Working to the Head, Exhibitions the position leads multidisciplinary exhibition project teams that may include external consultants and contractors such as designers and trade contractors; as well as cross-branch disciplines including but not limited to, historical, curatorial, registration, conservation, audiovisual, buildings, web and marketing. The position requires experience in the delivery of interpretative exhibition design projects within the museum or art gallery sector; a thorough understanding and appreciation of contemporary museum practices; experience in the development and management of a touring exhibitions program, the ability to contribute to several projects simultaneously at various phases; and high level communication and liaison skills.

Responsibilities

1. Provide project management and administrative support in the planning, implementation and maintenance of permanent, temporary and touring exhibitions, including:

Lead and manage all aspects of the development and preparation of exhibition documentation, including curatorial, collection, design and production/fabrication/construction documentation through all exhibition development phases;

manage the development and preparation of exhibitions for tour, including but not limited to, tour liaison; documentation; crating lists; venue confirmations; loan agreements; guest lists; marketing packs; and briefing material;

coordinate the planning and implementation of installation and demount of all exhibition types, including touring;

manage the procurement of goods and services as they relate to the exhibition program including the development and management of contracts;

manage and coordinate meetings and prepare and distribute minutes; manage the establishment and monitoring of exhibition lists; develop and implement exhibition policies and practices; manage multimedia and image orders using the Memorial’s digital media system (PICTION); coordinate host venue visitor statistics, reports and surveys; and other administrative tasks as required.

2. Establish and maintain productive working relationships with Memorial staff, staff at State, metropolitan and regional cultural institutions across Australia, exhibition designers and external contractors;

3. Contribute to the preparation of reports, grants, sponsorship proposals and acquittals; 4. Manual handling and movement of a wide range of collection material, exhibition infrastructure, including graphic material,

showcasing and exhibition furniture5. Reporting to the Head, Exhibitions, work under limited direction with autonomy and accountability for specific tasks and will

make decisions related to the direct work area.6. Provide leadership and supervision to a small team of exhibition staff including monitoring and prioritising the work of the team

against the agreed business plan while fostering team development and identifying opportunities for improved working practices to reflect the changing environment of museums and cultural collections.

7. Develop, manage and report against exhibition development and maintenance budgets.8. Work under a broad direction exercising a considerable degree of independence and make decisions that may have a high

level of impact on the direct work area and the broader operations of the Memorial.

Selection Criteria

1. Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage and lead a small team, supervise the work of others, work with multi-disciplinary consultants and contractors, and work collaboratively to determine the strategic direction of the program aligning longer term planning with agency goals and objectives.

2. Well-developed stakeholder engagement skills, including the demonstrated ability to engage with the contracted design/ production consultants and staff at other institutions/venues.

3. Well-developed written and verbal communication skills in order to effectively draft project documentation, and to manage relationships effectively with internal and external stakeholders.

4. Sound understanding of conservation principles and practices as applies to the manual handling and movement of collection material and exhibition infrastructure.

5. Well-developed computer skills across a range of applications including Microsoft Office, Sharepoint, project management tools and collection management systems (ideally MICA).

6. Demonstrated ability to interpret 2-D and 3-D exhibition design elements including plans, elevations and technical drawings for fabrication.

7. Sound understanding of the principles and practices of Work Health and Safety as outlined in the WHS Act, in relation to personal safety, and the safety of others.
