Mt. Lumot-Sumagaya in Misamis Oriental rewards the physically fit

However, I wasn’t. A caveat: do not implore me. It was my break-in climb after an 8-month hiatus, and hence, mine was a
body out of shape. Bad mountaineer, you might say. Yet, the force of being in the middle of ascending slopes with trees hovering, and being able to breathe fresh air to detoxify the body regularly enveloped by frigid office air-conditioning was strong. This had to be done—I had to climb; I had to get away.So when my group, the Loyola Mountaineers, presented a rough itinerary of a 3-day climb in Mindanao for Mt. Lumot-Sumagaya, I had to grab the chance. It didn’t matter that I had to book a flight at the last minute and inform the other climbers that I’d be joining at the last minute as well. “Freedom, finally!” I thought.Obviously, I paid little attention to the itinerary, being too absorbed with the idea of flying away to a different place. When my climb buddies and I were in Cagayan de Oro to buy supplies for the trek, details started to clear up. Mt. Lumot-Sumagaya was actually two mountains that we would traverse in the next three days. That’s Mt. Lumot and Mt. Sumagaya for you, smarty. All the while, I thought it was just a fancy, complicated name for a mountain. With a bit of moaning, and some self-blame (that’s what you get for being too spontaneous, hah), I told the other mountaineers, “Let’s go white-water rafting instead!” I hopped on the bus to Ginoog City, Misamis Oriental anyway.
When in doubt...From Ginoog City, it takes an estimated half-hour habal-habal (Mindanaoan term for
motorcycle) ride to the foot of Mt. Lumot, depending on the mercy of the unpaved roads and the expertise of the habal-habal driver. It was an overcast morning, and the grounds told of a drizzly night. Good thing, my habal companion, Paco, chose an alpha-male-looking driver; thus, we had a semi-smooth journey to the jump-off point.
Two of our friends, Pappy and Gyobs, weren’t as lucky, for their driver had legs that couldn’t touch the ground for balance, causing their motorcycle to tumble three times in the muddy areas. Gyobs had even burned his leg on the muffler. My white-water rafting alternative wasn’t such a bad suggestion after all, I mused.
Trek star, start trek!By the foot of Mt. Lumot stands upright a shrine for the fatal Flight 387 crash in 1998. It is hallowed ground; thus, my tiny complaints were temporarily muted. To quote Kian from his online post about the climb, “We tread these grounds with respect to their sad fate to proliferate our lives where they
unfortunately lost theirs.” After a quiet moment, a prayer, and an appreciation for life, our foray into the forest began.
The trail unfolded to be familiar, having characteristics similar to other mountains in Mindanao from my recollection. It was nature’s warm welcome: wild mushrooms abounded, and everywhere, moss carpeted the ground and wrapped the trees. If you’re lucky, a monkey might even surprise you along the way.
Though the terrain wasn’t alien to me, the fitness level that I used to have, unfortunately, was. Good thing we were preoccupying ourselves with ordinarily corny yet amusing word association games to divert our attention from the challenge that the mountain presented to us (or to me, at least.) The more dense the forest grew, the less visible the trail became. Fallen tree trunks in varying giant proportions slowly replaced soil for trekking ground.
Paco, who led the pack, eventually kept a 30-meter distance from me. Since he and the trail were hidden from sight most of the time, I had to

could have been prevented. In the area, all trees, except for one, were cut midway, and on the ground, shoe soles and a life vest were sporadically scattered. My mountaineer friends became armchair forensic scientists, discussing the altitudes in mountains and the vacuuming activity that may have caused the tragedy. It was humbling, not just to realize how smart my friends are, but more so, how small and frail we are in the face of nature’s force.
The final ascent to Mt. Sumagaya’s summit proved this further, as the trail became harsher and temperatures started dropping lower by the hour. I tried being less conscious of the difficulty, and started to marvel at the beauty of the mountain. By the ridge of Mt. Sumagaya, a bird revealed itself, gracefully gliding, showing the blue underside of its wings to the lowly spectators.
Then, with most of the journey behind us, I was reminded why I climb.
shout his name, or alternately, “QQ ,” to check if I was still going in the right direction. (A few years back, we have learned from our longtime Mindanao mountain guide, Cernan, that ‘Q’ is the highest pitched letter in the alphabet, making it for a whistle substitute.) After a lot of Q’s and a few expletives, we all reached our campsite before the sky was dark. The suggested itinerary was in order. Good job, I thought. I still have it in me.
CampWhile some might disagree, I believe the most enjoyable part of any mountain-climbing experience is the camping. There’s nothing quite like soiled and sweaty trekking clothes stripped off for cleaner ones, and the overfilled 42-liter backpack off the shoulders. Also, our group liked to eat gourmet food at the peak, so we have celebrated the night with pasta and wine. (The term “gourmet” is volatile, as we classify any unprocessed and un-canned food “gourmet”. Since one can’t be really choosy when high up there, we try to be creative with our culinary repertoire most of the time.)
In tents, secrets, gossip, and ghost stories alike are shared. I am weak-hearted when discussions about our “spirited” friends surface; even doubly horrified then, since Mt. Lumot was a crash site. Cernan found this fear an object of his amusement, subjecting me to his personal accounts of the aftermath. However horrifying were the tales of past (i.e., body parts furled and burnt beyond recognition) and present (i.e., intact flight steward’s uniform standing a few meters away from the campsite), they were eventually helpful in making me hike faster the next two days. Night trekking wasn’t part of my plans.
Overtures When we got to the actual crash site the following morning, Cernan explained how, had the plane steered a mere 30 meters upwards, the accident
It was humblIng, not just torealIze how smart my frIends are, but more so, how small and fraIl we are In the face of nature’s force.
I want to be a mountaineer: tips for the first-timer
1. Find mountaineering groups. While exploring the wild sounds adventurous, ultimately, it can be dangerous. There are various mountaineering clubs in schools and the workplace that can provide not just invaluable knowledge, but also lend equipment and provide companionship during climbs. Check out the Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines’ website for the list: www.mfpi.org.
2. Train, I’m told. It’s always smart to condition oneself physically and psychologically before climbing. For endurance, try jogging on uphill roads and/or long-distance running.
3. Look up, not down. It pays to pay attention to nature’s charm, not just to the rocky/mossy/muddy trail. You’ll be surprised at what you’ll find.
4. Leave no trace. Always remember that we are guests, so be gracious and clean up after yourself. When trekking, try to follow the trail so as to lessen the impact on the mountain.
5. Just go! Leave your apprehensions behind, and enjoy the ride. There’s nothing like seeing the sun rise and set in a sea of clouds.

CasinO’ PrOjeCt witH tHe 5 stOnes COlleCtive [anna mOrenO, kOsta tOnev & jOBelle taYawa] The concept of change and how it is perceived in a community were our main curiosity. In this site-specific work, we spread a rumor that an abandoned church in La Pigna, Italy was to be converted to a casino. Banners and posters were put up in the area, as well as a notice for a public referendum that would consider La Pigna citizens’ opinion. These were our instruments to provoke discussion amongst the citizens their idea of change.

TIME TO BE SILLY [ILLY CAN DESIGN COMPETITION] A collage made out of an old Italian art newspaper found in Cittadellarte’s premises. Just a friendly reminder that there is time to be, well, silly. First image is the visualization of the design with the Illy plastic wrap. Second image reveals the entire design.

“I am speaking my small piece of the truth, as best I can…[We] each have only a piece of the truth. So here it is. I’m putting it down for you to see if our fragments match anywhere, if our pieces, together, make another larger piece of the truth that can be part of the map we are making together to show us the way to get to the longed for world.”

SMALL PIECES OF YOUR TRUTH [GAME COVER DESIGN] IN EXHIBITION. Maggie Lawson, artist and arts educator from Oakland, USA commissioned me to create a cover design for her cultural, multi-player game, Small Pieces of Your Truth, based on a tantagram. The concept for the design took from the diagonal nature of the actual game pieces. Developed in Fondazione Pistoletto in Biella, Italy.

My name is Jobelle Tayawa and I am a 25-year old graphic designer and art director born in Marikina City, Philippines and based in Singapore. I obtained my Bacherlor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies, Communication and Psychology tracks from the Ateneo de Manila University in 2006.
A predilection toward collage art, independent zines and children’s illustration influenced me to pursue a career in publication design after graduation.
At the age 20, I had my first magazine art direction job for a teen fashion magazine. Since then, I have art directed or designed a number of publications—most recently, Cosmopolitan Magazine Singapore.
Currently, I am experimenting on interdisciplinary projects involving design and psychology. Some of my collaborations in video and participatory art have been in exhibition in Spain and Italy this year.
