat’s operation and replace if necessary. If your engine fails to warm up to the “N”, your thermostat’s stuck open and needs to be replaced. If your engine consistently runs warm, the thermostat may be stuck partially closed. If so, it needs to be replaced.

E. It’s a good time to make sure your heater and defroster work.

F. Be sure to run your air conditioner for a couple of minutes each week during the winter, to keep the system functioning and well lubricated. £

Winter is not near it’s here and, it’s time to check and update your car’s cooling system. Here’s a few things to check:

A. With a coolant tester, test the antifreeze capacity of your current coolant. It should test to at least 20 degrees F below zero, or your coolant is suspect.

B. Check the condition of your hoses. Very hard hoses or very soft hoses should be replaced. Better now than when it’s snowing.

Diesel eNgiNes comiNg to jaguars

Despite now being owned by the Tata Group, Jaguars have continued to use engines developed while the company was owned by

Ford. With the advent of the new lngenium line of engines, this is about to change.

Jaguar Land Rover has stated that the new line of engines will deliver class-leading power, economy, flexibility, refinement and low emissions.

The engines are modular in design, and will share common bores, strokes, cylinder spacing and 500 cc per cylinder displacement. They will be suitable for longitudinal or transverse installation, and can be mated to either manual or automatic transmissions. The engines will accept a variety of forced-induction systems, and will be compatible with electric-hybrid applications.

Weight is kept down by the extensive use of aluminium, both the block and head being made of that metal. Other interesting features are computer-controlled oil and water pumps that work only as needed, simplified cam drives, low friction roller bearings, a “dual path” cooling system that reduces warmup time and electronically controlled piston cooling jets that spray oil only as required. Complicated stuff!

The first lngenium engines built will be 2.0 litre diesel units, followed by 2.0 litre petrol ones. These will power the new Jaguar XE compact saloon, which will be on sale in North America in 2016, and the Land Rover Discovery Sport.

The modular design will permit engines of larger displacement to be easily developed for use in other Jaguar and Land Rover models. £

tech iNfo: DiagNose eNgiNe Noise

Oil pressure light flickering? Engine knock? Both? Major repair problem or minor annoyance? Either way, you should always

quickly investigate the source before it becomes an even bigger problem.

Oil pressure - or more precisely the lack of it - in certain parts of your Jaguar’s engine can become a major repair nightmare. All engines lose a certain amount of oil pressure over time as normal wear increases bearing clearances. But unusually low oil pressure in an engine, regardless of mileage, is often an indication that something is seriously wrong and requires immediate repairs.

That “tappet” noise may be only one sticking lifter but it may also indicate an oil flow problem that will eventually cause damage to at least one valve.

A flickering oil light is more difficult to troubleshoot if your engine is not obviously in need of major repair work.

Modern engines with hydraulic lifters, tight tolerance bearings and miniature oil filters require conscientious monitoring of oil pressure.

The following diagnostic tips (excerpted from “Troubleshooting Low Oil Pressure”, Underhood Service, 10/97) will help you determine whether you have a major repair problem or just a minor annoyance.

Jaguar Oil Pressure Diagnostic TipsA good place to start your diagnosis of a low pressure

condition is at the dipstick. Check the oil to see that it’s at the proper level (not low nor overfilled). If low, the engine may be burning or leaking oil. Adding oil may temporarily remedy the low pressure condition, but unless the level is properly maintained, the problem may recur.

If the engine is leaking oil, try new gaskets or seals to fix the leak. If the engine is burning oil, the valve guides and seals are most likely worn, but the rings and cylinders might be bad, too. A wet compression test and/or leakdown test will tell you if it’s the valve guides or rings and cylinders that are worn.

The least expensive fix in the case of worn guides is to install new valve guide seals (if possible) without pulling the head.

The best fix is to pull the heads and have the guides lined, knurled, replaced or reamed for oversized valve stems. Worn rings and cylinders would call for a complete overhaul.

Also note the condition of the oil and make sure it’s the correct viscosity for your Jaguar and climate.

Heavier viscosities, such as 20W-50, straight 30W or 40W, may help maintain good pressure in hot weather but are too thick for cold weather driving and may cause start-up lubrication problems - especially in overhead cam engines.

Light viscosities, on the other hand, such as straight

10W or 5W-20, may improve cold weather starting and lubrication but may be too thin in hot weather driving to maintain good pressure.

That’s why most car and OE parts manufacturers recommend 5W-30 in modern engines for year-round driving.

If the level is okay, the next thing to check would probably be the pressure sending unit. Disconnect the unit and check the warning lamp or gauge reading.

If the warning light remains on with the sending unit disconnected, there’s probably a short to ground in the warning lamp circuit. Likewise, if there’s no change in a gauge reading, the problem is in the instrumentation, not the engine.

Bad sending units are quite common, so many mechanics replace the unit without checking anything else to see if that cures the problem. This approach might save time, but it’s risky because unless you measure pressure directly with a gauge attached to the engine, you have no way of knowing if pressure is within specifications or not.

Most warning lamps won’t come on until pressure is dangerously low (less than four or five pounds). So don’t

Page 15: JOCO’s AGM January 12th Moved To Stockpot Broiler

December, 2014

ö Pg. 15

Page 16: JOCO’s AGM January 12th Moved To Stockpot Broiler

The Cat Fancier Official Journal of the Jaguar Owner’s Club of Oregon

ö Pg. 16

assume the absence of a warning lamp means pressure is okay, especially if the engine is making any valve or bearing noise.

If a check of pressure reveals unusually low readings, check the filter. It’s possible the filter might be plugged with gunk. Replace the filter and see if that makes a difference.

The next step is to drop the oil pan and check the oil pump pickup screen. If the screen is clogged with debris, you’ve found the problem. Also, check to see that the pickup tube is properly mounted and positioned, is firmly attached to the pump (no leaks) and is not obstructed.

If the pump is mounted inside the crankcase, the next step might be to remove and inspect the pump. Open the pump cover and measure clearances. Also, check for scoring or other damage. A broken pump drive would tell you something entered and jammed the pump. If the pump is worn or damaged, replacement is your only option.

If the pump appears to be okay, the next step is to measure the rod and main bearing clearances. Check the clearances on the main bearing closest to the pump (this has the greatest effect on pressure) and clearances on the furthest rod bearing (this will show the greatest wear).

If the bearings are worn, they need to be replaced.

But before you do so, carefully inspect and measure the crankshaft journals to check for wear, scoring, out-of-round and taper. If the journals need attention, the crank will also have to be reground or replaced.

Other diagnostic checks might include camshaft end play and/or pulling a valve cover or the intake manifold to check the cam bearings and lifters.

Remember, excessive clearances or leaks anywhere in the engine’s oil supply system can contribute to low pressure.

Once you’ve identified and repaired discovered problems, your final check is to start the engine and make sure pressure is within Jaguar specifications. Use a mechanical pressure gauge and don’t rely on the dash gauge or the warning light to verify that the repairs you’ve made have eliminated your problem.

One Final WarningIf you insist on driving blind and deaf to the obvious

warnings coming from under your Jaguar’s hood, the next sound you hear may be a rapping or knock noise from the rod bearings - which will eventually be followed by dead silence as your engine seizes and your Jaguar coasts to a dead stop. £
