Job Description

Title: Community Support Worker (Glebe)

Hours: 22.5 hours per week - some evening and weekend work will be required

Location: Welcome Change CIC, Shard End, Birmingham

The role will require outreach work at other local locations

Salary: £ 18,000 pro rata plus benefits

Reports to: Project Manager

Job Purpose

· To support in the development of a centre for the local community in Glebe Village (based in the Glebe Farm Library) The project entitled “More than Just a Library” is a direct response to community consultation. The Support Worker will be key to engaging with the local community and organising activities delivered at the library building.

· The Support Worker will identify particularly vulnerable service users to assess their needs and support in navigating appropriate systems.

· To support the development of volunteers

· To enable the positive achievement of outcomes related to BFL funding

· To promote the work of Welcome Change CIC to hard to reach groups and vulnerable within the community

Main Duties and Responsibilities

This is an outline of the main duties and responsibilities of this post:

· To support in the development of a brand new community provision based at the Glebe Library in Glebe Farm, East Birmingham. “More than Just a library”

· To deliver, in cooperation with the project manager, creative and engaging consultation events activities according to community needs and requiremenrts

· To support any residents / community members in need of particular support in areas such as benefits / employability / housing

· To signpost residents / community members to appropriate partner organisations with specialist knowledge where necessary.

· To represent Welcome Change CIC and the Glebe project attend various forums and groups in local community to include local neighbourhood meetings and partnership forums.

· To gather appropriate information on the results of our work e.g. attendance at activity groups/ improvements on health and wellbeing / involvement in community events in line with BLF outcomes.

· To support volunteers and voluntary groups based at the Glebe project

· Monitor and record outcomes using the Warwickshire and Edinburgh tool -maintaining accurate and complete records of all activity as directed.

· Assist with the provision of the group programmes and promotional events

· Promote choice, wellbeing and the protection of all individuals

· Ensure work is undertaken in line with Health and Safety requirements and that risk assessments have been completed.

· Promote the equality, diversity, rights and responsibilities of individuals

· Ensure you are aware of organisational policies and procedures and other relevant guidance and that all aspects of the service are carried out in line with these

· Be responsible for maintaining your own professional knowledge and competence

· Make efficient use of supervision and positively engage with learning and development opportunities

Person Specification

Essential1. Experience of the voluntary and community sector

2. An understanding of the importance of community engagement in the development of local provision

3. An understanding of and benefits / social housing issues

4. Knowledge of the needs of local communities in particular those living in areas of high deprivation.

5. Experience of working with challenging behaviour

6. Competence of working with diversity, including awareness of race, culture and gender issues.

7. An understanding and knowledge of Safeguarding in relation to child protection and vulnerable adults.

8. A high level of verbal and written communication skills, including an ability to write accurate and concise reports.

9. Experience of IT in a working environment including Word, Excel and Access.

10. Ability to work independently

11. A good team player

12. Ability to be flexible

13. Full Driving licence and Car owner

Desirable1. Local knowledge and experience of working in East Birmingham
